24.01.2022 A great Friday night with a couple of esteemed clinicians sharing their knowledge of private practice psychology here in Brisbane.

23.01.2022 Had the pleasure of lecturing the @uq_psych 3rd year students recently Shinning the spotlight on #educationalanddevelopmentalpsychology is a passion as I believe our skillset is just as valueable as other psychology disciplines, there just isn't that many of us I also spoke about my own journey from being an undergrad, postgrad and finally endorsed and working in the field ... I'll be putting the keep-cup to good use very soon Thanks! #edanddev #mavpsych #psychlife #psychology

23.01.2022 Happy #internationalwomensday

23.01.2022 A great infographic from Dr Bruce Perry and the team at Beacon House Therapeutic Services and Trauma Team All too often I hear parents report that when their child is upset they don't listen. This is because the child's mindset is in 'survival mode' (Think 3 Fs) and not conducive to listening or learning. To remedy this, help your child regulate their emotions (and yours) and once you can see their breathing return to normal work your way up ... #mavpsych #edanddev #psychology

23.01.2022 Proud to be an #educationalanddevelopmental psychologist

22.01.2022 Great advice from the team at #Livin - You dont need to have the answers Just show comfort and compassion #ruokday #mavpsych #edanddev

22.01.2022 As we unpack the first of many lunchboxes for 2020 its important to understand that each little human is a complex being that has been shaped by 6 million years of evolution. Even with all this refinement some will be better than others in maths, some will be sporting superstars, others will be amazing scientists and some will go on to produce the finest French patisseries money can buy. The moral? Encourage children to find what they are passionate about, get them to hold this tight and use this to build up their self-confidence to overcome the difficulties they will face...even if its climbing a tree #mavpsych #back2school #Einstein

21.01.2022 Some wise words from our friends over at Scope Clinical and Educational Services

20.01.2022 Big couple of days ahead with Selina working towards our psych supervisor accreditation with #benchmarkpsychology This will be the 2 out of the 3 boxes ticked before we can support psychologists with their training and add to the pool of #edanddev psychology supervisors #mavpsych #educationalanddevelopmentalpsychology

19.01.2022 Love this from #becomingunbusy Many of life's lessons are learned by little people though observation not direction The way we speak and interact with family, friends and others shapes little people's schemas; their intrinsic navigational GPS for relationships... As parents, we are vulnerable to letting our volcano explode I know I have but when this occurs don't dwell on the rupture, instead focus on the repair 1 Comfort your little person 2 Say you are sorry 3 Explain that you lost your cool 4 Tell them how you are going to try not to do it again Very rarely are all of life's lessons taught inside a classroom #mavpsych #edanddev #educationalanddevelopmentalpsychology

19.01.2022 Lucky to work with such amazing nurses each and everyday. Happy International Nurses Day

17.01.2022 A bit of time out of the clinic late last week wearing my other hat at the #CCTRND Research Symposium . We talked all things rare-neuro, developmental disability, #medicinalcannabis and rare disease global registrys . I presented some of the lessons we have learned running clinical trials out of the Centre for Clinical Trials in Rare-Neurodevelopmental Disorders #mavpsych #developmentalpsychology #clinicaltrials #childrenshealthqld

17.01.2022 Epic listen on the way into the office this morning from Taniela "Tongan Thor " Tupou and the #brochat180 crew about Nella's triumphs and tribulations Some of the key points I picked up: Even 140kg tokos built to dissect loose head and hooker binds can be impacted by their mental health Starting a discussion about your concerns is the first step in modifying them positively... Leaning on your support network doesn't make you weak, it makes you couragous Goosebumps listening to some of those stories, lucky that barber told you to pick up the phone #mavpsych #psychology #thefilth #mentalhealth #brothersrc #FRC Via Maroondam Images & MDI Framing

17.01.2022 And that's a wrap on 2020 To all the clients and their families that have trusted me to support them through an incredibly difficult year, I am truly humbled Looking forward to some downtime with friends and family before gearing up for another year doing what I love ... From the Maverick Psychology team Stay safe, Be Merry

16.01.2022 An amazing colleague is running a COS program soon, if you are keen to upskill your parenting play-book or know someone who may want to please give this a look. Cheers, MD

16.01.2022 I love this excerpt from Jay, he touches on 3 great points 1 Parenting is a partnership; 2 people sticking to the same game plan heading towards the same goals and working out the kinks along the way 2 Old school isn't always best; Parenting your children the same way your parents did you will not yield the same result. Children of today face distinctly different challenges than we did at the same age ... 3 'Provider' in every sense of the world, not just financial; It's difficult but as parents we must let our children make (scaffolded) mistakes and use these as learning opportunities. We won't always be there with our safety net #mavpsych #psychology #edanddev #parentingtips #dadlife

15.01.2022 This amazing psych is running an emotional marathon good luck Spilt Milk Psychology

15.01.2022 My thoughts on accessing psychological support during the COVID-19 pandemic and how the area of endorsement for your psychologist isnt the be-all and end-all.

