24.01.2022 It was 3 years ago tonight, that the beautiful, old, original 115 year-old Mayfield Cottage was struck by lightning and burnt to the ground. It took a couple of years to re-build, but we're so glad we did. Watching children spend some of their most precious years in such a beautiful, natural and respectful space is so heart warming to see - I'm almost certain the special memories of their magical childhood at Mayfield will last a lifetime. #naturalchildhoodpreciousmemories

20.01.2022 This morning nature treated us with fog and many beautiful spider webs glistening on the fence lines around the cottage. We noticed Spring is now here with many beautiful flowers starting to bloom around us. As it warmed up during the morning we noticed those webs had disappeared and the fog had lifted. We heared a sound. It was horses! They were tied up to the fence nearby. The children have been fascinated lately with the horses, so it was time for another adventure to see what was happening!! The horses were getting their hooves cleaned and trimmed, how exciting! As we watched and observed the tools being used a child had shared a story..." My mummy gets that done but she gets nail polish. Are they going to put red nail polish on the horses toes too?"....I wonder...will they?

18.01.2022 While out on our Beyond walk we shared a beautiful moment with nature. A baby bird took flight from the branch above us as we were exploring the tree. It landed on the tree trunk just near the children. We stood back and observed him trying to make the big climb up the tree to his mum who was flying through the branches above us. The baby bird kept trying and trying and never gave up. The children expressed how clever the baby bird was as he was using his feet to climb up the... tree. Each time he fell back to the ground the children said, "he will try again". We could see that our presence may have been a little stressing for the baby bird, so we decided to leave him be at this important time of learning with his mummy who was calling to him. When we returned to the cottage, we researched what type of bird it was. We believe it was a beautiful Wattle bird. The children were amazed at how resilient this bird was and how he was using his feet to climb the tree instead of flying. So much conversation was happening as to 'why' he couldn't fly up to his mum. The children thoughts were - "maybe he couldn't fly because his wings are still growing?", "he can’t fly because he needs to learn how to climb first, I think he can’t fly because he didn’t eat worms for breakfast, his mummy had worms you know! We were so grateful that we had witnessed such determination and resilience from such a small little bird who showed us how to be brave when things get tough.....to keep trying and if by chance you fall.... believe in yourself and try again! 17.01.2022 Yesterday we celebrated Early Childhood Educators Day. We would like to say a huge thank you to all of our Mayfield families for the fantastic start to our journey together so far and for your kind messages. As educators we feel very blessed to be trusted by you all to look after your precious children. All of their vibrant personalities keep a smile on our faces and make our jobs very pleasurable on a daily basis. An extra special thank you to Benjamin’s family for the chocolates ( teachers sustenance) and to Fletchers family for the absolutely gorgeous handmade and embroidered aprons....we will be sure to put them to good use during our cooking experiences in the future. Finally a big THANKYOU to our little photographer Charlotte for taking the photos today

15.01.2022 What a morning full of adventures we have had. From exploring the track to catching tadpoles in the dam, finding a quiet spot to draw and to jumping in the mud. Today we celebrated Outdoor Classroom Day by doing what we do every day at Mayfield by exploring and learning in our natural environment.

So observation is not only an individual action but also a reciprocal relationship. It is an action, a relationship, a process that makes us aware of what is happening around us.

15.01.2022 One of the things I’ve noticed about inquiry projects with the children currently is how everlasting the learning is. A few days ago, we had a nest inquiry we embarked on after the discovery of a nest that fell out of a tree near the cottage. This discovery created some interesting discussions and wondering about nests. Some of the questions that came up were - Why do birds (and other animals) build nests? How do they build nests? What things do the birds use? and How long d...oes it take to make a nest?" To extend on the children's interest in nests, we created a provocation in the Art Studio. We had been working with clay over the last few weeks and we wanted to give the children a new experience with this popular material. Miss Beverly had shared her small bird nest she had found in her paddock. We described how it felt rough, prickly, scratchy. soft, smooth, etc. We notice horsehair also in the nest. This inspired the children to create many types of nests. Some were created outside with sticks, grass and flowers, while others were created with clay, sticks and horsehair. See more

14.01.2022 We had our second little chick hatch this morning, leaving only one more in the incubator. Fingers crossed that little guy can hold off until tomorrow so the children can see it all unfold :)

13.01.2022 Happy Friday Everyone! Natural Childhood...Precious Memories

13.01.2022 Today we acknowledged National Sorry Day at Mayfield. The day is an opportunity for all Australians to remember past mistakes and build stronger bridges for a richer, stronger future together. We shared the story ‘Sorry, Sorry’, talking about how important it is to care for the people, the land, plants and animals. To show how we care for the land we planted a native thyme shrub into our bush tucker garden. As the children listened and shared their ideas we documented their voices into our floorbook to continue our journey of understanding as we begin National Reconciliation Week tomorrow.

