21.01.2022 A Book We Loved Mayflies by Andrew OHagan Like the best novels, Mayflies speaks to a far deeper truth within the frameworkof a deceptively simple story.... James and Tully are Scottish malcontents and best friends, brought together by music, books and a hunger for life and experiences beyond the narrow streets. These heady days set the scene for a lifelong friendshipthat is disrupted only by Tullys illness. Throughout, OHagans writing is perfect. At first the tone is joyous and uncontained, before moving an elegiac stateliness as the two friends confront the unthinkable together. I cant recommend this life-affirming, heartrending book about friendship, male or otherwise, enough. GAVIN
21.01.2022 The second, and now penultimate , of what we are reading during this truncated lockdown period. Tessa Hadley is someone I’ve never read before, but her finely honed insights into the swirling affections and resentments that make up a family were a lovely balm during these strange few days in South Australia. Think a slightly more bucolic and English Anne Tyler. I also loved this line from the novel ‘Sophy and Grantham devoured their books: reading was a freedom torn out ...of the day’s regulated fabric.’ (Thanks to @paperback_bookshop for the recommendation )
20.01.2022 We are hiring and would love you to either apply or tell your many book-loving, ex-bookshop worker friend(s) about this very rare opportunity. :)

20.01.2022 We are very, very excited to invite you to join us for our next Virtual Meet the Author session with bestselling author of The Ghost Empire and Saga Lands Richard Fidler, as he launches his ode to Prague The Golden Maze: A biography of Prague. We will be bringing Richard, who will be in-conversation with Matilda Bookshops Gavin Williams, to you via Zoom on Wednesday September 2nd at 7pm. Bookings can be made bit.ly/3iwBC5Y or via the events page at www.matildabookshop.com.au... In 1989, Richard Fidler was living in London as part of the provocative Australian comedy trio The Doug Anthony All Stars when revolution broke out across Europe. Excited by this galvanising historic, human, moment, he travelled to Prague, where a decrepit police state was being overthrown by crowds of ecstatic citizens. His experience of the Velvet Revolution never let go of him. Thirty years later Fidler returns to Prague to uncover its glorious and grotesque history: a jumble of gothic towers, baroque palaces and zig-zag lanes that has survived plagues, pogroms, Nazi terror and Soviet tanks. Founded in the ninth Century, Prague gave the world the golem, the robot, and the worlds biggest statue of Stalin, a behemoth that killed almost everyone who touched it. Following the story of Prague from its origins in medieval darkness to its uncertain present, Fidler does what he does so well - curates an absolutely engaging and compelling history of a place. You will learn things you never knew, with a tour guide who is erudite, inquisitive, and the best storyteller you could have as your companion. All that you will need to join this Meet the Author event is an internet connection and a device (computer, phone, tablet) with audio. The Zoom application will download automatically when you are invited to the event, or you can download Zoom to your device ahead of time. You will be sent a link to Meet the Author:Richard Fidler the day before the event. Tickets are $5 or you can purchase Ticket + Book option for just $39.99 (The Golden Maze hardback RRP $39.99). 13.01.2022 Matilda Bookshop Book Club June 2020 . . This month at Matilda Bookshop Book Club we discussed the simply gorgeous The Things She Owned by Katherine Tamiko Arguile. Set between Tokyo during and after WW2, contemporary London and the spiritual islands of Okinawa, this book is a beautiful evocation of place, memory, loss, grief, and transformation. The things of the title are the objects passed along from mother to daughter and hold an uncanny power. We at book club thought tha...t the writing of Japanese culture and ritual and the writing of food was exquisite. The objects of the book are beautifully handled and guide us through the many secret layers of the narrative. Many felt that the scope and depth of the project was incredible for a first-time novelist. Prompting a discussion about (how much we understand of) Japan during and after the war, inherited trauma, the porousness between autobiography and fiction, and the ways in which nature can heal us, this book had us highly engaged. 13.01.2022 A Book We Loved by Amina Cain This is a delicate and spare exploration of art and creativity, passion and friendship between women, and what it costs to authentically express our desires. When the cleaning woman at an art gallery marries into wealth, she realises her doorway into the world of art and literature is not made any easier by her new found privilege. I loved this razor-sharp meditation on womens relationship to artmaking, class, and sexuality. ... #books #abookweloved #matildabookshop #shoplocal #bookstagram

12.01.2022 A Book We Loved The Rain Heron by Robbie Arnott This is another fiercely imaginative, wildly creative novel from one of Australias best young writers. As with his debut, Flames, The Rain Heron illuminates a unique vision, as if transcribed from deep within a fever-dream, of a world inhabited by forces outside of our understanding and how humans blithely impact on this world. As well as the fabled creatures Arnott magically conjures, the characters, their needs and... loves, are warmly drawn. If you like to be amazed, confounded and left wide-eyed in wonder by an authors breathtaking audacity and incandescent story-telling ability, this is a novel for you. 10.01.2022 Day 3, and fingers crossed for the last time, of what we were reading during this short but intense lockdown. This one is from Jo and yesterday’s, for any completists, came from Gavin. 09.01.2022 A Book We Loved Sorrow and Bliss by Meg Mason This is Marthas story, she has struggled with life, love, family and a sense of self most of her life. When unable to come out from under her desk at the age of 17yrs old Martha realised that she is missing a vital piece of information, an important tool to navigate the world. Martha struggles with a mental illness, something that cannot be seen so is tricky to diagnose but it affects her every day. Meg Mason as a truth tell...er, offers us Marthas story and from page one I was invested. Appreciating with dark wit and audacity, I was invited to walk with Martha as she exposes us to the complexity and contradictions in people, of lifes ups and downs (= sorrow and bliss as the title suggests.) Great read that filled me with a sense of hope. Kim #books #abookweloved #matildabookshop #shoplocal #supportlocalauthors #sprintimereads #megmason

04.01.2022 Matilda Bookshop Book Club July 2020 This month at Matilda Bookshop Book Club we discussed the visceral and captivating The Rain Heron by Robbie Arnott. In this fable/thriller/fantasy/ecological fiction we see the mythical rain heron itself captured in scintillating prose. Arnott describes the colour of rain, and all things water, and all things creaturely in the most bodily felt and tactile way. We at book club were impressed and moved by the imaginative ambition of this p...roject and the writing of the environment. Some were not totally convinced by the fictional (post-ecological catastrophe/war-zone) world created, or thought the characterisation a little flat, but others were mesmerised by this story of the savage relationship between humans and nature, and were fully taken along for the ride. We all agreed that the jaw-dropping squid-ink harvesting section was unforgettable. Molly #matildabookshopbookckub #matildabookshop #winterreads #mollymurn
