23.01.2022 SYDNEY ROYAL EASTER SHOW 2019 2nd Prize Handmade By RENEE MATTHEWS Luddenham NSW The Sydney Royal holds the biggest Arts & Crafts Competition in Australia, attracting over 4,900 entries in a total of almost 300 classes.... This amazing show is Australias Biggest annual ticketed event with almost 1 Million visitors through the gates. I have admired the talent Ive seen over so many years when attending this show and been so inspired by the time and effort people put into their work and the passion they have. To have something Ive made on display is such a dream come true for me! Seeing my saddle for so long in my workshop as I work on it then seeing it up on a stand in the show cabinet for people to look at throughout the show is so surreal to me every year! The first show was held in 1823 and is a big celebration of rural Australia in the heart of the city. It is a showcase of Australias best in arts, crafts, cattle, horses, sheep, woodchopping, food & wine and so much more. I hope you're all staying safe at the moment and are able to take a little break over this period of time and get to spend it doing something that makes you happy. Some of you may not get to spend this Christmas in the location you had hoped for or with the people closest to you but hopefully you’ll find ways to spend some quality time even if it’s over the phone or a video call, maybe even write them a letter today that you can post, doesn’t eve...n need to be long, I’m sure that would mean a lot to them I know it would to me. Your time can sometimes be the greatest gift you can give to someone else. Our worlds are all so connected now especially through our phones and social media which is awesome because it means no one needs to feel or be alone this time of year if they don't want to be, if each of us make an effort to reach out to at least one person we know just to say ‘I'm thinking of you’ or ask them how they are and really listen that could mean a lot especially in these times and could really help lift someone out of a slump. . 16.01.2022 ...SADDLE MAKING-Behind The Scenes... Making the seat of AMYS Custom Trick Riding Saddle being made. Fitting the seat correctly is an important part of every saddle I make. I begin with leather cut from the best and strongest part of the hide with the tightest grain, this is so important so it will maintain that strength over the life of your saddle. I then shape and mould the leather over the saddle tree. This process has many steps, involves exact measurements, special ...tools and techniques to ensure the seat is finished smooth, tight, even and the same on both sides of your saddle. The process I use has small differences depending on the type of saddle Im making because the seat shape and surrounding area changes. 10.01.2022 HAND STITCHING BRIDGETS SADDLE Hand stitching is a traditional skill that has a very important roll in saddle making and is a great indicator of quality when you view any saddle if the parts that require stitching by hand are done in a neat, even and correct way. Every saddle I make has a Hand Stitched Cheyenne Roll or Binder (the part folded or round at the back edge of your seat). All horn caps and welts in swells and kneepads are also hand stitched. Hand stitching is v...ery important for the strength, quality and longevity of a saddle. The stitch style, thread type and thickness, stitch length, the number of stitches to the inch and equal tension of each stitch and their straightness is extremely important to the finished product. In this video I am "double hand stitching" using two needles at the same time and a diamond shaped awl blade to make the holes in the leather. The awl blade must be positioned a a certain angle every single time to achieve a straight stitch and have them lock down and together properly. Prior to starting I use a tool to mark out the little marks for each stitch to ensure that everyone will be an even distance apart. I use Double hand stitching in the making of my saddles because it is extremely strong, the action of the thread passing both ways through the leather means each thread is bearing load individually in opposite directions and will stay strong over the life of your saddle. - Renee Matthews
