25.01.2022 Still a few spaces on my next 2 Underwater Photography Workshops here in Wollongong on the 7/8th March and 4/5Th April. Here's what one of my last kind students said about it: "I can highly recommend a tutorial with Matty Smith. Matty has an informal relaxed style that immediately puts you at ease such an important ingredient in running a successful course. Matty was generous with his time and was genuinely enthusiastic about sharing his knowledge" Naomi Strong, Melbourne. Bookings & Info at : https://www.mattysmithphoto.com/workshops/

18.01.2022 A busy day on the production line/kitchen table! A deep sea drop camera rig rated 300m for The Abyss Project and various dome ports to suit Aquatica, Nauticam & Isotta off to Cananda, Japan, USA and Australia. Talk to me about your custom UW camera project or dome port requirements. [email protected]
18.01.2022 A question I get asked a lot on my workshops is, "Is one strobe ok or do I really need two?" With this in mind I set myself a challenge last night, a single strobe, no fancy snoots or light shapers, just creative camera angles and strobe output to experiment with. It was a journey into contrast, textures and shapes. I really liked it.
18.01.2022 Incognito squid abstracts. It’s no secret that Cephalopods are one of my favourite subjects to shoot. This is a selection of abstract images from a small bay squid I was night diving with a few months ago. It was about the size of a plum and like a proper little cartoon character it had bags of colour and attitude. I have a great lighting technique I use to shoot these guys that works every time and guess what?! I still have one place remaining on my Advanced UW photo workshop next weekend in Wollongong, NSW where I’ll be teaching it :) I hope you’re enjoying your weekend. mattysmithphoto.com
15.01.2022 Well it's a few weeks since I last got wet, but this weekend's dive was a wonderful one! Heaps of critters to shoot at The Pipeline, thanks Kellie for finding that really colourful Blue Lined Occy :) Nikon Z7 // Nikkor 8-15mm F3.5-4.5 E ED // Aquatica Digital AD7 Housing // 4" Mini Dome
13.01.2022 Well what an incredible weekend the Nikon School workshop was in Narooma! We had an awesome group of 10 people and perfect ocean conditions, which made the fur seal encounters extra special. We also photographed whales, dolphins, sea eagles, sting rays and a whole aggregation of Port Jackson sharks. A special thanks to Franc and Clover of @underwatersafaris for their boat and guidance and of course @nikonaustralia for the event. Also to @chrisdalton for organising it all and making sure it went smoothly. We’ll be going again in the coming months, are you going to join us? #mynikonlife @aquaticadigital #mattysmithphoto @ Narooma, New South Wales
13.01.2022 Sydney has to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and we are so fortunate that the appeal continues under the surface too, right on our doorstep. What a wonderful weekend of diving from the sea horses and anglerfish under a boat jetty in Sydney Harbour to seadragons, colourful sea stars and a whole host of other wonder just outside the headlands. Thanks so much to Carl Fallon and Nathalie Michelle Simmonds from Abyss Project for the VIP day on their new beast of a dive boat the "Bidjigal Dreaming" With its 3 x 300hp motors you get to the dive sites prettyyyyy quickly!
10.01.2022 What a difference 1/125th of a second makes! More workshop dates are up on my website (link below) from beginner to masterclass. Learn this lighting technique and much, much more! Limited numbers due to social distancing, places will sell fast. For those who can't make it to NSW, I will be doing an online advanced workshop through the Nikon School website. Details coming soon. https://www.mattysmithphoto.com/workshops-home/ If Chewbacca were a fish, this would be it! The striate anglerfish, master of disguise and ambush!
09.01.2022 A very selfie indulgent picture with a seadragon! I couldn’t resist it as this guy was very comfortable with my presence and continued to feed as I took pictures. A question I get asked a lot is how to avoid backscatter in pictures. The truth is you can never fully eradicate it, and yes clever strobe positioning can help. But the biggest tip is to work on your buoyancy! Learn to levitate without touching anything and keeping those fins up! Most backscatter is self induced b...y a careless hand hold or fin waft, without the perpetrator even realising what they’ve done. If waiting for a subject whilst another photographer shoots, position yourself down current of them and when leaving a subject, move away in a down current direction. 08.01.2022 Looking forward to getting back out to The Solomon Islands shortly to shoot more of these guys and all the other treats out there! With @bilikikicruises @nikonaustralia @aquaticadigital #mynikonlife #mattysmithphoto @ Honiara, Solomon Islands
07.01.2022 Cheeky fur seal! These guys are amazing to swim with. As the boat pulled up to Montegue Island and couple of hundred seals awoke from their slumber in the morning sun. Scores of them excitedly slid down the wet sea kelp on their stomachs and swam out to meet us. I said to one guest, who is entertaining who here? Happy days! @paditv @nikonaustralia @aquaticadigital #mynikonlife #Z6 #mattysmithphoto
02.01.2022 Which picture do you prefer? Two photos of the same nudibranch, taken in the middle of the day no more than 10 seconds apart. Understanding your cameras settings and how to exploit them is your first step towards becoming a more creative photographer. If your New Years resolution is to improve your UW picture taking skills then I have good news for you! I’ve just uploaded another Intro to UW Photography weekend date on my website. It’s 22/23 Feb 2020, check the link for d...etails. 1:1 Private sessions also available. Happy New Year! https://www.mattysmithphoto.com/workshops/
