25.01.2022 Light & Shadow Fine Art Gallery Artist Image: Gammon Ranges, South Australia by Ian Brown "The gnarled landscapes of Australias desert mountains offer a dramatic contrast to the moist mountains of the east coast and Great Dividing Range. Relics of ancient geologic upheavals, the mountains are just worn-down stubs now, but bare of forest they expose the oxidised bones of the land. Without much weather to add visual interest, I planned this image for after the sun went down and warm, soft alpenglow burnished the ochre tones. The distant peak is one of the highest in the range." 24.01.2022 Light and Shadow Fine Art Gallery Artist image: Chestnuts & Snow, Barite, Victoria by Richard White "Up the road from my place whenever it snows I always go for a look see for there as a rule is something always on offer. This particular day was no different. I saw the trees on someones property and made the image. The white-out behind the trees was a bonus as there were no distracting hills or other trees to detract from the subject matter. A couple of years later one tree had been removed, a lovely wire fence had been constructed just in front of the other tree and a nice new gravel driveway had been laid next to the fence. None of these new elements inspired me to make another image." For more of Richards creativity please go to his webpage https://www.lightandshadowgallery.com.au/richard-white/

23.01.2022 Light and Shadow Fine Art Gallery Artist image: Junction Falls - After (Blue Mountains, Australia) "I had almost given up capturing Junction Falls in full flow during an afternoon storm as nothing was happening. Starting to pack up, I suddenly heard, then saw, the water over the falls increase dramatically. And quickly. So much water began flowing it created its own wind. I only had seconds to capture the change and the sunlight that suddenly pierced through the clouds, and over the falls onto the rocks. Just after this shot, the log stuck in the falls disappeared completely from view. This photograph was the Winner in the Monochrome Prize in the 2018 Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year Award." 22.01.2022 Light and Shadow Fine Art Gallery Artist image: Reeds, Myall Lakes by Ian Brown "This image is from the same beatific evening as Boolambayte paperbarks. I was attracted to the subtle bands of light around the reeds, created by the slow rippling water." For more of Ians images, please visit his webpage at https://www.lightandshadowgallery.com.au/ian-brown-2/

22.01.2022 Light and Shadow Fine Art Gallery Artist image: Leura Falls Creek (Blue Mountains, Australia) by Peter Hill "A foggy, wet, and still early morning can give a Jurassic feel to much of the rainforested Blue Mountains and a strong desire to capture that mood. This photograph was Runner-up in the Monochrome Prize in the 2016 Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year Award." 21.01.2022 Light & Shadow Fine Art Gallery Artist image: Black Sand Flat by Timothy Moon. "An early start and short drive along the ring road of Iceland found the dramatic sunrise landscape expected at Stocksness, shrouded in fog with a stormy cloud filled sky. Rather than wasting the early start, and being greeted by low tide I chose to walk through the dunes of the tidal sand flat. The black sand was coarse with low lying water providing a sheen that reflected the light of the dramatic sky above. Despite a lengthy wait, the shroud of Vestrahorn did not lift. The hidden landscape would be revealed on a future visit. The image received a second placing in the Landscape Category of the annual Focus Photographers Awards." 21.01.2022 Light & Shadow Fine Art Gallery Artist image: Rock Eye by Peter Damo. As a photographer you see many things which escape the eye of the average person. Its not that the world is invisible to others, rather that the elements that comprise it are either isolated or included to create an artistic interpretation. For more of Peters interesting Elemental Fantasy series, go to his webpage at https://www.lightandshadowgallery.com.au/peter-damo/

