05.01.2022 With the National, State and local winter leagues of all sport - now in the swing of things (AFL/RUGBY/SOFTBALL) there has been a large number of inquiries about strength and conditioning programs, with the main focus being on speed and agility. With this being said, I am a big believer in coaching basic motor skills such as sprinting, jumping, landing, changing direction etc to my athletes. Sprinting is a motor skill and there are 2 factors to improve an athletes speed; 1. S...tride length = relative strength & mobility 2. Stride frequency = mechanics. Focus with the athlete is improving their relative strength via squats & deadlifts whereby athletes can improve their ability to APPLY large amounts of force into the ground (newtons 3rd law) then integrate this with acceleration/technique work (ie running fast = specificity) to improve the skill of sprinting. Cues; forward lean, violent arm drive forward, PUSH into the ground, keep back shin horizontal (as much as possible) to the ground.
