25.01.2022 The weather may have been grey but it was good paddling. There is no better way to spend a saturday morning. Today we concentrated on endurance and the brunch was well earnt and the sneaky pub visit an extra bonus. Mavericks welcomes all and we love the social aspect of paddling. ... Our next Meetup session is fully booked but doesn't mean we don't have space for you. If you fancy getting on board, drop up a message. We can't wait to hear from you. Just have a can do attitude and we'll help you with the rest. Paddles up!

24.01.2022 Maverick Monday In this time of Covid restrictions; what a good time to learn about our crew and what drew them to Dragonboating. #12 Orf / Chris... October 2014 My wife and I had been milling around the inner west for less than a year when I saw an ad in the Inner West Courier, Join us at Mavericks Dragon Boat Club we paddle hard and party harder! One free lesson later and we were straight down to Ray’s outdoors for gear. It was definitely a fit for us and exactly what we were looking for a chance to meet some locals, keep fit and have fun doing it. A matter of weeks later, with zero skills but a bundle of enthusiasm, we were at our first regatta. By the end of that day, I wondered what I had gotten myself into after six 500m races, I was absolutely shattered and a bit delirious, but the after-beers were sensational and there was a medal around my neck! That season, we went on to win medals at every single regatta we competed in and we were in them all! We medalled at states, we medalled at nationals, we won the DBNSW team of the year award and after half a year in the sport, I was part of a team who had earned a spot at the 2016 World Championships extraordinary. Apart from the paddling, there have been pool parties, comedic fund raisers, end of year booze ups, fancy dress at nationals, a 50th birthday with hot dogs and 60th birthday with a drag queen and fancy hats. Best of all, there was a sensational beach wedding between two magic people. I used to play a lot of other sport when I was younger - rugby, basketball, volleyball, triathlon, went through a golf phase as an older Orf too but haven't played in years now. Did a bit of hiking/trekking when I was living in Malaysia and when I first came back to Aus in 2012. I organised a Kilimanjaro climb with six other blokes in 2011 to raise money for some orphans in Livingstone, Zambia :-).
23.01.2022 Pop down to Bunnings at Alexandria today and support the Mavericks by enjoying a yummy sausage sizzle! #bunnings #sausagesizzle #alexandria

22.01.2022 Time for a Mavs social on the last Thursday before the start of Thursday night paddling. A lovely catch up with the paddling dragon family. A night at the Glenmore. Tomorrow another beginners session. Will we see more new faces at the next Social???
22.01.2022 Horrah! We got back on the water and Covid-19 safety was taken very seriously. First we sanitised our hands once we arrived. Our Covid Officer gathered us and read through what we could and more importantly couldn't do. Contact details were checked with each individual and social distancing observed. Paddling one to a row where possible to keep distance on the boat as much as is feasible; no sharing drink bottles and sanitiser kept on board for use when required.... Post session the boat was hosed down with water before being sanitised. Mavericks are in a fortunate position as many clubs are yet to return to the water.
21.01.2022 And finally... we have a ‘3-2-1 Mavericks’ on video! A great way to finish our awesome November open day!
21.01.2022 Another week and another bunch of new members receiving their club shirts and caps. It was a great day on the water with a full boat. There is no better way to start the weekend but to be on the water, followed by brunch with your new friends. If you fancy looking good in blue and purple and want to meet new friends while keeping fit, get in touch. There is a whole community of people waiting to welcome you.... Paddles up!
21.01.2022 Mavericks most recent beginners session saw the sun come out again and the club welcomed many new faces. Smiles all round and a nice little work out. Paddles up! If you fancy joining us to experience this amazing, all inclusive social sport and make friends while keeping fit then send us a message. ... We will always make room in the boat for you and we would love to share the experience of just what an amazing sport this is. Why wouldn't you want to get involved?