20.01.2022 Light & Shadow Fine Art Gallery Artists image: Misty Clouds, Machharpuchhre, Nepal by Richard White "In 2006 I was leading a small group to Nepal to do the Annapurna Sanctuary trek. The mountains came and went as the thick cloud moved through. Towards the end of the day the light and clouds became more consistent and photographs were more plentyful". 20.01.2022 Light & Shadow Fine Art Gallery Artist image: Fiordland skyline, New Zealand by Ian Brown "Fiordland is perhaps the most powerful landscape I have experienced. I love it so much that Ive spent many months of my life climbing and walking there. The daunting weather, the huge and vast topography, the steepness, the tumbling rivers, waterfalls, alpine lakes, primeval rainforest and gorgeous alpine growth meld into a marvel. When the weather stops, the evenings can be crystalline. This scene is just near the highest peaks of the Hunter Mountains, two days walk from the road." 18.01.2022 Light & Shadow Fine Art Gallery Artist image: Bike Rider by Olga Baldock. "It was an amazing morning on a beach not far from Stockton Sand Dunes at Port Stephens. The light was superb as it tried to break through, leaving beautiful reflections in the wet areas of the sand. Suddenly the bike rider and his dog appeared into the picture. With bated breath I took a number of frames following him as he rode towards me. The panorama style of the image enhances the mood as it takes into play all the weather conditions." 18.01.2022 Light & Shadow Fine Art Gallery Artist image: Dancing Mountain Ash by Richard White "In 2006 after fires had swept through parts of Mt Buffalo I was scheduled to conduct a workshop in those areas. I had been told many times that there would be nothing to photograph under these circumstances. I didnt belief it for a minute, for I knew from experience if fog arrived on our doorstep, combined with charred trunks, then imagery would be forthcoming." For more of Richards images, go to https://www.lightandshadowgallery.com.au/richard-white/

17.01.2022 Light and Shadow Fine Art Gallery Artist image: Jurassic by Peter Hadjimichael. "This image appeared to me on a piece of discarded sheet metal left to weather in a suburban back yard. The shapes within, somehow evoke the pre-historic to me. I take great pleasure in discovering hidden worlds amongst the unremarkable." For more of Peters work, go to https://www.lightandshadowgallery.com.au/peter-hadjimichae/

15.01.2022 Light and Shadow Fine Art Gallery Artist image: Stone fish by Peter Hadjimichael. "This photograph immediately suggested the aquatic to me. It is a collection of pebbles transported to this arrangement by flowing water in times of heavy rain. Its fishlike outline and ochre tones echo the ancient petroglyphs of indigenous Australians. This image was made on a large rock platform, near the township of Linden. Many signs of pre-European habitation may be found in this area." For more of Peters work, go to his webpage https://www.lightandshadowgallery.com.au/peter-hadjimichae/

15.01.2022 Light and Shadow Fine Art Gallery Artists image: Canyon sunbeams, Blue Mountains National Park by Ian Brown. "Sandstone canyons in the Blue Mountains are similar formations to the more photographically famous slots of Colorado, but the moister climate means the walls are draped with ferns and coated in algae, moss and lichens. Sunlight focused through the narrow slot from above moves quickly, and sometimes creates beams of light if there is enough water vapour in the air." 13.01.2022 Light & Shadow Fine Art Gallery Artist Image: After the Bush fires, Bombo by Olga Baldock "I woke up early one morning to find the sun yellowish and red in colour and Bombo headland covered in a smoke haze from the bushfires. To enable me to present this image differently, I slightly blurred the bottom of the subject to create a water colour effect with a touch of romantic abstraction. When I was working on the photograph I had William Turner in mind who is known as the painter of light, and a leader of Romanticism heading towards abstraction and setting the stage for Impressionism." For more of Olgas work go to her webpage at https://www.lightandshadowgallery.com.au/olga-baldock/

13.01.2022 Light & Shadow Fine Art Gallery Artists Image: Morning light by Peter Hadjimichael. "In this more traditional image, I feel I have captured that feeling of freshness and optimism one feels when the morning sun breaks through the mist, after a period of rain. The soft light and gentle colours add to the sense of romanticism. Living in the Blue Mountains allows me to quickly immerse myself in the landscape as the opportunity arises." For more of Peters images go to his webpage at https://www.lightandshadowgallery.com.au/peter-hadjimichae/

