25.01.2022 Im wondering if I could make a request for the Heritage Stock Horse people? Ive been provided the opportunity to organise a Sharon May Davis Clinic in NSW, potentially for late October. She is especially keen to dissect more Heritage ASH, given her recent findings from other dissections of horses with Heritage/Waler bloodlines. She doesnt just dissect random horses, but has a strict code of ethics which means she will only dissect horses who were going to be PTS anyway. ... I was hoping to put the call out amongst the Heritage groups to see if there are any aged or injured HSH that their owners are facing the difficult decision to humanely euthanise and would like the opportunity to contribute to science and furthering the knowledge of the HSH by donating their HSH for dissection. Horse owners get free clinic attendance and materials. But, I think more importantly, they have the chance to contribute to scientific data that could be utilised to promote the HSH and further develop the breed. Im happy for anyone interested to send me a pm or ring me to discuss further Please and thank you Melinda

24.01.2022 Mind matters. Have you ever seen a horseman? I dont mean one who rides a horse in competition or demonstrations. He is unassuming. Humble. Not looking to i...mpress... and yet he does with the manner he works with his horses. With the way he can get them to do anything, with ease, and never a fluster. His horses dont bat an eyelid and jump the jump they have never seen with without hurry or question. Theres no carrots either as a reward. Just a quiet word or recognition, sometimes so soft no one else hears it. But its there, and his horse will do anything for him when its asked to do so, such is the connection. If you are like me, youve admired this trait and striven to forge this bond with your horse. Why is it we struggle when the horseman does not? We read everything on offer to improve, we obsess, we pay for technical lessons, we practice and have confidence lessons. We read and read and read. And we improve, eventually. Still, we wonder... why the horseman who has never had a lesson in his life has happier, more willing horses. Could it be that due to our continuing quest, our mind becomes like the train track pictured? We have our technical excellence, place your body here, press down slightly with your left seat bone, oh your leg is wobbling whys that again? Oh yes relax your calf and let your heel sink. Thats it, oh no my shoulders have tightened, my hands are all over the place and oh goddamit I havent anything for dinner whats it gonna be, chicken or pasta oh I need to get to the shops, I WISH hubby would put in sometimes and do the shopping! And on it goes. You realise that your horse has travelled crooked this whole time and nudge his shoulder back into place despairing that you will never improve. Your horse takes offence at the sudden shove and starts resisting. On a good day, you ask for something simple then call it quits but on a bad day you push the envelope and things can escalate quickly. Its easy to let our thoughts wander. Rarely, these days, do we have to concentrate on any one thing for more than a few moments. Our minds are filled with conflicting thoughts even when we are competent riders. Our undermining thoughts can be easily picked up by our horse. No wonder he does not have confidence in us when we have a constant dialogue in our brain telling us numerous things at once! Perhaps we are thinking about how to canter left or why our left shoulder keeps dropping... we know we have these things to work on but due to these thoughts our mind just doesnt shut up, and our horse is trying to numb out this constantly changing barrage. To our horse, our brain is like the right side. Even with our best intentions of being calm, being in the moment and leaving our stresses behind, they still surface. Our horse doesnt know what track to take. He doesnt know what thought to listen to, and because he becomes numb to cope, we have to use harsher aids to get through. The horseman shows his horse the picture on the left. Its so natural to the horseman to do this that hes never struggled. He guides his horse the way he knows. His horse follows him wherever the horseman leads, because in the horsemans mind, thats the only way. This clear picture and path gives the horse confidence. Two people have inspired this post. My beautiful mentor Carol Kernaghan, who can help you reduce your train tracks, and the late Neil Gaudion whom I think about every time I ride and marvel at his mastership. He will be unknown to many, but I hope you all know someone like him that inspires you. Simplify the track, your horse will thank you. Jodie Halton Equine Massage. Release the Potential.

23.01.2022 Quick Horsey Quiz... What is this? a) A mythical centaur hiding behind the float? b) Ziggy proving to Kay he hasnt got a beer gut? c) Ziggy desensitising himself to the float and confined spaces, or ... d) *insert your own joke here* (PS Many thanks to Dallas for making sure he could walk himself out, no Ziggys were harmed for the production of this quiz)

23.01.2022 My two yearlings, Elle and Ziggy. They like to sleep out the front of the house, in the sunshine. Relaxed little guys...

23.01.2022 Shared from Sharon May-Davis page https://authors.elsevier.com/a/1a8YM2dbxqV0ln Hi Folks,... Just letting you know that there are 50 free access days (from Nov 30) to a recent paper just published regarding the finding of a full nuchal ligament lamellae (NLL) in an unregistered Australian Stock Horse (ASH). A big thanks go to the University of New England, my co-authors and especially Bob Hunter, older brother and partner in crime for the many more publications to come regarding our findings on pre-domesticated horse bones in the USA and Europe. Just a little more to add re the ASHs I have dissected - the total is 12 and now 2/12 had a full NLL (C2-C7) - one more since publishing, 1/12 (C2-C6) and 9/12 (C2-C5) - BUT 4/12 exhibited ECVM!!!! Perhaps the heavy influence of Thoroughbreds in the bloodlines is the link to ECVM - what a pity. We surmise in the paper that the Waler is the ancestor with the complete NLL and hopefully, further research will help with this hypothesis. Enjoy Folks and safe journeys.

