25.01.2022 The Legend of Cliff Young: The 61 Year Old Farmer Who Won the Worlds Toughest Race In 1983 a 61 Year Old Farmer Won a 544 mile endurance race because he ran th...roughout the night while the younger professional athletes slept An Unlikely Competitor: Every year, Australia hosts 543.7-mile (875-kilometer) endurance racing from Sydney to Melbourne. It is considered among the worlds most grueling ultra-marathons. The race takes five days to complete and is normally only attempted by world-class athletes who train specially for the event. These athletes are typically less than 30 years old and backed by large companies such as Nike. In 1983, a man named Cliff Young showed up at the start of this race. Cliff was 61 years old and wore overalls and work boots. To everyones shock, Cliff wasnt a spectator. He picked up his race number and joined the other runners. The press and other athletes became curious and questioned Cliff. They told him, "Youre crazy, theres no way you can finish this race." To which he replied, "Yes I can. See, I grew up on a farm where we couldnt afford horses or tractors, and the whole time I was growing up, whenever the storms would roll in, Id have to go out and round up the sheep. We had 2,000 sheep on 2,000 acres. Sometimes I would have to run those sheep for two or three days. It took a long time, but Id always catch them. I believe I can run this race." When the race started, the pros quickly left Cliff behind. The crowds and television audience were entertained because Cliff didnt even run properly; he appeared to shuffle. Many even feared for the old farmers safety. The Tortoise and the Hare: All of the professional athletes knew that it took about 5 days to finish the race. In order to compete, one had to run about 18 hours a day and sleep the remaining 6 hours. The thing is, Cliff Young didnt know that! When the morning of the second day came, everyone was in for another surprise. Not only was Cliff still in the race, he had continued jogging all night. Eventually Cliff was asked about his tactics for the rest of the race. To everyones disbelief, he claimed he would run straight through to the finish without sleeping. Cliff kept running. Each night he came a little closer to the leading pack. By the final night, he had surpassed all of the young, world-class athletes. He was the first competitor to cross the finish line and he set a new course record. When Cliff was awarded the winning prize of $10,000, he said he didnt know there was a prize and insisted that he did not enter for the money. He ended up giving all of his winnings to several other runners, an act that endeared him to all of Australia. Continued Inspiration: In the following year, Cliff entered the same race and took 7th place. Not even a displaced hip during the race stopped him. Cliff came to prominence again in 1997, aged 76, when he attempted to raise money for homeless children by running around Australias border. He completed 6,520 kilometers of the 16,000-kilometer run before he had to pull out because his only crew member became ill. Cliff Young passed away in 2003 at age 81. Today, the "Young-shuffle" has been adopted by ultra-marathon runners because it is considered more energy-efficient. At least three champions of the Sydney to Melbourne race have used the shuffle to win the race. Furthermore, during the Sydney to Melbourne race, modern competitors do not sleep. Winning the race requires runners to go all night as well as all day, just like Cliff Young.

17.01.2022 So first up we have Fife Youth Jazz Orchestra with two interconnected videos that we think show the passion and commitment of the young musicians to their music.... We are very lucky here at the Lochgelly Centre to host FYJO rehearsals every week and we love to here their music projected throughout the centre on Thursday nights! FYJO was founded in 1976 by the energetic and award-winning Jazz musician and composer Richard Michael OBE and is completely unique in Scotland. Over the years Richard has introduced hundreds of youngsters between 8 and 24 to the particular musical freedom that Jazz, with its emphasis on improvisation offers. In both clips we see not only the enthusiasm that Richard has for Jazz as a musical style and the freedom it gives musicians to work around and make their own but also his passion for teaching. By building up the ensemble piece by piece you really get the feel for each individual instrument and we think it definitely allows you to appreciate the orchestra as a whole. Following his philosophy that Mistakes are cool! and that FYJO rehearsals are where its OK to get it wrong, Richard has given his young musicians the opportunity to grow as individuals as well as becoming confident instrumentalists. One mark of the success of his inspirational teaching is that band members are regularly accepted onto the jazz course at the Royal Conservatoire for Scotland in Glasgow. We hope you enjoy both of todays videos from FYJO, we couldnt help but smile at the infectious energy that both Richard and his students bring to their rehearsals and how attentive and focussed they all are while also having fun. A big thank you to FYJO for allowing us to showcase them today, we cannot wait to have the back in the Centre and filling our Thursday nights with Jazz music again soon! This video has been shared with the permission of Fife Youth Jazz Orchestra. #ShineOnFife #FifeTheatre #FifeYoungMusicians

09.01.2022 The rule of 3! When you find a bar or two bars of music that you struggle with, turn it into an exercise. Focus in on that section and aim to play it 3 whole times correctly. That means; - tempo is regular... - dynamics are correct - expressive techniques such as accents, staccato and slur lines are executed - rests are executed accurately - fingering is correct - posture considered (relaxed, curved fingers, straight back, not close to the piano & your piano stool seats you higher above the keyboard rather than lower. Measure this by your arm being level or just above the keys) The rule of 3: Play through 3 times ACCURATELY with the above elements to the section being played. If you get it right twice and wrong once. Start the cycle of 3 again. This is a great discipline when it comes to PRODUCTIVE PRACTICE on any instrument. Of course the ultimate goal is to play it until you CANT get it wrong. The worst you can do is play it correctly once and move on. Try to embrace repetition as much as you can in your practice time. Repetition on the parts that need work, not the parts we can already play ;) Happy practicing all!

08.01.2022 My first piano lesson in 2021 was a delightful one with Bernie here showing me his near perfect composition Awakening. He displays a deep understanding of structure in his chordal ideas and a mature restraint in his various rhythmic, melodic and pitch ideas. I have never met Bernie and he only started his online lessons on ZOOM in September. His progress is due to his great interest in music and how he applies himself each day and week. A very proud teacher here! Well done Bernie!

02.01.2022 Franz Liszt died on 31 July 1886. He is considered the worlds first pop star in the modern sense, complete with scandalous stories involving womanising, alc...ohol and hysterical fans. Liszt captivated audiences with his incredible skills on the piano and toured Vienna, Paris and Weimar, giving the city to its second golden era after Goethe. See more

02.01.2022 Dinner time or piano time?

02.01.2022 Captivating performance.

01.01.2022 One year ago we had our Just Piano Lessons mid year concert. It is saddening to not have one last concert before I leave for Canberra. The students always play well & have the invaluable experience of performing and listening. Meanwhile they remain focused on their studies. Perhaps an online concert can be organised? We will make sure their music is shared and recognised as that is what it is all about :) Matt
