20.01.2022 For people with persistent pain, times of crises such as those we are currently experiencing can be extra challenging. Anxiety, stress, social/financial insecur...ity, poor sleep & uncertainly can fuel the pain cycle. It is important now more than ever that we help these individuals to cope with such issues. The definition of a "flare up" is open to interpretation but recent evidence suggest it is characterised by an increase in symptoms which is sufficient to negatively impact on function and overall well-being. (https://www.sciencedirect.com//a/abs/pii/S1526590018305224) For those who currently might be struggling to control their pain, here are some tips that might help you along the way. Don't see a flare up as a "set back". It is instead an opportunity for reflection & learning. What things were going on in my life when the symptoms flared up? How might I address this going forward to reduce the risk of future flare ups"? It is ok to modify your activities in the short term. It is ok to reduce the volume of activity/exercise if needed. Please respect the symptoms. A flare up doesn't mean stop. It might simply involve activity modification in the short term. Speak to your healthcare provider by phone etc. A little bit of reassurance and planning goes a long way. A flare up can result in a "flight or fight response". Put another way it is a stressor. Things that we know buffer this stress response include physical activity, social support, optimism, healthy eating habits & sleep. Instead on focusing on the stressor, focus on how you can respond to it. Pause and reflect on the situation. When faced with a stressor such as pain, it is easy to fall into the trap of making decisions on "auto-pilot". This can lead to avoidance of activity, frustration and anxiety. Using mindfulness strategies etc, take time to thing about how you might respond differently. Stay focused on the end goal. A flare up can often lead people to believe that current management strategies aren't "working". Instead, realise that flare ups are common and to be expected for most people. Be reassured that this is part of the journey.



19.01.2022 Exercise physiology services were not exempted from GST when the GST legislation was passed in 1999, partly due to our recognition as an allied health profession only from 2006. Then there was wide spread growth of the profession after this date. Whilst exercise physiology meets the requirements of an eligible health service under GST law, all State and Federal Treasurers need to agree to remove GST from exercise physiology services. This is a difficult exercise as borne out ...by the 18-year campaign to exempt sanitary products. ESSA has been advocating on the issue of GST to address historical and policy anomalies for many years, including the recent meetings with the Federal Treasury. This issue will also form part of ESSA’s election platform in 2019, which you can help with. WHAT SHOULD YOU DO? Write to your local Federal and/or State Member for Parliament, and/or your State Senators and/or the Federal (The Hon Josh Frydenberg MP) and/or State Treasurer about the anomalies of exercise physiology services not being GST-free. We have prepared a template letter (Word document) for you to use which asks each politician to outline his or her support or otherwise in removing GST on exercise physiology. Anxiety triggers our fight or flight response, preparing our body for self protection by getting ready to physically fight or to run away from danger. This is a normal response that happens for everyone - we've all had moments when we've had symptoms of anxiety - such as before an exam, or when we were about to make a presentation. However, anxiety becomes a problem when these symptoms prevent you from living life effectively - limiting your relationships or inhibiting your ability to study or do your work.
