Late last year I travelled up to Darwin & was treated to the most amazing helicopter flight over Kakadu National Park. We stopped at Yellow Water Billabong for a wildlife... cruise & it was there that I got a taste of wildlife photography. It certainly wasnt as easy as I thought it would be. You need a quick shutter which means there needs to be a lot of light, but you also need to ensure you have a good depth of field. It took me a while to get it all right but once I did I was hooked. 21.01.2022 #TAKEOVER Gday again folks, Cliffo here with you to share my 2nd takeover post/picture. My first lightning capture.... So, since getting a taste for photography I decided to join up to Instagram (mainly to test the waters & see if anyone would take a liking to any of my pictures). While I was scrolling through I came across some amazing lightning pictures & straight away wanted in on it. Fortunately for me, it happened to be our storm season. A few days (& a few sneaky tutorials ;D) later I was watching the weather radar & saw some nice looking storm cells heading our way! So I quickly (well as quick as I could lol) Packed up my camera gear including my sturdy Benro Australia A3580T tripod, my camera & my 10mm f2.8 Samyang Optics Australia lens, jumped in the car & headed straight up to the highest headland I could find to set up. After "blowing out" (overexposing) a few pictures, I changed my settings to where I thought it might be better. Then BOOM, the whole sky lit up above me & was like daylight for a few moments. After regathering myself I quickly checked the camera to see if I got the shot. I was absolutely stoked at what I saw! I had captured my first lightning strike! As with the wave picture, I was now totally hooked on storm & lightning photography. I now spend more time than I should checking the weather apps to see if theres the slightest chance of a storm heading my way haha. What got you into photography? I have been to the States to chase in Tornado Alley twice now and I can...t wait to be able to go again. There is nothing that compares to life on the road, eating lots of bad food and chasing huge supercells with a bunch of like-minded nutcases. Its an adrenaline packed adventure where you get to see amazing cloud structure, lots of lightning, massive hail and the odd tornado if youre lucky! The five images above were taken back on 27 May 2019 near Imperial, Nebraska, USA. They are some of the different stages of the same storm which ended up being nicknamed the Imperial Mothership due to its shape. It was one of the most photogenic storms anyone had ever witnessed and definitely my favourite. The first shot shows why it earned its nickname and if you zoom in you can just see a tornado at the bottom of the storm in the centre. See my story for some video of this storm! 10.01.2022 #TAKEOVER Gday folks, Cliffo here again to share with you another memorable moment of mine. Sunsets.... I started thinking about interesting spots in my area that I could go for a good sunset shoot. There wasnt a lot to choose from in my town on the East Coast of Australia, Sunrises on the other hand, were a dime a dozen. Anyhow, I thought maybe the local sailing club could have a nice composition, so off I went. It was the middle of winter so it was pretty fresh out on the water & I dont handle the cold too well either these days. I looked around for some sort of composition & there wasnt a lot down there, except for a random tree. I plonked my trusty Benro Australia A3580T tripod down into the freezing, calf height water & set up the rest of my gear. As I framed the shot it seemed like the sunset was going to fizzle (just my luck!) and by now the small bit of feeling that I have in my lower limbs had totally disappeared! After contemplating packing up I thought "bugger it, Im here, Ill just wait it out & see what happens". By this stage it was just about dark & I had to light up the foreground with my phone. Then BAM! For about 2 minutes the whole sky just lit up & I managed to get this shot. My first sunset picture. Its also been one of my most popular images. Next I had to get out of there with zero feeling at all in my feet while carrying expensive camera gear in the dark through the water. It took the 20 minute drive home with the heater on flat out just to get my feet back to the pins & needles stage of numbness! I still put myself in some pretty precarious situations, as youll see in my last takeover post in a couple of days so stayed tuned for that one! 09.01.2022 #TAKEOVER Gday again folks :) Cliffo with you to share my 4th takeover post. The perfect wave!... This picture would have to be right up there with my all time favorites that has come out of my camera. I couldnt begin to tell you how many times Ive mind surfed this wave :D Everything just seemed to line up for this shot. Mother nature was on my side that day. I was down at one of the local spots shooting people getting epic barrel after epic barrel for hours. I wanted to "stay for one more" as they say, but my body was screaming at me. It was time to leave. On the way back to the car I spotted this little nook in the bushes & saw a few average waves roll through. But this little nook definitely had my attention! So I thought "Ill stay for one more" haha. And Im glad I did. I set down my gear & lined up this little nook in the bushes. I waited for about 20 minutes when I saw this majestic wave roll on through. I couldnt believe that nobody had taken off on it! It was such a perfect wave (& much bigger than it looks mind you) Needless to say, I was stoked to see I had captured it! Thank goodness I had my trusty Benro Australia tripod holding everything nice & steady for me as I was using a pretty long