23.01.2022 This is how good we can make them feel, and how good they make us feel.
23.01.2022 Just one of the wonderful stories from Matching Pets To People. Sarah & Kilo’s Story: Sarah knew that a dog would be a wonderful opportunity for her. Living with an acquired brain injury in an outer suburb of Bendigo, Sarah had been seeking a dog as a companion when she heard about Matching Pets to People. Sarah and her Mum approached the program to enquire about adoption of a dog and some help with care, behaviour, walking and budgeting. Soon after, Sarah was matched with a... four year old golden retriever, named Kilo. They bonded immediately! Sarah loves Kilo’s ability to learn and listen as well as his bubbly personality. The moment they met was very special. Sarah could see Kilo listening so intently to her. It was an amazing start to getting to know each other. Sarah recognises that having Kilo is a full time job, that it is more than just feeding him. It involves taking him for walks, remembering to clean up after him, playing with him and giving him attention. She said that this connection they have built has been very rewarding. Sarah has experienced significant fatigue and challenges sleeping, however, since owning Kilo this has reduced and her confidence has increased significantly. Sarah’s mum has also reported Sarah has experienced a reduction in the number of seizures since owning Kilo. While she still has good days and bad days this change gives her hope. Sarah says it certainly helps having Kilo to wake up to each morning. You cannot be unhappy around him. On reflection, Sarah reported that she has learnt a lot about herself during this time. Now that she has the responsibility of owning Kilo, she reports her memory has improved because she has created a new routine with purpose. Sarah’s mornings involve being woken by Kilo for a cuddle when he jumps up on her bed, having breakfast, feeding Kilo then putting him outside while she has a shower. Kilo & Sarah go for a walk most days and Kilo is working on his walking manners at the moment. Matching Pets to People are thrilled that Kilo has found such a loyal & patient companion in Sarah. We cannot wait to hear more about their story as time progresses. 13.01.2022 I was asked a good question today about Matching Pets To People. A lady with a young son on the Autism spectrum asked if we match dogs to young children, or adults only. We happily look to match children with a suitable pet, cats or dogs. We look to match pets for children with physical or psychological or medical conditions who will benefit from the love, companionship and responsibility of a pet. Thanks for the question. Have a great weekend folks. Cheers, Sharon & all of the committee at MPTP.
