22.01.2022 Crowning Glory Finalist in the Nillumbik and Kilgour Art Prize. There is corner of a foreign field that is forever England. Well almost. ... Half-obscured behind a row of trees from the traffic banked back along Penang’s Burmah Rd, lies the mouldering pile that is the Queen Victoria Memorial Statue. Already long-dead, she was enshrined in 1930 as the embodiment of Empire. At least the occupying Japanese forces during WWII certainly thought so; they had the lions around the plinth have their Union Jack shields cut off, her body concealed behind propaganda hoardings and the Imperial Japanese flag flown from her head. They needn’t have bothered. More efficiently than any of the clumsy Japanese efforts, the citizens of contemporary Penang have swept away all vestiges of colonialism - simply by ignoring her. Dwarfed by a basketball court that abuts the plinth, she has been forgotten by all - save the mad dogs and Australians, out in the midday sun.

18.01.2022 She was just ten years old before being rendered irrelevant. Almost double the height of the Statue of Liberty, Kiev’s Mother of the Motherland only a decade before the USSR voted itself into extinction. With the Soviet economy already deeply stressed, the construction was controversial from the outset. And current financial shortages mean the eternal flame at its base nowadays is lit only on the biggest national holidays. Like the monuments of antiquity, it may only be a matter of time before the prevailing political creed decides she be re-purposed for another use, or scrapped altogether.

18.01.2022 O Glorious Leader Posting this picture today in recognition of the election taking place today in the US. Vote!

17.01.2022 Home of the Brave The ebb and flow of empires can be charted by the monuments they leave. Successes (and failures) are mythologised as bronze affirmations until, in time, the myths come to define the events themselves. Defence of these myths reach absurd levels in New York, with the apartments now occupying Wall Street’s former financial bastions protected by barriers and armed guards, because the symbolism of the name is more potent than the mundane reality. ... Here, the statues advertising the capitalist mantra are barricaded from their disciples; victims of a congregation so enraptured they have long since lost perspective of their original beliefs. This is in fact the very first picture I created in the whole series

16.01.2022 Egotistical, megalomaniacal tyrants have the best art. It stands to reason. Fair democratic societies rarely quantities of great art for the simple fact that they use the state wealth for the betterment of many rather than the whims of an elite. Conveniently for livelihoods of contemporary Parisians, their history is punctuated with more than the usual quota of egomaniacal despots. Commissioned by the Sun King Louis XIV, this is Mercury, patron god of financial gain, commer...ce, travellers, luck, trickery and thieves. From the Tuileries Garden it bore witness to the consequence of imperial excess when the revolutionaries gave their monarch King Louis XVI the ultimate customer feedback at the guillotine. It now presides in silent vigil over the endless flow of tourists who flock to Paris to soak up the legacy bestowed by some of the world’s greediest arseholes. Some countries have all the luck.

12.01.2022 #Nofilter. One of my series of oil paintings on mirrored aluminium utilising the cheesiest, most tired hashtags currently being over-used in the digital lexicon. If one is judged by their digital footprint, then, god help me, this will be my legacy. ... This painting will be exhibited from Saturday at Lucid 2021 @beinartgallery. It's a pretty amazing lineup of international artists so you should come by from 6 - 9pm for a look-see and a chat. ----- #matthewquick #artist #painting #thednalife #Art_Spotlight #juxtapoz #w1curates #creativeuprising #collectart #hifructose #huffpostarts #thejealouscurator #anothermagazine #designmilk #fubiz #madeinshoreditch #artist_features #artbankau #designiskinky #hypebeast #behance #colossal #lucid #darkart #oilainting #newcontemporary #oilon mirror #melbourneart #beinartcollective #australianartist

11.01.2022 Work in progress on this commission earlier this year, just as we were heading into the first lockdown. The optimism and hope conveyed in the painting would become more than just an academic exercise as the months progressed.

07.01.2022 Those Early Days of Hope This was the picture I began the morning the Brexit vote was announced. Now 4 years, 3 prime ministers later and with a no deal exit looming, it seems as relevant today as when I first conceived it.

06.01.2022 Pure Exploitation Really, the image says it all.