21.01.2022 Our newbies enjoying their morning paddle
21.01.2022 The beginners look like naturals. Great to have new people in the boat and awesome pod work.
21.01.2022 Sound like you? Come and join us.
20.01.2022 Maverick Monday Who are we and why do we paddle? #15 Pam... I've always enjoyed being part of a sports team. Growing up, I played netball and captain's ball. There's something about training, working towards a common goal, and laughing together that no amount of money can buy. Moving to Sydney from Singapore in 2014 felt like a blank canvas - an opportunity to work in a different environment, meet different people and pick up a different sport. Was walking across the ANZAC bridge one evening when I noticed people paddling at Bank Street. Did some research and was quickly curious about the Mavericks because they've been around for over 20 years, have a diverse group of paddlers and had costume parties! Sold! I was immediately drawn to dragon boating after the first practice despite being rather ungraceful in the boat for as long as I can remember. The push to perfect a stroke in unison, commitment to each set and release of energy you didn't know you had when the coach yells "Mavericks, take it home!!!" felt like a rollercoaster ride. Of course the pain the next day in muscles you never knew existed serve as a reminder of the hardwork (or bad technique) put in. Four seasons later, I've paddled in different rows in the boat (apart from rows 6&7 ...too short), participated in regattas, drummed and celebrated with the Mavericks through highs and lows. I've also learnt so much from Mavericks past and present and continue to learn. The camaraderie and friendships developed from training and social outings cannot be understated and truly makes dragon boating a one of-a-kind sport. I look forward to being back in the boat with old and new faces next season!
20.01.2022 Another great day on the water. We welcomed back 7 people that had their first taster of Dragonboating at our meetup last weekend. The water was calm and we did some great sets including race starts and a race; the ultimate goal of our training sessions being development of our race team. We also paddled over 11km which certainly works off those calories, making the brunch at the local cafe worthwhile. There is still plenty of room in the boat so please get in contact if you'd like to join us and try something new. It's an amazing way to enjoy the water.
19.01.2022 Thanks to DBNSW having recently lifted Covid restrictions on clubs joining together in order to help clubs get on the water, the Mavericks joined up for the first of our Tuesday night sessions with Dragons Abreast. Plenty of smiles on those faces and a great way for members to make new contacts and friends within the Dragonboat community. The club doesn't just paddle on a Saturday morning, so if after work is more your buzz for exercise and an evening on the water then get in touch. Our club is growing fast but there is always a space in the boat for you.
19.01.2022 Who are we and why do we dragonboat? Maverick Monday #13 Diana... I first heard about dragon boating at a friend's birthday dinner - her friend is part of CYL and she was enthusiastically telling me about the sport after I commented on her super toned arms. A few years later in 2019, I had a new years resolution to try out some new hobbies so I was looking at Meetup events and found one for dragon boating with the Mavs! The first session was a lot of fun but I was in so much pain afterwards, I had to take Panadol to sleep that night! But I went back again the following week and it was just as fun and it didn't hurt as much this time. So I signed up! It's awesome being on the water. I love the friendliness and banter in the boat. I love the team spirit, being part of a team, the awesome coaches, the great workout and challenging myself to improve my endurance and technique each week. It's been wonderful making new friends in the boat and over brunch each Saturday morning. We come from all walks of life, but share a common love and passion for paddling, and there's a warmth and friendliness which is really special. It's not always easy to wake up early on Saturdays for training but I'm always excited to see my teammates and the chicken schnitty after training is also a great motivator! Outside of dragon boating I love painting and pub trivia.
19.01.2022 The need to paddle is strong and when you have a bunch of people round you that love it as much as you there is no stopping us. Come and spend a sunset evening of paddling with new friends. Hopefully the bushfires will stop soon.
19.01.2022 It's a little late due to the Covid restrictions in place before Christmas but Sunday the Mavs finally got to celebrate their Christmas get together. Those that play together stay together. The weather could have been better but it remained dry and with a bit of OC1 paddling, horse shoe throwing, twister and Kris Kringle our club members were able to get to know each other a bit more off the boat.... Great to see smiles all round.
18.01.2022 New year resolutions? 1. Going to get more active = Dragonboating with Mavericks 2. Try something new = Dragonboating with Mavericks... 3. 16.01.2022 Wow, what an amazing beginners meetup session last saturday (18th January 2020). One sweep, one stroke, a coach and 19 newbies getting their first taste of the biggest and fastest growing mixed team watersport in the world; Dragonboating! We hope we'll see many of those faces back to join us in a normal training session. If you missed out this time keep an eye out for February's tryout session. The first three sessions are free so what have you got to lose; apart from several hundred calories?

