25.01.2022 The $100 Dollar Man 2013 marked the centenary of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, led by Douglas Mawson, Australia's greatest Antarctic explorer. The extraordinary tale of his survival on that epic odyssey, and his groundbreaking work as a scientist, led to Mawson's selection as the figure on the front of Australia's first $100 banknote. Douglas Mawson's first trip to Antarctica was in 1907 when he joined the British Antarctic Expedition led by Ernest Shackleton. As a m...Continue reading

12.01.2022 Almost time to get those camera's out

12.01.2022 In his book The Home of the Blizzard, Mawson talked of "Herculean gusts" on 24 May 1912 which he learned afterwards "approached two hundred miles per hour". Mawson reported that the average wind speed for March was 49 miles per hour; for April, 51.5 miles per hour; and for May, 67.719 miles per hour. These katabatic winds can reach around 300 km/h (190 mph) and led Mawson to dub Cape Denison "the windiest place on Earth"

10.01.2022 The air-tractor sledge was a converted fixed-wing aircraft taken on the 19111914 Australasian Antarctic Expedition, the first plane to be taken to the Antarctic. The air-tractor sledge in 1912 Expedition leader Douglas Mawson had planned to use the Vickers R.E.P. Type Monoplane as a reconnaissance and search and rescue tool, and to assist in publicity, but the aircraft crashed heavily during a test flight in Adelaide, only two months before Mawson's scheduled departure date.... The plane was nevertheless sent south with the expedition, after having been stripped of its wings and metal sheathing from the fuselage. Engineer Frank Bickerton spent most of the 1912 winter working to convert it to a sledge, fashioning brakes from a pair of geological drills and a steering system from the plane's landing gear. It was first tested on 15 November 1912, and subsequently assisted in laying depots for the summer sledging parties, but its use during the expedition was minimal. Towing a train of four sledges, the air-tractor accompanied a party led by Bickerton to explore the area to the west of the expedition's base at Cape Denison. The freezing conditions resulted in the jamming of the engine's pistons after just 10 miles (16 km), and the air-tractor was left behind. Some time later it was dragged back to Cape Denison, and its frame was left on the ice when the expedition returned home in 1913. In 2008, a team from the Mawson's Huts Foundation began searching for the remains of the air-tractor sledge; a seat was found in 2009, and fragments of the tail assembly a year later. The Mawson's Huts Foundation has undertaken extensive investigation using sophisticated equipment in 2009 and 2010. Results indicate that the air tractor, or parts of it, is still buried under three metres (10 ft) of ice where it was abandoned at Cape Denison. The tail fragments are currently on display at our replica museum in Hobart, Tasmania. Donations are welcome, and tax deductible. Contact us for details.

04.01.2022 Antarctic History is our History Mawson, when embarking on his 1911-14 expedition was determined to make a difference. His mission was scientific in nature, and although he is probably more famous for his 42% land claim of the Antarctic, it was these scientific discoveries which made his expedition unique. Many of Mawsons observations and discoveries play an important role in today’s climate and Southern Ocean research. Additionally he was the first to use wireless in the An...tarctic, via a relay station at Macquarie Island. This allowed expeditioners to make contact with their home base for the first time ever. Mawson was the first to discover many rare minerals including gold on the continent. His finds were meticulously documented, and found in a large collection of reports such as the one pictured. Exploration was not all about the glory. Our thirst for knowledge and understanding of our planet was a key driver for Mawson and others who followed in his wake. Out foundation follows this work, and preserves this legacy.

03.01.2022 Chimu Adventures are wonderful supporters of the Mawson's Huts Foundation and we congratulate them on this wonderful achievement, celebrating 15 years.

03.01.2022 Entries to the 2020 FHPAs are now open!

02.01.2022 Who was Sir Douglas Mawson? Mawson was born in England and came to Australia as an infant. He completed degrees in mining engineering and geology at the University of Sydney. In 1905 he was made a lecturer in petrology and mineralogy at the University of Adelaide. Mawson's first experience in the Antarctic came as a member of Shackleton's Nimrod Expedition (19071909), alongside his mentor Edgeworth David. They were part of the expedition's northern party, which became the f...irst to attain the South Magnetic Pole and to climb Mount Erebus. After his participation in Shackleton's expedition, Mawson became the principal instigator of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (19111914). The expedition explored thousands of kilometres of previously unexplored regions, collected geological and botanical samples, and made important scientific observations. Mawson was the sole survivor of the three-man Far Eastern Party, which travelled across the Mertz and Ninnis Glaciers named after his two deceased companions. Their deaths forced him to travel alone for over a month to return to the expedition's main base. Mawson was knighted in 1914 and during World War I worked with the British and Russian militaries. He returned to the University of Adelaide in 1919 and became a full professor in 1921, contributing much to Australian geology. He returned to the Antarctic as the leader of the British Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (19291931), which led to a territorial claim in the form of the Australian Antarctic Territory. Mawson is commemorated by numerous landmarks and from 1984 to 1996 appeared on the Australian $100 note.