11.01.2022 Hello to all Max Dupain friends, thought Id share a sales experience with you that Im sure you would understand. I sold a beautiful 75cm print of "Morning mist envelops the Sydney Harbour Bridge last week. The print, based on a very touched up and refined file of the scanned negative, was delivered and the client quickly rejected it because it wasnt "perfect". She got up very close to analyse it and found some subtle blemishes in the sky/mist area (where any blemishes will ...stand out) and couldnt be convinced that this is normal for scans of 70 year old negatives, and perhaps part of the charm of very old images. The subtle blemishes were not noticeable from a metre away and previous clients had been very happy with it. I also pointed out that all of Maxs prints when enlarged to this size should not be viewed up close but at least 1 metre away, or more. Unlike digital based images, these enlarged fine art prints will be pixellated if you get too close. So if you ever purchase a MD print, dont expect perfection - however you define that (what is perfection?). I had the larger version of this print in my Light & Shadow Fine Art Gallery and no one ever complained that it wasnt "perfect". What do you think? Should images taken 70-90 years ago be as smooth and perfect as yesterdayss images? See more

10.01.2022 Light and Shadow Fine Art Gallery Artist image: Waratah by Peter Hadjimichael. "This image was made in Blue Gum Swamp, a much-visited area near my Springwood home. Over a six-week period in spring, waratahs stand like beacons among the tall gum trees, adding the finishing touch to a very beautiful area. A particularly windy morning resulted in this image of a waratah in motion." For more of Peters interesting images, go to his webpage at https://www.lightandshadowgallery.com.au/peter-hadjimichae/

09.01.2022 Light and Shadow Fine Art Gallery Artist image: Upper Hunter by Olga Baldock "Flying in a helicopter in the early morning light over Torryburn in the Upper Hunter, my main focus was to shoot as much as I could. Hills, trees, light and patterns paraded themselves from a different perspective. The light, subject, perspective and colour create a mood that draws the viewer into the scene. Changing the colour from the vibrant greens is the need in me to seek something different. The vibrant greens, I believe, took away from the subject the little tree nestled in the hills." For more of Olgas beautiful images go to her webpage at https://www.lightandshadowgallery.com.au/olga-baldock/

09.01.2022 I thought I would share a lovely, warm image of Max made by the wonderfully talented Aust photographer Heidi Smith. Taken at his studio in 1985 , please copy and paste the following link https://www.facebook.com/photo.php

08.01.2022 Light and Shadow Fine Art Gallery Artist image: Pumphouse Point "We headed out before dawn aiming to capture the soft morning light on Lake St Clair in Tasmania, but were greeted with a heavy damp fog. Pressing on we walked to our chosen location with condensation gradually covering our camera gear and tripods. The cold morning damp was chilling to the bone. Sunrise ended up a non event as the cloud cover was thick, and the promised colour had no chance to develop. As we pack...ed up, the fog started to lift, but rather than clearing, the cover provided a narrow corridor for the morning light to skim the surface of the lake. The light was quite theatrical, providing a strong sidelight to feature the old pump house in the residual misty gloom." 06.01.2022 Light & Shadow Fine Art Gallery Artist images: Crocus by Olga Baldock "Mount Wilson in Spring allows for many photographic opportunities. Kneeling down I put my camera as close to the ground as possible and took a multiple exposure, at 85mm, f/1.4. Movement, colour, light and photographing the subject differently created the atmosphere. I wanted to involve the viewer in seeing the story standing tall and united in shadows that surround us." 05.01.2022 Light and Shadow Fine Art Gallery Artist image: Coogee Pool Swim by Olga Baldock "The position of the pool allowed it to be photographed from the path looking down. This view allowed me to capture a relationship between the three people in the image. The child holding on tightly to the father due to the waves crashing over the side of the pool and the third person walking out of the frame. A slow shutter speed, colour and light invites the viewer to become involved in the mood of this visual story." 05.01.2022 Light and Shadow Fine Art Gallery Artist image: Jetty, Croajingalong National Park, Victoria by Richard White "In far eastern Victoria I was scouting locations for pictures when I cam across this scene on a rather dismal day. The contrasting jetty with the rest of the scene made me see the possibility of a strong picture. It also shows the limitation of man in some ways. building, reaching out, yet nature is always there ready to take back what has been taken from her. But as a photograph it has strong contrast that I always look for when photographing in black and white." For more of Richards work, please go to his webpage at https://www.lightandshadowgallery.com.au/richard-white/

03.01.2022 With so many photographers obsessed with technology and technicalities, heres a nice reminder from the great master himself of the importance of feeling for, and conveyed by, the subject: Ive always believed that a great photographer should concentrate more on depth of feeling and less on depth of field. Max Dupain, 1980s
