25.01.2022 There was great excitement today when our new (preloved) baby grand, formally of Norwood Concert Hall fame, was delivered to the Cumberland Park Community Centre. Earlier this year NPSP council made the decision to purchase a new full size grand piano, more befitting of their Concert Hall and last week City of Mitcham elected members voted to give the baby grand a new home. Robert Brown (Mitcham Orchestra) and Bill Eime (Cumberland Park Orchestra), whose orchestras both practise and perform at Cumberland Park are thrilled with the purchase as they can now increase their range, and entertain invited pianists. I'm really proud to see our council taking an interest in both sport and the arts as both are invaluable at building stronger, more resilient communities. #ournewbaby #makingmitchambitchin #rockingthecirculareconomy
20.01.2022 A second installation on the north eastern corner of the South Rd/Sturt Rd intersection was gifted by DIT to @cityofmitcham. Made from straps of 316 stainless steel by renowned Aboriginal artist Allan Sumner, the piece depicts a child and a flame in a coolamon. What an absolutely stunning sculpture to mark the entrance to the City of Mitcham. Once the lights are installed underneath the artwork it will make an incredible statement, particularly at night. #aboriginalart #reconcilliation #walkingtogether
19.01.2022 Axe throwing! I didn't know it existed it but apparently it's a thing that people do. Some people are really good at it but it pans out I'm really not. Great fun though. #maniax #happybirthdayson #cakegateoneyearon
16.01.2022 It was awesome to meet this legend, Doha Khan co-founder and coordinator of ADELAIDE - School Strike 4 Climate and campaigner with Fridays For Future Australia who is a current year 12 student. Amazing! We met at the Flinders University Investigator Lecture where she was part of an expert panel discussing Climate Change: Managing the unavoidable, avoiding the unmanageable. There has been a 17% reduction in global emissions during the covid-19 pandemic. What does this mean for the future? Could the current challenges speed up out transition to a zero-carbon economy? It was a fascinating discussion! #renewablesledrecovery #rethinkingourfuture #rockingthedocs
12.01.2022 Here is the letter I sent to Vickie Chapman on behalf of 11 mayors regarding greater protection for mature trees on private land. Dear Minister We, as Mayors of metropolitan councils, are increasingly concerned about the loss of tree canopy across Adelaide. We know that trees, especially mature trees, improve our health and wellbeing, increase property values, encourage walking and community connection, provide essential habitat, food and shelter for native fauna, regulate s...tormwater capture and storage and play a vital role in reducing urban heat build up. We also know that we are losing our significant, regulated and mature trees at an alarming rate. There is increasing community awareness of this problem and we welcome the push by the Planning Commission for stronger requirements for new trees on private land. While our councils have strong tree canopy targets and are actively engaging our communities in planting more trees on public and private land: - There is not enough available space on public land to replace what we are losing from people’s backyards. - Replacing an existing mature tree with one or even several young trees does not account for the many years of inadequate canopy cover as the trees grow - Climate change is adversely affecting the ability of trees to establish and mature Planting new trees is not enough. We must stop the loss of mature trees across our suburbs if we have any chance of meeting 30 Year Plan for Greater Adelaide canopy targets. We therefore urge you to review the regulations that govern the protection of regulated and significant trees as well as shifting the priority in Phase 3 of the Planning & Design Code towards retention of trees when development decisions are being made. Yours sincerely Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor City of Adelaide Mayor Anne Monceaux City of Burnside Mayor Angela Evans City of Charles Sturt Mayor Karen Redman Town of Gawler Mayor Amanda Wilson City of Holdfast Bay Mayor Kris Hanna City of Marion Mayor Dr Heather Holmes-Ross City of Mitcham Mayor David O'Laughlin City of Prospect Mayor Kevin Knight City of Tea Tree Gully Mayor Michael Hewitson City of Unley Mayor Michael Coxin City of West Torrens #mayorsunite #mayors4trees
12.01.2022 It's NAIDOC week and to celebrate we have a very special display in the corner window of the City of Mitcham Civic Centre. Created by the children at Eden Hills Kindergarten, the map of Australia is filled with footprints symbolising walking together on Aboriginal land. It's incredibly powerful. Drop by anytime during November for a better view. And if it's a Wednesday between 3-6pm, you're welcome visit me at my open forum "Share with the Mayor". #alwaywasalwayswillbe #edenhillskindergarten #makingmitchambitchin
06.01.2022 Today, along with Nicolle Flint Member for Boothby and Carolyn Power MP, I was honoured to take part in the opening of the new upgraded City of Mitcham clubrooms at Price Memorial Oval, home of Sturt District Cricket Club and Mitcham Hawks Football Club. I got to unveil the first plaque with my name on it!!! Excited and humbled all at once... The upgraded facilities were jointly funded by the state ($440k) and federal ($385k) governments, the clubs ($97k - plus extensive in k...ind donations) and council ($840k). The clubs have worked incredibly hard to make the upgrades a reality. Congratulations to all involved - club volunteers, contractors and council staff, on outstanding outcome. Well done! I was also very proud to introduce the new councillors for Gault Ward, Cr Rod Moss and Cr Coralie Cheney. It's great to finally have them on board. #femalechangerooms #volunteersrock #makingmitchambitchin See more
