25.01.2022 WARNING to all our clients. We have received a report that a dog was poisoned with rat bait at Pioneer Park, Malabar this week. Very sadly this dog died. ... A packet of rat poison was found near to the toilet block. There is a bowl for dogs to drink from close by. It is thought that the dog drank water contaminated with the poison. Rat poison affects the body by stopping the blood from clotting. Signs of poisoning include pale gums, weakness, collapse, blood in urine or stool, bruising of the skin, lethargy and reduced appetite. Please contact Matraville Vet Practice on 1300 628 838 if you have any concerns about your pets regarding possible poisoning or any other unusual clinical signs. We sincerely hope that no other pet or family is affected by poisoning in the area but warn owners to be vigilant. Feel free to share this information with people you know with dogs in the area.

20.01.2022 How to puppy-proof your house? Like a curious toddler, puppies and kittens are eager to explore - and chew - their new environment. This makes ‘puppy proofing’ your house essential. Make sure that: ... (1) all cables and cords are tucked away, (2) food is sealed in containers stored out of reach, (3) rubbish bins are sturdy and unable to be tipped over and (4) anything you don’t want chewed is put away. 18.01.2022 We love hearing where our patient's names come from. This lovely little Whippet pup is named Akira. Her owner was researching names and came across Akira, a Japanese unisex name with various meanings including sunlight, bright and clear and graceful strength. All perfect for this little angel!

16.01.2022 Did you know that cats can be desexed as early as 12 weeks and usually 12-16 weeks. They really need to weigh a minimum of 1.3kg due to the increased anaesthetic risk. Desexing is important for a variety of reasons, including avoiding unwanted litters, reducing the risk of serious diseases and types of cancers and helping prevent undesirable behaviours. If you have a female cat, desexing her early is particularly important. Female cats can become pregnant from only 4 months of age, and once they are in heat, they often stay in heat until they mate with a male cat. This means constant yowling, scratching at the door and attempts to escape your house. We recommend desexing cats at 4 months old. Chat to us today about desexing your female cat.

10.01.2022 Indy is one of our beautiful elderly patients At 19 years old he has been around a long time and we were concerned when he became very fussy with his food. We admitted him into hospital for some tests including blood tests and imaging. ... Here he is having an ultrasound to examine his internal organs. What a cool cat he is! We were very pleased that only mild changes were seen in his intestines and he was able to be sent home the same day with some medication

09.01.2022 Pablo is modelling his new haircut and we think he looks very smart! However - the reason he needed a haircut was more serious than just wanting to be a bit cooler over summer. Pablo came in to the Matraville Veterinary Practice very wobbly on his back legs. We found a tick attached and he was showing the early signs of tick paralysis. The short clip was necessary to look for any other ticks. ... Pablo was treated with tick anti-serum and we are very pleased to report he is recovering very well. We thought this was the ideal opportunity to warn all our clients on the dangers of tick paralysis. Signs of tick paralysis include:- wobbliness or weakness in the legs, trouble swallowing, vomiting, change in bark or meow and laboured breathing. Tick paralysis can be extremely serious and even deadly in some cases. Prevention of tick paralysis is always preferable. There are a variety of products available to prevent ticks in dogs and cats. Our friendly staff are more than happy to discuss tick prevention options for your pets. Please contact the Matraville Veterinary Practice if you have any concerns regarding ticks and your pets. 1300 628 838
