25.01.2022 Are we facing the end of the world? A couple of Franciscans share their thoughts.
25.01.2022 Archbishop Anthony Fisher's fantastic homily for Fathers Day is a must-read for any dad. Check it out! Perhaps the most famous father in recent pop culture is Homer Simpson. Since 1989 he has starred in most of the 684 episodes and 31 series so far of the animated sitcom The Simpsons. Although he is lovable, funny and devoted to his kids, hes often ignorant and boorish, drools over women and food, abuses his neighbours, skips church and is a poor role-model. His catch-cry D...Continue reading

21.01.2022 Their martyrdom for a new faith caused the Christian sun to rise in Korea Catholicism was not originally brought to the isolated Korean Peninsula by celibate missionaries who trekked over its remote borders or who landed on its far shores from the outside. Instead, native Korean intellectuals had heard interesting ideas and had read intriguing books imported from nearby China about a new faith. These diplomats, professors and poets went in search of the Church. They crossed t...Continue reading

19.01.2022 "Pray, hope, and don't worry. Worry is useless." Let us especially remember that in the Christian life, worry is useless. Have a blessed Feast of St Pio of Pietrelcina!
19.01.2022 THE SIEGE OF VIENNA AND THE HOLY NAME OF MARY In 1683, the forces of the Holy League, under Polands King Jan Sobieski, roundly defeated the Mohammedan invaders at the Battle of Vienna. Here is a brief telling of that triumphant occasion by Gary Potter (in Saint Mary of Victory The Historical Role of Our Lady in the Armed Defense of the Faith): Fortuitously, the pope of the day, Innocent XI, had just brokered an alliance between the Holy Roman Empire and the Kingdom of Po...Continue reading

17.01.2022 An early bishop martyr is honored due to an enduring miracle of blood In every lost corner and hidden valley of the Catholic world is a painting of the Virgin Mary that cries watery tears, a crucifix whose growing hair must be cut with scissors, a white host oozing drops of red blood, or a sacred pool whose baths make the blind see and the lame walk. Of all the miracles, wonders, and theological rarities that leave Gods family in awe, the miracle of todays saint is one of t...Continue reading

15.01.2022 In 1615, the Tokugawa Shogunate prohibited Christianity throughout Japan and ordered all missionaries to leave the country. Some stayed, went into hiding, and continued to minister covertly to the Christians of Japan. In 1622, 56 missionaries and the lay people who had assisted them were publicly executed for their faith. Today we remember them, and pray that should we face the same persecution, we would - by grace - demonstrate the same heroic courage.

13.01.2022 Brothers, due to a technical issue our conversation with Daniel Ang will now be streamed Friday week - the 25th of September at 4 pm on this page. Our sincerest apologies!
13.01.2022 Did you know that the church teaches that every Friday of the year is penitential and we should observe some kind of mortification or penance? It mostly has to do with the fact that the Church, emphasises the maturity of each person and therefore lets Her children decide how to live their Faith. On most Fridays of the year, the Church offers recommendations and asks us to choose how to do penance. In other words, the Church continues to ask us to engage in penance every Frid...ay of the year. The Catechism of the Catholic Church (1438) states: The seasons and days of penance in the course of the Liturgical year (Lent and every Friday in memory of the death of our Lord Jesus Christ), are intense moments of the penitential practice of the Church . So what other practices are recommended on the rest of the Fridays of the year to obey the Churchs penitential call? The Catechism mentions that these days are particularly appropriate for spiritual exercises, penitential liturgies and pilgrimages. But the Church also calls for voluntary self-denial such as fasting and alms giving, and of course, works of charity and missionary work. Someone will ask if that penance responds to the commemoration of the death of Our Lord Jesus Christ on Good Friday and we can say that a large part is due to it. However, we must also remember that the importance of our penance is related to our sinful nature. We know that we have sinned and we continue to fall into sin. For this reason and recognising that we have to ask for forgiveness and discipline our bodies with penance, the Church guides us and teaches us to be better Christians. 10.01.2022 The Holy Cross on which Our Lord was crucified was first discovered by Saint Helena in the year 326. A large part of it was placed in a church in Jerusalem. This Holy Cross was stolen from Jerusalem in 615 by Chosroes, a king of the Persians. After many prayers and fasts, and a battle to recover it, the Emperor Heraclius defeated Chosroes and brought back the Holy Cross to Jerusalem, fourteen years after it was stolen. This was in the year 629. Part of the Cross was kept in J...erusalem, but a great part of it was brought to the Church of Holy Cross in Jerusalem, in Rome, one of the seven great churches of the Holy City. How close the wood of this Cross was and is to the heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary, anyone who is her child can see. The Holy Scripture tells us, There stood by the Cross of Jesus, [Mary] His Mother. Mary stood above Jesus in the crib; Mary stood below Jesus on the Cross. Mary took Jesus from her arms and put Him in the crib. Mary took Jesus from the Cross and held Him in her arms. Both the Holy Cross and the Holy Crib have churches for themselves in Rome: the Church of the Holy Cross of Jerusalem and the Church of Saint Mary Major, and both are guarded there by Marys love. 08.01.2022 May these two great Martyrs and Spiritual Fathers give us, too, the spirit of martyrdom so needed in our post-Christian world.
08.01.2022 The things that we do tell us who we think we are. The truth is that who we are should determine what we do yet the world behaves as if what we do defines the essence of who we are.
08.01.2022 St. Joseph of Cupertino joined the Conventual Franciscan order and he struggled greatly with his studies. People often thought he was stupid. The best he could do was to learn a small portion of the material he was supposed to know, and then pray that he would be asked about the portion that he did know. He miraculously passed his exams and was able to become a priest. He was called The Flying Friar because he often levitated off the ground while deep in prayer. His ability... to levitate was a difficulty for him because people would come to watch him like a spectacle. His gift of levitation taught him to be humble and obedient. While with the Franciscans he would levitate at the mention of any holy thing and only a command from his superior could bring him to the ground. He was investigated because of his anti-gravitational activities and was subsequently moved into seclusion. He died at 60 years old and after his death miracles were reported at his tomb. He was canonized 100 years later. He is patron of test takers, students, mental handicaps, air travelers, astronauts, pilots, and is invoked by children, adults and the elderly who are unloved, abandoned or neglected.