focal length for this shot. 09.01.2022 #TAKEOVER Hello, Anna from Fox Cottage Photography here again. I was going to post something other than storm-related images and thought who am I kidding? and so here we have some lightning! The eight (sorry, not sorry) images above were all taken back in 2019 on my last storm chase in Tornado Alley mostly in Texas. You will see that everything really IS bigger in Texas judging by the height of some of these bolts.... Lightning is probably my favourite part of a storm. It is caused by the ice particles within the storm bumping into each other causing an electric charge which eventually discharges in the form of lightning. Ive only come close to a bolt three times and its quite frightening and the resultant thunder very deafening! Lightning is not easy to photograph and usually requires a trigger during daylight (I use a Pluto Trigger). When its dark things get a little easier and you can use a long exposure, but timing can be tricky if the lightning isnt frequent. If you have any questions about capturing lightning, leave them in the comments below You definitely need a sturdy tripod when shooting lightning as it is usually quite windy and as you are generally shooting in low light, hand held isnt an option. I couldnt resist sharing some of my favourite shots from last years trip to Alberta, Canada . 1. Moraine Lake, Banff National Park. Never before have I had my breath taken away quite like this. That morning we got up early to beat the crowds & upon arrival, climbed straight up the rocky hill at the end of the lake. It wasnt until you got to the top that you could see the... full scale of the beauty of the place. The water there is an unbelievable aquamarine & along with the snow-topped peaks & dark green pines, the place looks just like a postcard! . 2. Grizzly Bears! We were told not to expect to see any bears, let alone grizzlies. We ended up seeing 7 bears in total, 5 of which were grizzlies including these two. Wed stopped by the side of the road to watch the larger bear grazing when all of a sudden up popped baby bear! What an absolute treat that was! . 3 . Sunwapta Falls, Jasper National Park. This waterfall is spectacular. You basically walk around a corner & boom, there it is in all its glory. I had seen pictures from here before but had no idea where it was so we were stoked to basically stumble across it. The power of all that water was amazing to witness. 03.01.2022 #TAKEOVER Good Evening folks, Cliffo here with you for my last takeover post! This picture for me holds so many different emotions. Excitement, fear, amusement, disbelief & frustration to name a few.... It was nearly on sunset, and I had been watching this beast of storm cell rolling straight towards us with another front bee lining at it from the west! I thought this could get real messy real quick, but awesome messy, as in huge bolts of lightning messy! I hobbled on down the break wall & set up my gear, consisting of the brilliant Samyang Optics Australia 10mm lens & my solid as a rock Benro Australia tripod. As I watched the storm I thought for all money it was going to go around us. I couldnt have been more wrong! All of a sudden this huge angry looking shelf cloud started to form up & head straight towards me. It was beautiful! Crazy orange sunset to the right, scary dark green to the left & lightning hanging out of it everywhere. In true Cliffo style, I wanted to pull the pin at the very last moment. Big mistake. The wind suddenly went from a nice cool breeze to around 80km/h! Then the rain started. I still had a 200 odd metre hobble to get back to the car. I was literally crab walking, leaning into the wind, when whoosh! I got clean blown over! By this stage it was pouring rain, cyclonic winds & lightning raining down everywhere. More worried about keeping my camera gear dry, I just lay there sheltering it, after a few minutes of getting soaked I decided to try & crawl to an undercover area to wait it out. I managed to find a step that I could use to get myself back onto my feet & hobble to the undercover area. So Id have to say this for me would have to be my most memorable picture. 02.01.2022 #TAKEOVER G day Everyone! here with you. Ill be doing a takeover on the Samyang Optics Australia and Maxxum pages over the next 5 days to share some of the most memorable pictures of my photography journey to date. But firstly, Id like to say a HUGE Thank You to Maxxum for giving me this opportunity to represent their products as a brand ambassador. It really means a lot to me.... For those who missed my intro, one difference between myself and most of the general population, is that I have a Spinal Cord Injury (C-5 Incomplete). Fortunately, I have recovered reasonably well considering my original diagnosis. For a super quick run down, I cant open my right hand, cant get up off of the ground if I trip, slip or get bowled over by a wave or the wind, walk with a forearm crutch, am super unstable on my feet, have a very altered sense of feeling from my neck down & many many more unpleasant symptoms that go along with having a spinal cord injury. All of which can make photography a very tricky thing for me, but I love a good challenge. This picture was the first picture outside of the house that I took with a DSLR camera (the ol Canon 60D) and what got me totally hooked on photography. As I was a keen surfer and spent most of my life on or around the water (when I wasnt riding motorcycles), I found that in a way it gave me the connection back to the water and the ocean. I find these days I get just as much froth over taking pictures of clean barreling waves or people getting epic barrels as I did when I was out there getting amongst it myself.