13.01.2022 How do you push a wheelbarrow full of cuttings down the stairs? With many helping hands and teamwork!!! The children had noticed that Mr Bruce had done some clipping this morning around the cottage and thought they would help out. They worked together to fill the wheelbarrow and shared many laughs. What else can you do but laugh and try again when the wheelbarrow tips over.

13.01.2022 They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We shall remember them. Lest we forget.... With our hand on our hearts on the 11th hour today, we stopped to take a breath for one minute to pay our respect to the brave men and women of the armed forces, who gave their lives in the line of duty. We thank you.

13.01.2022 We welcomed one of our local paramedics to Mayfield. He shared his knowledge of first aid with the children. The children were keen to volunteer to be patients as we were shown how to bandage and how to use a sling. He talked to the children about how people can be asleep when they’re hurt and rolling them on their side might just help them. The children were then shown how to do compressions and given the opportunity to have a go on one of the pretend paramedic dolls. The f...inal piece of information shared was very important. How do we call the ambulance? We ring 000, for the ambulance, fire brigade and police. What a wonderful experience for the children. Natural Childhood.....Precious Memories

10.01.2022 Today we took part in National Simultaneous Storytime at 11am. The children counted down 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1.... and the story began. The story was titled ‘Give Me Some Space’ written and illustrated by Philip Bunting. We went on an adventure with Una through space looking for life in space and discovering planets. Una found life in space and it was on Planet Earth. The message was how important it is to look after our planet as we are the only planet in our solar system that has life.

10.01.2022 What a time for celebration at Mayfield We have celebrated our first Christmas in the cottage and celebrated with our families the end of our first six months of exploring. A very special moment shared was seeing our first kindy children celebrate their learning and watching them grow. We would like to thank all the parents for your support this year. 09.01.2022 Today was a glorious day to be out in the Beyond. The children shared with us as we walked where they would like to explore. After a chat with Mr Bruce where he shared that a calf was born yesterday, the first stop was to try and spot the calf. We were gifted with this opportunity, so we took the time to sit and watch. The calf was beautiful, and he was keeping close to his Mum. His Dad came down to check on him and make sure he was safe. The children had decided to continue ...along the track where we discovered mushrooms and heard the call of the Plovers. A drink stop was needed at the water tank where we saw the most beautiful rocks of many colours and shapes. On our way back the children found tracks to follow which led us back the way we came. The day was not complete without checking on Goldie the goldfish and climbing a tree. The children seemed very happy to see Dulux the horse who came over to the fence to visit us. There were many excited faces and voices as our conversations flowed about the amazing things that nature shared with us today. 08.01.2022 This morning we noticed a special visitor sitting on our fireplace mantel. The children are so excited to see him. We can't wait to see what the elf will do while he is visiting us at Mayfield Nature Kindergarten. We did find a small note that said he is currently in quarantine.....but only for 24 hours. I wonder what magic he will bring?

We watched them and discovered that they could squeeze through the fence. It has been lovely watching the children share their space with the chickens and the care that they have shown. The chickens came home and fell asleep just outside our door where they were raised. There was great excitement yesterday as they wandered into the cottage to check out what was going on.

06.01.2022 We had a bunch of flowers that were looking a little tired in our Art Studio, so we thought we would make beautiful flower paint with them.....The children enjoyed pounding and mashing the flowers in our Mortar and Pestle bowl. It harnessed the natural childhood schema of transforming changing the state of a material. As the children used a repetitive action of schematic play, it enabled them to construct meaning in what they were doing. When blending all the flowers together it created a new fragrance the children named 'Flower crush".

05.01.2022 Deeper form of empathy..... At Mayfield Nature Kindergarten, we have regular walks into the Beyond which expose the children to various animals. We aim to help children learn empathy, to love and to care for all types of animals. The children will then soon learn to empathise with not just animals but with everyone around them. Today the children displayed empathy to our beautiful mummy cows who were feeling sad as they had to say goodbye to their friends. The children gave them ‘Magic Happy’ hay and sang the ‘If your happy and you know it’ song to them. Natural Childhood.....Precious Memories

05.01.2022 It was exciting to see all the children skip through the door ready for new adventures in 2021....Our week started with the wonderful discovery of water in our balancing log and mud in our garden. When we discover these things what else can we make but mud pies.... and how delicious they were. There was a challenge with our bamboo ramps to see how fast the balls could roll down, while just outside more children had set a challenge for our wonderful educator Miss Beverly.....H...ow fast can you run? Miss Beverly could run fast and so could the children as they chased her around the yard. What a great time and many laughs were had as they all collapsed at the end. We have been watching our basil grow in our garden and after a conversation we decided to make basil pesto. The children were using their senses to smell the garlic, basil, olive oil and Parmesan cheese and then used a pestle and mortar to mix it all together. This was then served on crackers for all to try. We had a visit from Raspberry and Scruff (guinea pigs), we found beetles in the garden and many master pieces were being painted for loved ones at home.
