21.01.2022 It’s a long winding road with innumerable hairpin turns to the Cap de Formentor cape on the northern most tip of Mallorca. High above the sea, this dramatic stretch of coastline is what drew me here. The spectacular steep cliff strangely shaped by the wind and the water that juts out into the deep blue Mediterranean Sea. As the storm clouds built, I set up my shot it felt like we were going to be in for a real show. I took a step back from my original frame in order to ...get some of the rocks and grass in the foreground I love the contrast they brought in against a brooding sky and jagged mountains. I took a few shots here chasing the exposure as it continued to grow darker. Then, the heavens opened. 20.01.2022 Some locations you go looking for, and others come looking for you. I got a flat tire on the way back from Millstream-Chickchester national park one afternoon and as I changed it, the light and sky began to change too. 18.01.2022 I was on my way home from scouting another location, and the sun had just set, when I saw the opportunity to capture this ethereal ocean mist, so I scrambled to get my tripod and camera set up before the light ran out completely. The sea was so peaceful and there was no wind, just the gentle ebb and flow of the ocean over the rocks. Because the water was so calm and the light was so low I had to take very long exposures - up to 4 minutes - to capture the movement of the water.... Long exposures like this can be problematic, because when you shoot for this length of time, all the mathematics required to calculate your exposures goes out the window. You never know if you’re shots worked out, until your film is developed. 10.01.2022 Sugarloaf Rock and Cape Naturalist hold a special place for me. As a child, I spent summer holidays here with my parents and grandparents, the place where my dad taught me to surf. Then it was surfing trips with my mates during much of my late teens and early 20s. I was in awe of the strength and power of the ocean back then, and - like any young boy I would test it, against my own, at the dangerous breaks we chose to surf. Today, I’m drawn back here with my camera instead ...of my board, still in awe of the ocean, but with a deep appreciation and respect for it now too. 02.01.2022 Sydney comes alive during Vivid the festival of light. The streets are full of cameras, professional and amateur, and people trying to capture the outdoor immersive light installations and projections. It’s both a photographers dream and worst nightmare. Taking long exposures here can be particularly problematic when halfway through your shot, someone bumps your camera or holds up an iPhone in the middle of your frame. Finding an elevated position on the harbour foreshore was... the only way to get a clear shot of the city streaked in colour.
