25.01.2022 I was reminded today of the importance of priorities. How spending time with our children, away from electronic distractions, really matters. How it is not just our attention that matters, it is also our undivided attention. https://maternity-matters.com.au/brisbane-//30-just-say-no

16.01.2022 Sometimes, it is all too much. Just a few reflections from the journey https://maternity-matters.com.au/brisbane-preg/bough-breaks

13.01.2022 Sleep. It's such a large, important and yet difficult topic to do justice to. But I've made an attempt -- I hope you find it useful. https://maternity-matters.com.au/brisbane-pregn//02-sleep

12.01.2022 Well, a lot happens in 2 weeks, doesn't it? We are awaiting the impact of Covid-19 and it is critically important that we work together to keep ourselves, our families and our communities safe. I have a growing number of resources I hope you find useful https://www.gps-can.com.au/covid19-blog/a-guide-school

10.01.2022 Last week I posted my blog on sleep, this week I thought I'd mention sex. They are both important topics and there is so much difference in the approaches people take. As always, filter any advice given (including mine) for what works for you (or doesn't work) and see if this fits! https://maternity-matters.com.au//2/04/07/sex-in-pregnancy

09.01.2022 Which test is which... Wow! Who knew there were so many tests to consider when you are pregnant! And who knew that some of them don't give you a straight answer -- when all you want to know is yes or no, how come some tests just tell us if something, such as Down Syndrome, is more or less likely? There is an important difference between a test which screens for a condition (is it more likely or less likely that you have it) and one which diagnoses it (yes you do or no you... don't have it). It is good to know which test does which when choosing the tests you wish to have. To help you understand this, I have a short blog with some links which I hope you will find useful https://maternity-matters.com.au//screening-diagnostic-tes

08.01.2022 Are you too busy? Or is it just me? How do you begin to manage the tsunami of things-to-do which comes your way when you have children? Some thoughts which I hope will be useful. maternity-matters.com.au///10/13-priorities-slow-easy-kind

06.01.2022 Belly buttons, hips, feet, hernias, girl and boy bits.... Lots of the little stuff, hope it helps! https://maternity-matters.com.au//20/12/22/lumps-and-bumps

04.01.2022 Newborns and skin dots and spots -- what to make of them? I have two recent blogs, one on rashes and the other on birthmarks. Spread the word! https://maternity-matters.com.au//2019/11/25/rashes-in-new

04.01.2022 Eczema. Really important topic. Hope you find this useful. https://maternity-matters.com.au/brisbane-pregnanc//eczema

03.01.2022 Birthmarks. Often of interest, rarely of concern https://maternity-matters.com.au/brisbane-preg//birthmarks

03.01.2022 I have been creating some blogs in partnership with the wonderful Dr Kat McLean and with the support of GP colleagues. Since launching on March 6, it has had >430K views as we move a little faster and perhaps more consumer-friendly than the government sites (although they are starting to catch up) The way Google and Social Media works, if you share/recommend a site, people are more likely to click through and that puts us up on the Google search page (we are currently at #1...3 in a targeted search) Please have a look, if you agree with the content, share. I will consider any feedback, but please be positive before negative! https://www.gps-can.com.au/

03.01.2022 While our attention is focused on the impact of Coronavirus, it seemed timely to do a blog about infections in general. This is not everything you would ever need to know, but it's a start https://maternity-matters.com.au/brisbane-pregnancy-and/gtu

02.01.2022 I know, I know, everyone says the same thing. "Smoking is bad for you. Quit." I wish it were that simple. Smoking is a really expensive way to ruin your health AND really addictive. If I had a dollar for everyone who told me "I'll quit when I want to" and for everyone who said "I wish I'd quit when I could", I would be a very rich woman.... During pregnancy, quitting smoking is even MORE important than usual. Smoking causes damage to the circulation and that includes the placenta, which is doing the heavy work of providing nutrition and oxygen to baby as well as removing waste products from baby. Damage it and babies are smaller, have problems with their development and, worse case scenario, babies die. It's as simple and as brutal as that. This short blog links to some websites and to the Quitline. It also has links to short, simple explanations about how to use nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) properly by Johanna Bou-Samra, a pharmacologist and tobacco treatment specialist. Yes, you CAN use NRT during pregnancy with very few exceptions and just a little tweaking to the way we use patches. These YouTube clips are not specific to pregnancy, so please share them with the people you know and perhaps they can stop or help others to stop smoking too. https://maternity-matters.com.au///17-smoking-in-pregnancy
