25.01.2022 Congratulations to our Mater Private Hospital Townsville Pastoral Care and Women's services teams - Winners of the 2020 Mercy in Action Team award... When a Tokelauan couple was severely distressed following the death of their premature twins, the Pastoral Care and Women’s Services team responded with compassion, openness, and great cultural sensitivity. The team, through their gentle support, uncovered the couple’s traumatic history of three previous miscarriages. Learnin...g that traditionally Tokelauan babies are buried near family and their nearest relative was in Sydney, they worked to find an alternative to a Townsville burial. Burial was further complicated by the 20-week birth and live delivery of one twin, and the death in utero of the other. Legally, one birth was registered and the other was not. The two babies could not be buried together. Pastoral Care Practitioner Cheryl Rens, Nurse Unit Manager Michele Burge and the team, worked to find a solution with the Funeral Directors who generously supported the family. The team suggested a naming ritual to the couple, as a way to seek comfort through their traditions. The ritual was held at the Maternity Unit with some of the local Tokelauan community present. The family brought symbols like a grass mat for the babies to be placed on for the ceremony. The family sang together and said the rosary in Tokelauan. The experience for the couple, their community, and the Mater People present has left a lasting impression of what ‘Mercy in Action as a Team’ looks like.

In my role, I provide social, emotional and spiritual support for patients and staff. Why are the Mater Values important to you? 07.01.2022 The very first Mater People Awards were held last week with 49 finalists and 15 winners from right across Queensland coming together to celebrate some of Mater's finest who have achieved excellence in serving the community and embodied the Mater values. Mater CEO, Dr Peter Steer also announced the Mater Lifetime Contribution Award known as The Catherine McAuley Medallion. This award honours an employee, past or present, who like Catherine McAuley, devoted their lives t...o Mater’s Mission and Values, serving in the spirit of the Sisters of Mercy. That honour went to Trudy Clarke (pictured), who retired last year after 17 years of service at Mater Private Hospital Townsville, initially in Pastoral Care before taking on the role of the region’s first Director of Mission. Trudy was recognised for her significant contribution to fostering an understanding of Mission not only in Townsville, but in the wider Catholic Health community across North and Central Queensland. Trudy retired in 2019 after 17 years of service at Mater Private Hospital Townsville, initially in Pastoral Care before taking on the role of the region’s first Director of Mission. She made a significant contribution to fostering understanding of Mission not only in Townsville, but in the wider Catholic Health community, giving generously of both her professional and personal time in service and becoming a well-known public face of Mater in the local community. Trudy took Pastoral Care from a ministry lovingly provided by the Sisters, to a team of trained lay practitioners. Thanks to her example and leadership, and advocacy for the spiritual and physical health of patients and staff, they continue to provide a strong point of difference to other health care agencies in North Queensland. Trudy pioneered Clinical Pastoral Education within Mater, also offering this to others in pastoral ministry in various denominations throughout Central and North Queensland. She drove opportunities to educate and transform people not only through her daily interactions as a living embodiment of Catholic identity; but also, by enticing an inspiring network of guest speakers to North Queensland to help engage others. Trudy developed strong ties with the Diocesan office, being a member of the Bishop’s Advisory Board. She also instigated strong community involvement in the annual Stable of the Strand, a combined community of churches event, visited by thousands every year. Trudy was integral in establishing a strong liturgical life among Mater People, and was instrumental in providing staff, patients and the wider community with an opportunity to know our Catholic identity through the vision and mission of Catherine McAuley, during Mercy Week. Through steadfast commitment, Trudy has always embraced the practical, living legacy of Catherine McAuley and the Sisters of Mercy, and has ensured this spirit lives on, enriching the lives of everyone she meets.

07.01.2022 Today is the anniversary of the Black Hawk tragedy, the worst peacetime military aviation disaster in Australias history. 18 men died when two helicopters collided mid-air in a training exercise near Townsville on the 12th June, 1996. We remember those who died and those who were instrumental in the aftermath especially the emergency services personnel. It was a terrible disaster for a city intrinsically connected to Defence. May perpetual light shine upon them and may they rest in peace. Amen.
