14.01.2022 'GREATER LESS THAN' Number Game. By Ryanin Bryce. Suitable for any age, just change the number range! Start small, then adapt to suit. For example; 0 to 100... 0 to 1000 0 to 1 million 0 to 10 using decimals to 2 places. Keep it upbeat & fast for fun. 1. Start with simple e.g. 0 to 10 for youngsters. 2. Write the number in a secret place... behind IWB, paper, hand, draw a number from the box. 3. Student/s take turns guessing a number e.g. in circle, hand up, in groups 4. Teacher (or student once learned the game & numbers well) says either 'greater' or 'less' than. Extend the range once they have learned the basics and confident with the game. LATER Ask students their thinking. Elicit & teach strategic thinking questions e.g. numberline, 100cm ruler or measure, charts to show numbers for those who dont catch on. All my students from yr 1 to 7 love this game. For older confident kids I use decimals or up to 100 000s for a challenge...when they are ready. Questions to pose. Why is the half way number useful to start? What symbol is needed to write that? What thinking is needed to 'get it' in the least number of guesses How can we help each other remember the guesses? Reiterate! It is best to go fast pace & keep the excitement happening with an up-beat manner in the beginning. Keep number range within the students capacity.

10.01.2022 Something to think about! Highly-decorated & cluttered classrooms are more of a distraction than an aid to learning. This has been found to be particularly so for children in the early primary years with sensory sensitivity or children with special learning needs.
