24.01.2022 3 Popular Exercises I Am No Longer Using http://mikereinold.com/3-popular-exercises-i-am-no-longer-/ Just because an exercise is popular, doesnt mean its a g...ood option for everyone. I wanted to share 3 more exercises that I am not going to use anymore. These are pretty popular exercises, so I expect many to disagree with me. I actually have no problem with you using these exercises, I just wanted to share some reasons why I have started to critically assess the value of them, and have considered not performing them anymore. #physicaltherapy

23.01.2022 Heres a quick refresher on changing extensibility and stretch perception. In short, if we do not "lengthen" muscle, fascia, or nervous system as rapidly as mob...ility changes, we are changing perception of stretch. We normally expect these rapid changes to have just as transient improvement unless loaded or reinforced regularly. The study summarized in this blog post on NOI Jam showed longer than expected improvements in hamstring mobility - 3 weeks after a single session of 3 sets, 5 reps, 5 second holds. Significantly less duration and time with longer improvements. Why? The thought is that the stronger perception from the added neurodynamic component may have changed the perception of stretch more effectively than other forms of stretching, leading to the lasting improvements. Improvements were seen on both the ipsilateral stretched LE and the contralateral LE. Its great to have your biases challenged and with mine going the way of lighter and lighter year after year, sometimes its good to have the pendulum swing the other way and have some "stronger" options if the light ones you normally use are not demonstrating the expected rapid changes.

23.01.2022 A good article on the treatment of pain.

23.01.2022 Something to keep in mind with any piece of research.

23.01.2022 Episode 493: Science Saturday - Perfectly Imperfect?, The Asymmetrical Human Body [Perspective] . In life, there are many things that are aesthetically appeal...ing when aligned and symmetrical like cars, shoes, and buildings. However, there is also beauty and purpose to things that are asymmetrical. There is a common saying to strive for a balanced lifestyle, but what about all the fuss that our bodies need to be perfectly aligned and balanced? . Regardless of what you have heard or read in the past, the body is naturally asymmetric and may not always be perfectly aligned! Our organs are not symmetric. Our lungs are not symmetric. There is a very high likelihood that your bones, muscles, and posture is not perfectly aligned and symmetric! The human body is magnificent because of its ability to adapt and move accordingly to changing environments. . However, yes there may be benefit to promoting balance under certain circumstances and conditions if someones movement pattern and daily behavior is causing them pain and dysfunction due to imbalance. BUT, this doesnt mean every healthy individual without pain needs to sound the alarm if they perceive their body as being misaligned or not symmetric! We do not need to stand and move like robots! Think about it this way, most people have a dominant hand and stance when it comes to performing daily activities or sports (i.e., right handed, punch/kick with their right, swing righty). Being able to do things better on one side/direction vs. the other clearly means asymmetry, which in some cases may be a good thing. . A study by Gray et al. 2016 examined total muscle thickness of the obliques and transversus abdominis combined in Cricket fast bowlers with and without low back pain. The group actually found that individuals with symmetrical muscle thickness side to side HAD pain versus those with asymmetrical muscle thickness side to side DID NOT have pain. Other research has found similar asymmetries side-to-side in athletes independent of pain characteristics. If your job is to perform a certain movement in one direction over and over (sport), well that asymmetry in strength and mobility may be helping you. . Moral of the story - your bodys asymmetries and alignment will be shaped by your lifestyle, activities, and daily habits. Focusing on improving alignment and your asymmetries is dependent upon the individual, there is no hard rule! Be skeptical of what you think or told your body needs vs. what is perfect fine being imperfect. Reference: Gray J, Aginsky KD, Derman W et al (2016) Symmetry, not asymmetry, of abdominal muscle morphology is associated with low back pain in cricket fast bowlers. 07.01.2022 Stretching is one tool, not an end in of itself. Some of the things you need to consider are what constitutes functional range of movement for the activities you engage with, what strength you require to put yourself through that range of motion, and what is the underlying cause of your inability to move to where you would like to. As the article notes, stretching feels good, but it does not follow that it is necessarily good without a purpose for it.

07.01.2022 Episode 526: What Are The Core Slings? [Anatomy Lesson] . What are these slings The Prehab Guys have been posting about READ MORE ... . Slings (also referred to as chains and/or loops) are a functional component of the musculoskeletal system. If we think of our torso as a core cylinder, there are multiple slings that wrap around the cylinder in different orientations. The cylinder depends on strength and balance from the slings to provide a stable foundation. . Muscle Anatomy Of The Core Cylinder Slings Diaphragm Lateral Sling = ipsilateral internal oblique & gluteus medius Anterior Oblique Sling = external oblique & contralateral adductors Posterior Oblique Sling = Latissimus Dorsi & contralateral gluteus maximus Deep Longitudinal SubSystem = erector spinae, sacrotuberous ligament, biceps femoris, peroneus longus, & anterior tibialis Bottom = pelvic floor . So why are slings important The bodys core cylinder depends on the slings to facilitate dynamic movement and stability across multiple joints throughout the bodySlings help to transfer force through the trunk and facilitate rotational movements. It is the muscular and myofasical components of slings that make powerful baseball/cricket pitches, baseball/golf swings, and lacrosse/hockey shots possible. . This information is based on a functional school of thought viewing the musculoskeletal system. This post does not include every myofasical line/meridian described elsewhere. We did not go into depth describing the respected myofascial components of slings . 05.01.2022 Is standing balance altered in individuals with chronic low back pain? A systematic review - Jan 2018 Conclusion: Results suggest that balance is impaired in i...ndividuals with chronic low back pain when compared to healthy individuals.... Balance assessments should be completed for individuals with chronic low back pain. Results from balance assessments should be used to indicate areas of improvement and help guide the course of treatment, as well as reassess as treatment progresses. 04.01.2022 This is a long documentary, but given how often training in massage talks about fascia, it is worth looking at where the state of knowledge is currently at.

03.01.2022 This article requires some anatomy and physiology knowledge to interpret, but it provides a theoretical framework for why trigger points form and how they function. 01.01.2022 Association between hand muscle thickness and whole-body skeletal muscle mass in healthy adults: a pilot study. - Sept 17 Conc: The present findings suggest t...hat two muscle thicknesses in the hand are related to whole-body and/or appendicular skeletal muscle mass in healthy adults. Therefore, we propose that despite being smaller than other limb muscles, hand muscle thickness may be useful as surrogate indicator for assessing disease-related and age-related skeletal muscle loss.