22.01.2022 This is how it is done

22.01.2022 Some of my lovely girls and boys

22.01.2022 An update on Kay, he is doing really well. Getting antibiotics twice daily, pain relief, and daily dressings including Manuka honey as recommended by Central West Equine. Diana the vet did a fantastic job on our urgent Sunday visit, and the wound looks relatively clean and healing nicely.

18.01.2022 Saving for later reading.

17.01.2022 This is a succinct and excellent explanation of why we should treat the cause. I love the last paragraph as it just starts to touch on "feel".

17.01.2022 Little transitions...accumulated over time....results in big transitions.

16.01.2022 Foals do like sleeping in funny positions... This one laid down and went to sleep while mum had a meal and a massage

15.01.2022 Danger mouse has one of these...

15.01.2022 I see so many want ads (ISO) from people who are searching for nice horses at bargain basement prices. A recent one is for a gentle Morgan with plenty of mileag...e safe enough for a child, in the 10-15 year old range, and they have a price limit of about $5,000. I assume that the horse needs to also be sound enough to pass a pre purchase exam. And this buyer may get lucky and find one, but I am guessing that they may also wait a long time, because if someone has a sound, gentle, child safe, trained registered Morgan, in that age range, there will be lots of people looking for the same horse, which will probably drive up the price well beyond $5,000. Now, if they would accept a horse that is closer to 20 years old, and one that may need a little bute now and again to stay sound, the five K becomes more realistic. The horse in this photo, back in 1968, cost me $800. But he was not an easy ride. You can find plenty of less expensive horses that have various issues, but when you want sound, quiet, trained, and easy enough for a less experienced rider, and also inexpensive, you had best be willing to spend lots of car miles looking at lots of horses, because there are not all that many of those at bargain prices. One very true saying about the steady Eddie gems is that they often sell within a barn, from one rider to another already waiting in the wings.

Lovely small, strong and friendly filly, but mum had some issues learning to breastfeed...seems to be all good now though with a little help from the lady doctor

10.01.2022 At the Meagan Harrison clinic in Sydney today, and it struck me how working with the horse changes you and allows you to grow, particularly in developing personality, assertiveness, self-confidence and ability to communicate. This then extrapolates back to your human relationships. Those (like myself) who have previously been in long term unhealthy relationships with poor and indirect communication, often lose the ability to ask for what they need and use non-linear methods ...to try to get it. Which means a whole lot of extra work running around the issue, and the ongoing effort of having to go further and further around to try and get it, cause you have to continue doing the roundabout things the way youve always done. Horses arent like that. They are direct and honest. They make a lot of people feel butt hurt because they dont put up with all this indirect not asking for something clearly rubbish. They make you work hard at the start of training to establish clear communication and boundaries. But once these are solid, the relationship that you build on that is amazing! My Dee is so forgiving with so much try. Im so proud of how far she has come from the scared and anxious, "dangerous" horse that I bought from the knackery. And Im so glad that learning this has helped me be better at my human relationships too. Im clearer in my communication, more direct and honest. Somewhere along the way in life I lost a lot of my old assertiveness and zest. Dee has given me so much back. Karl has benefited from this stuff too. And for that Im very grateful. See more

09.01.2022 Mavens Spiders from Mars aka Ziggy with some saddle training He was so cruisy. What a dude

08.01.2022 This is an Ira Glass quote about writing and creativity But it applies to anything and everything, including horse training. There is so much potential, but you know what you are really striving for, which is so much better...... Dont give up. Progress isnt flashy. Most cant see your work, and just think you are pfaffing about or dithering. They dont see the 5 minutes here and there spent on relationship and connection. The gentle asks and follow throughs that dont involve arguments and fights. The reinforcement of boundaries and development of mutual respect. The slow but steady progress, not to obedience, but a quiet comfortable and willing relationship. Silence the critics. Do the invisible work. Give it the time that it needs. And dont mind the gap.

08.01.2022 Tania Kindersley is so eloquent. Im always amazed at how well she can put such similar thoughts on horsemanship into words that make sense. Please have a read and remember, life is about being, not doing.

02.01.2022 MAVENS LIONHEART DOB 15/9/17 S - Attards Ironheart (Secretheart Stockhorses) D - Dangermouse... This gorgeous filly amazes me with her inquisitive nature and fearlessness. "Elles" a great little mover and put together nicely too. Im very happy with this breeding decision. Stoked with the outcome.

01.01.2022 This is an impressive finding with a potentially significant impact on the ASH and Heritage Stock Horse breed. Should information on extent of NLL or EVCM be collected by the stud book, along with 5panel testing? Should we also be talking these into consideration with our breeding choices? There is gathering evidence that the true Heritage ASH is NOT the same as the modern TB (despite old TB lines significant contributions to ancestry), and has older ancestry links that should be protected. What are the longer term implications for this breed? Can we preserve this characteristic in our blood lines? Open Disclosure My uncle is one of the co-authors and Sharon May-Davis brother.