15.01.2022 We love welcoming new members to this fantastic sport and amazing dragonboat community. Yesterday saw us give the first shirt and cap presentation of 2021 to our newest club member. 14.01.2022 Maverick Monday Who are we and why do we paddle? #16 Francisco (Disco)... I had grown up in the US playing baseball throughout high school and University, but life got in the way of team sports when I hit my late 20s and 30s. In late 2018, my wife and I were looking for browsing Meetup Groups for new activities, and we found the Mavericks -- a free lesson on the water? Why the heck not? So we signed up to give it a shot. One lesson in, I was hooked! I quickly realized that Dragon Boating would be a great way to keep fit, have fun, and scratch that competitive itch, with races and regattas. As a bonus, everyone was AWESOME. My favorite aspect of being a Maverick is the sense of community and comradery. Even as a newbie, everybody was encouraging and helpful. You could say I lacked a certain amount of ... finesse in the boat. The sense of accomplishment when you start seeing the gains is invigorating. Aside from that, the crew is awesome and enjoys the social side of it as well - holiday lawn bowls, fundraising BBQs, dinners, and drinks after a long day of racing. Even in these challenging times where we can't see as much of each other as we'd like, I'm proud to be a Mav and looking forward to jumping back in the boat.
14.01.2022 Sadly our Halloween costume paddle has had to be cancelled due to a severe weather warning. The Safety of our paddlers is paramount. Don't let those costumes go to waste though!
14.01.2022 Another successful newbies open day! Thanks Pam for organising and everyone else for making it a fun day! We hope to see you all back soon
12.01.2022 Maverick Monday In this time of isolation and lockdown; what a good time to learn about our crew and what drew them to Dragonboating. #7 Jon... Commonly known as JK or Karas. I was born and raised in Melbourne, left Oz when I was 16 to move to Athens (2 years), followed by an amazing 16 years in England, 3 Years in Hong Kong and as of 2019, finally back in Australia! I picked up paddling in 2016 in Hong Kong. I knew nothing about the sport however being part of a dragon boat team seemed like a right of passage so I joined a team called the Seagods. Why I enjoy it? Power calls! And of course the great people you meet and the feeling of being out on the water (Planning on taking up OC at the first opportunity that arises). What I have gained from dragon boating. Great friends, improved fitness, excellent adventures and nasty hangovers. I joined the Mavs thanks to a google search and the name jumped out at me. After coming down for a paddle I knew I found my new team and I can’t wait until we are up and running again. Some interesting facts about me. I have travelled to 82 countries and counting, Have sampled over 3000 beers in my travels. I also play football (soccer) as a goalie and in my spare time you will either find me hiking, paddleboarding, DJing, cooking, walking my dog or kicking back in one of the breweries in the inner west. Favourite place in the world, I couldn’t separate them so I am going to say Palawan (Philippine’s) and Palau.
11.01.2022 Maverick Monday This week's bio is a tribute. LYNN ... With a heavy heart we announce the passing away of our beloved friend, mentor and member Ms Lynn Pearce on 27 Aug 2020. Lynn has been a Maverick since November 2007. Over the years she has held various roles at the club - Communications officer, Head of recruitment, President, Treasurer. She has been an avid paddler enjoying her time on the water as much as off it. In spite of not being on the boat the last few seasons, she has joined the team for breakfast post paddling and shared stories of her travels across the world. She has now embarked on this journey beyond the skies and we hope she continues to watch upon us. Mavericks had a special place in her life and she in our hearts. Paddles up!
11.01.2022 Who are we and why do we paddle? Maverick Monday #11 Tam... I started paddling 10 years ago, after hula-hooping for a while and wanting to join a team sport that involved being on the water. I was initially drawn to Mavs because of the blue and purple but I also liked the idea of being a Maverick. Once in the team, the camaraderie was great with people wanting to have fun but with a competitive streak. I have been lucky enough to paddle/sweep/drum with the Mavericks at Nationals all over Australia as well as representing NSW at state level. I’ve also taken the odd opportunity to paddle overseas in Hong Kong and Borneo. Coaching is another role I have done for several years and enjoy seeing people learn, build confidence and get it (I just wish more could count to 10 ). I love being a Mav because they’re a funky group of people, happy to have a laugh, work hard when they have to but also muck around. I also love the meditative aspect of paddling, focusing on technique, counting strokes and improving little tweaks here and there there’s no time to think of anything else and a great de-tune from the day. I was a professional hula-hooper and still hula-hoop down in the park most days. In these iso-days, I have rediscovered a love for knitting, currently working on a lacy-petunia scarf.it’s very pretty
11.01.2022 Introducing our newly qualified Sweeps. The most important person on the boat. There are plenty of opportunities on board to get involved in this amazing sport. If you don't feel paddling is right for you but you still want to join the dragonboating community there are plenty of other roles. We can offer sweep training, coaching opportunities or even committee and administrative roles. ... If you fancy getting involved and being part of this amazing sport get in touch. There is always room for you and you will be warmly welcomed.
