21.01.2022 Opening NIght for another Odd Couple .... Rose Vallen has been doing shows with me since May 1980 when we did Finian’s Rainbow for Northern at the Shedley. This means she is now 30 years old give or take a decade or two. For MBM, Rose has starred in and choreographed Return To The Forbidden Planet and choreographed everything from The Producers to The Full Monty and more recently Nunsense A-Men. She supported, guided, advised and told me off on a regular basis in that time... and nearly every time I deserved it. In so many of the shows we did together her sadly departed hubby Glenn Vallen also supported, guided, advised and told me off on a regular basis and every time I deserved it. They were a fabulous team to work with, being part of many of my favourite shows, especially Ahren’s & Flaherty’s Lucky Stiff and of course The Producers. Earlier this year Rose went completely mad when she agreed to co-direct The Odd Couple with me. I’m not famous for smart moves but this one of the best things I ever agreed to try. It has worked out well because it provides an extra perspective. She knows nothing is impossible because she taught me a time step when I was dressed as a nun. But having two people steer the same ship has been a real learning curve for both of us. Without her love, theatre smarts and support, this show would have never been quite as much fun. Can’t ever repay what Rose has done for this show and so many others. She has courage and strength and never takes a backward step, she takes people with her. May you be around for many years yet Rosie, this world needs more people like you. When I get it right it’s my direction and when I move off the beaten track it’s yours, SMILE!!!!! 10.01.2022 Odd Couple for many years . Preview tonight Back in 1983 I first met David Grybowski. We worked together on Don’s Party at La Mama in Hindmarsh with Bruno Knez. I then directed him in Same Time Next Year opposite Sue Wylie in 1987 in the La Mama Cellar. I saw him star in many shows for many years from The King And I with The Met to The Kiss Of The Spider Woman with Jimmy Zoole Presents. In 2008 when went Driving Miss Daisy at Holden Street Theatres with Issy Norton and Roha...n Richards, David played the faithful son Boolie Werthan. Then Reservoir Dogs bit and he played crime boss, Joe Cabot. When we went into the jury room for 12 Angry Men, David was there to convince a table full of anger to search for the truth and he handed me my coat when we finally left the room. Now we are going into emotional lockdown together, for four rollercoaster weeks as finicky Felix and easygoing Oscar in Neil Simon’s greatest comedy. Simon’s genius has inspired us, the whole cast and crew have worked so hard and I get to work opposite an actor whose work I have admired and enjoyed for 37 years. All our shows together have happened in Hindmarsh. And for tonight’s preview we are still there. This is special. We have our $20 Preview tonight at 7.30 p.m. We then run until November 28.