13.01.2022 With the unprecented times we are all experiencing it would be silly to think our little ones cant feel that our world is changing Some may be able to express their worries and others may not If you want to open this diagloue with your little one this resource from the team and Mind Heart Kids and Manuela Molia Cruz is an excellent way to unpack the virus and some of the steps we can take to stop the spread #mavpsych #covid19 #childpsychology #caronavirus

13.01.2022 Last day in the clinic for 2019 and what a year it has been It has been my pleasure to support you and your loved ones through whatever struggles you have walked through the door with On behalf of Capt, The Hulk and myself have a very Merry Christmas and a safe and relaxing New Year. 10.01.2022 October 10th marks #worldmentalhealthday My tips for mental wellbeing are: 1 Stay on top of the basics - get a good nights sleep , eat well and exercise often 2 Make time for self care - 5 minutes and a cup of tea for a bit of mindfulness can really help see the sunshine through the clouds ... 3 Overcoming negative thoughts is a skill - like throwing the footy, the more you practice the better get so take time to squash that negative thought with a positive fact and repeat What are your tips on staying on top of your mental health? Let me know below #mavpsych #educationalanddevelopmentalpsychology #psychology #mentalhealth #worldmentalhealthday

10.01.2022 A long time coming but glad to see society changing the narrative around #Austim and #ASD

09.01.2022 #MaverickMondays The saying success is built on a foundation of failure rings true for many high achieving businesses, sports teams and athletes As parents we are innately wired to keep our children out of harms way and we tend to throw our cape on and scoop them up in the face of trouble and adversity... However, sometimes doing nothing and letting kids fail with our safety net there as back-up is the best way to produce repeatable, self-driven success We learn more from losses than victories, the trick is pinpointing what didn't work and thinking about how we can do it differently What have you learned from your failures

09.01.2022 Super proud to have contributed to the global Marigold study improving the lives of children and families with CDKL5 Deficiency Disorder #psychlife #cdkl5 #cdkl5deficiencydisorder https://www.marinuspharma.com//419-anaxolonechievesrimaryn

07.01.2022 October marks the start of #mentalhealthmonth During this time we make a concerted effort to raise awareness of the struggles of mental health and that its important to take time for your mental well-being How often do you hit the gym? How many times do you catch up with friends? Do you carve out some time each week to do something you enjoy and recharge that battery ... If not, there is no better time to start than now #mavpsych #edanddev #educationalanddevelopmentalpsychology #auspsychologicalsociety #mentalhealth

07.01.2022 With most parents adding teacher to their stay-at-home CV its important to understand that Danielles words are spot on As parents your focus should be ensuring the emotional well-being of your young person not their ability to do calculus Be present, acknowledge the situation, team up to make a plan and work out the kinks along the way ... After all, that is how we learn #mavpsych #psychology #covid19 #stayhome

07.01.2022 Wishing everyone an amazing #internationalwomensday Whether it be in the clinic, working at the hospital or at home, I am surrounded by strong women doing extraordinary things each and every day Thank-you for all that you all do ... #iwd2021 Via the amazing Kelly McMahon Design

06.01.2022 The COVID-19 virus has placed each and every one of us in a situation we have never faced before. While the health impact will be wide reaching, the stress and uncertainty about jobs and income will also have a significant impact. Believe me, you are not alone and everyone is facing these challenges. Don't be afraid to reach out for support during this time; it can be as easy as reading some dot points, chatting to a friend or practicing some mindfulness and meditation. 05.01.2022 #MaverickMondays One of my favourite sayings in the clinic is that a childs behaviour is the end result of 4,356* psycho-biological processes (*number may not be accurate) Like a speeding car, you cant go from 100km/h to 0km/h instantly So why do we tell children to Be Quiet when they are yelling or Stop It when they are being disruptive ... Instead, use this as a teaching opportunity Teaching what you say? #SelfRegulation 1 If you can identify whats underneath the surface and powering this behaviour Team-up with your little person to work out the best solution to their problem 2 If you cant identify whats the source of this behaviour Dont dispair! Instead comfort your child and when they begin to calm work together to identify the trigger and repeat step one 3 When you notice your little person begin to bubble away at the next issue remind them of their skills that they practised with you and like riding a bike, continue developing this skill! Remember one of the definitions of discipline is to teach and Co-regulation is the first step to self-regulation While it may be more labour intense, you are helping your little person attain the most valueable life skill they will need