10.01.2022 How good is it to be out on the water on a beautiful Saturday morning? This good!
10.01.2022 So lovely to welcome our beginners back after last weeks bad weather. We love helping people discover this amazing inclusive mixed sport. We can already see the improvement and hope they continue to enjoy the adventure. Everyone starts somewhere. Will next week be your first time? Message us if you are interested in joining.
10.01.2022 Maverick Monday Who are we and why do we paddle? #14 Bernie... I started my dragon boat paddling journey when I was asked to be a surrogate mum in a boat race for my friend Gails daughter. It was great fun but I really had no idea what I was doing. I know I was so out of time and just getting soaking wet. So I decided to find a club to give it a go. I joined DSA in 2007 and finally got better at paddling and trying to keep in time. Our coach George was a very good coach and didn’t take any nonsense when in the boat. I stayed with DSA for 3 years and then moved on to the Mavs. There were lots of friendly people willing to help out and welcome you to the club. I have competed in lots of regattas and represented at states a couple of times winning gold such a fantastic feeling. The fun thing about the dragon boat community you become friends with lots of new people of all different nationalities, ages and all different walks of life. I have played lots of sport over the years softball, ice hockey, and field hockey. I love the Mavs spirit we can still have a laugh in the boat but when it comes to racing, it’s all focus. When you are at the start line of a race our aim is to leave all other boats in our wake. Most of my time is now spent looking after my beautiful grandchildren but this year I am hoping to get to more sessions. I am really looking forward to getting back into the boat and enjoying the fun and company of the Mighty Mavericks.
10.01.2022 Mavericks fundraising sausage sizzle. If you are near Tempe pop down to Decathlon for a true Aussie experience and help the mavs raise some club funds. Today until they run out!
10.01.2022 Dragonboating is a fantastic way to keep fit. Endurance and HIIT; not to mention taking in the scenery of Blackwattle Bay. Training saturday 8.15am to 10.30am Tuesday and Thursday night training 6.15pm to 8.30pm... Come give us a go. What's there to lose apart from several hundred calories?

In it together; we will return stronger. There is a place in the boat for you.
09.01.2022 Sadly, due to Covid-19 the Dragonboat season has come to a premature end. We will be back as soon as possible and we hope you will join us for some much needed freedom on the water. Stay safe and watch out for your team mate; whomever they may be.

06.01.2022 It's not all about paddling. So maybe the physicality of Dragonboating doesn't interest you? You can learn to be a sweep instead. The person in charge; the big boss; the one that ensures the safety of the crew and steers the boat. Without a sweep the boat can't go out. It is the most critical position on the boat. The person who has the last word. Mavericks can offer you the opportunity to learn to sweep. We are always looking to train new sweeps and welcome you into t...he club. Enjoy the best view on the boat with none of the effort. Sounds interesting? Then get in touch.

05.01.2022 One advantage of a watersport is that it doesn't matter when it rains! While the weather was wet it was a day of celebration. Another cap presentation to a new Maverick along with 50km distance awards.
04.01.2022 Dear Maverick friends and followers: WE NEED YOUR HELP!!! The Sloths Dragon Boating Club and Mavericks Dragonboat Racing Club both store single crafts (outrigger canoes) at Multihull Marina in Annandale to be used by club members. The clubs' ability to use the Marina facilities allows members to train on single crafts for State, National and International competitions. ... It also allows members to engage in physical exercise whilst maintaining social distancing during COVID-19, which is important for physical and mental wellbeing. However, we have been threatened to have this area forcibly removed from us in the name of development and we need your help to stop it happening. Please sign the petition and share with other friends of #watersports and #dragonboating and help us keep our storage facility and keep our members on the water. https://www.change.org/KeepMultihullMarina
