21.01.2022 They were the tractors, ploughs, harvesters and vehicles of the latter half of the 19th century, and their contribution to agriculture is felt more keenly in th...e Fassifern area of the Scenic Rim (QLD) than possibly anywhere else in Australia. From 1849 the Wienholt family began building an agricultural empire in Queensland, and by the 1870s their Fassifern run was the headquarters of their 48-property holding. They'd fatten the cattle brought in from western Queensland here on lush pasture before taking them to market in nearby Brisbane. And the animal they chose to support their operations? Yep, the clydesdale. In fact, their Fassifern property was renowned for its clydesdale stud. The work achieved by these fine equines meant the area flourished and a large service town grew on land that was once part of another pastoral run, Dugandan. The early settlement was referred to by three names that seem to have been interchangeable - Dugandan Scrub, Blumbergville (after the three Blumberg brothers who opened the first store) and Boonah (an indigenous word). The latter became the official name in 1887 with the arrival of the railway. And while most places dismissed the clydesdale after the introduction of the iron horse and agricultural mechanization, not the Fassifern area. The Ehrich (Erich) family steadfastly maintained the last purebred clydesdale stud in Queensland - without their dedication the breed would have disappeared in Australia. And today the heavy horse's contribution to the Fassifern is embraced. 'Clydebuilt', a massive tribute by eminent sculptor Andrew Scott unveiled 15 years ago, stands at the entrance to Boonah. The sculpture has been declared a 'National Heritage Icon' by the Queensland National Trust. The annual Scenic Rim Clydesdale Spectacular celebrates the role clydesdales played in the area. To be next held in June 2021, it'll not just showcase heavy horses in harnesses and ploughing, there'll also be demonstrations of the trades which supported the clydesdale's work, including wheelwrights, blacksmiths and harness makers. And as a nod to their origin, the event includes all things Scottish, where the clydesdale developed as a draft breed in the early 1700s. Haggis in Boonah anyone? Only if you Visit Scenic Rim.
