25.01.2022 Un incroyable créateur de poupées !
24.01.2022 We had a string of agate beads, all cut from a vein that displayed a cross in the centre, so each bead had a cross in the middle. I should have taken a picture of it prior to it being sold. But here is another surprise of nature- a star within a twig.
24.01.2022 Can not claim to have seen one before.
22.01.2022 This incredible sculpture from the 1800’s is called "The Double Statue of Mephistopheles and Margarita". There is a large mirror behind the sculpture so that yo...u can see both figures and appreciate the skill of the unknown author of this unusual creation. The statue was created from a single piece of an ancient sycamore tree. See more
22.01.2022 On this day in 1932 Australia’s first milk bar was opened! Located in Martin Place, the Black and White 4d Milk Bar was founded by Greek migrant Joachim Tavla...ridis, who later adopted the name Mick Adams. In addition to selling basic groceries and newspapers, early milk bars offered all kinds of lollies, milkshakes and fizzy drinks. Unlike contemporary eateries with table service, it featured a bar counter with limited seats on one side and milkshake makers and soda pumps on the other, showing an American influence. The Library holds a fascinating collection of memorabilia documenting Australia's early milk bars, including photographs and newspaper clippings. 12.01.2022 EDIT AT THE BOTTOM I want to tell a story about why this funky teapot (the Aladdin teapot by Hall) is my favorite thing. I found this at one of my favorite ant...ique/estate sale shops in my hometown - St.George Utah. I saw it and had a feeling... the lady who owns the place had to gingerly move like fifteen objects out of the display case to grab this, another teapot just like it but white, and a small sugar bowl. Once in my hands I instantly flipped it upside down to find what I was looking for - the signature stamp making it an official Hall piece of pottery. When I was a little girl (meaning I was a teen) my parents gave me and my sister a gold sugar bowl and cream pitcher. It was then that I found out that my great grandfather came to this country to work at Hall as a porcelain painter - his specialty was working with the 24k gold. At the time I was trying to decide what interests I should pursue - science, like the rest of my siblings, or art and the humanities. Finding out about my great grandfather helped boost me in the right direction- to follow my heart! I now work in the social services and make art for myself and others. This was the first Hall piece I found and since then I have found three more teapots - all with intricate gold patterns painted on them and I hope to keep expanding! Anyway, it was a story that brings me joy and I wanted to share. If you ever find a Hall piece - reach out, I'll probably want it <3 EDIT: I am so glad you all enjoyed my story. I've attached photos of my little collection and the Hall Stamp I was talking about. Thank you for the recommendations on where to look (literally planning a trip to Ohio and the South right now) and enjoying a small sampling of my book collection. <3 Oh and I do rub it every time before I use it. Just in case. Still waiting for that genie...
11.01.2022 Many of the old "living rooms" had wire suspended from the ceiling to hold the four corners of a quilting frame. It was a community builder, like corn shuckings... and tater diggings. A time when helping your neighbor was not an obligation but an honor. Every old soul that leaves us takes with them a priceless repository of memories, knowledge, and experience. Preserve what you can." (From the book "The Quilters" Women and Domestic Art: An Oral History, 1978) via Kimberly Wright

11.01.2022 As long as there is even just one antiques restorer left in the world , there will be a need for a gold leaf maker.
11.01.2022 On this day in 1930 the two halves of the Sydney Harbour Bridge touched for the very first time! The historic event was commemorated by the raising of the Bri...tish and Australian flags on both sides of the Bridge. Once the arch was done, the rest of the Bridge was built with speed. In 1932 the final piece of granite was laid on the northwest pylon, and the Bridge was declared safe for traffic. Learn more about the arch that cut the sky with our online story and podcast 'The Bridge'. Explore it here: https://thebridge.sl.nsw.gov.au/ ‘Series 07: Sydney’ by Arthur Ernest Foster, c 1930

03.01.2022 My aunts most recent roadside find! I thought it was worth sharing here... After doing some research, I think it’s a library chair? It turns into a step stool by flipping the top half of the chair to the ground. I’ve never seen one before & I thought it was pretty neat.
