We're so happy to welcome Dr Mia Wescott back from maternity leave 2 days a week from 19th October. If you've not met Dr Mia before she enjoys all areas of GP practice and the challenges it brings. She is passionate about women’s and children’s health, and has experience in these areas having previously worked in Paediatrics. With experience working in remote Aborigina...l communities, Mia is also interested in Indigenous health. Mia trained with MMC as a GP Registrar, and after completing her training and travelling overseas, she returned to our practice in January 2019. MMC is delighted to be working with Mia again and we are sure that the many patients who have seen her in the past will be equally delighted by her return. 19.01.2022 Climate Change is a Health Emergency! From bush fires to Covid, it’s been a tough period. ‘More and more Australians are recognising that climate change will bring negative impacts on our health, particularly for people with chronic health conditions, older Australians and young children’. Climate change may feel like something too big and too overwhelming for us to fix as individuals. When we’re overwhelmed we can feel helpless and sustained periods of feeling helpless may l...ead to depression. There are things we can do though, such as letting our political leaders know how we feel and what we want them to do. Visiting, calling, emailing or writing to your local Member is a great start. We can also join a local group to work with other like minded folks and we can keep our eye out for campaigns others have organised like this one: The campaign calls on the federal government to develop a National Strategy on Climate Health and Well-being. 09.01.2022 This week is International Compost Awareness Week. This campaign hopes to improve awareness of the importance of compost, a valuable organic resource and to promote compost use, knowledge and products. We can compost to help scrap carbon pollution by avoiding landfilling organic materials and helping to build healthier soils. Here is some information provided by ICAW that may help you learn more about composting at home: Each year over half of our household garbage is made up... of food and garden waste. Most of this organic waste can be recycled by composting it. By turning food scraps and organic garden waste into compost you can: Improving soil quality and garden vitality by releasing rich nutrients into the soil. Suppressing plant diseases and pests, this reduces or eliminates the need for chemical fertilisers and manures helping you save money. Reducing the amount of organic waste going to landfill therefore preventing greenhouse gas emissions and leachate which can pollute land, groundwater and waterways. Helping soils retain moisture you do not need to water that often. Helping absorb and filter runoff, protecting streams from erosion and pollution. What to add in your compost bin: Vegetable and fruit scraps, vegetable oil, prunings and lawn clippings, tea bags and coffee, grounds, vacuum dust, shredded paper and cardboard, used potting mix, egg shells, flowers. 06.01.2022 Today is World Hand Hygiene Day. Now more than ever it is important to raise awareness to improve hand hygiene practices. ‘World Hand Hygiene Day aims to maintain global promotion, visibility and sustainability of hand hygiene in health care and to bring people together in support of hand hygiene improvement around the world.’ Approximately 70% of health care workers do not routinely practise hand hygiene, with health workers reporting misunderstandings about the relevance and importance of hand hygiene in everyday clinical practice. https://www.youtube.com/watch
04.01.2022 Today is World Asthma Awareness Day! According to WHO, it was estimated that more than 339 million people had Asthma globally and there were 417,918 deaths due to asthma at the global level in 2016. https://youtu.be/DDsvb3oqVCk Important information to know:... 1. Asthma can occur at any age (in children, adolescents, adults and elderly) 2. Asthma is not infectious. However, viral respiratory infections (such as common cold and the flu) can cause asthma attacks. Or In children, asthma is frequently associated with allergy, but asthma which starts adulthood is less often allergic. 3. When asthma is well controlled, asthma subjects are able to exercise and even perform top sport. 4. Asthma is most often controllable with low dose inhaled steroids Common symptoms are: wheezing, a feeling of not being able to get enough air or being short of breath, feeling of tightness in the chest and coughing. It’s important to note that you don’t have to have all these symptoms to have asthma. If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, book in to see one of our GPs at MMC.
