25.01.2022 Although a quieter reflection than any other year, it was certainly no less significant or important. We stood at dawn to honour the sacrifice and courage of all those servicemen and women who have served our country. Lest we forget.

25.01.2022 OUR FINANCIAL TRACK RECORD | The Cairns Unity Team is guided by the principle "if you get the money right, the rest will follow." We believe we've achieved an e...nviable financial track record over the last two terms of Council. 1. Rate rises at or below CPI 2. $1 BILLION of Capital Works 3. Low debt (fourth lowest of comparable Qld councils) 4. Balanced budgets 5. Surpluses in operating expenditure 6. 90% of expenditure invested locally If returned for another term of Council, you can expect rates to remain at or around 2% and significant capital works programs: continuously improving Cairns and investing in our locals. https://cairnsunity.com.au/financial-track-record-speaks-f/ (Authorised by R Manning, 36 Guthrie Place, Bentley Park)

25.01.2022 I had some colourful characters on hand today, to help in launching the 2019 Cairns Festival Program. There's something for everyone. Check out the link below and mark your calendars. See you there!

22.01.2022 The Cairns Unity Team recently launched our new-look team for the 2020 election. Joining me and four sitting Councillors, Brett Moller (Division 1), John Schilling (Division 2), Max O'Halloran (Division 7) and Deputy Mayor Terry James (Division 4) in contesting the upcoming election will be three new faces: - Amy Eden (contesting Division 5)... - Kristy Vallely (contesting Division 6) - Rhonda Coghlan (contesting Division 8) We all bring different experiences but are motivated by the same desire: to make Cairns a better place. You'll have plenty of opportunities to engage with us over the coming weeks, whether you see us out pounding the pavements or at local community events. We're also holding some casual CommUNITY Conversations at local venues, and all are welcome. Head to the Cairns Unity Facebook page to find out about these opportunities to catch up. See our website www.cairnsunity.com.au for Our Vision, Guiding Principles, Councillor Bios and more. See you soon. (Authorised by R.Manning, 36 Guthrie Place, Bentley Park)

21.01.2022 Thank you to Deputy Mayor Terry James for hosting the Cairns Regional Council Round table for the British High Commissioner, Her Excellency Ms Victoria Treadell. Participants were able to brief the High Commissioner on the challenges and opportunities unique to the region. Cairns was chosen as the first regional visit, and we look forward to welcoming Her Excellency back. UK in Australia - British High Commission, Canberra

21.01.2022 Yesterday I had an opportunity to talk with the Governor of Queensland via video call to discuss the current challenges in our region and a way forward.

20.01.2022 OzHarvest Cairns collects quality excess food from commercial outlets and delivers it directly to local charities supporting people in need across Cairns. I volunteered with them this week to see firsthand the great work they do. In just 3 years, they've rescued over 300,000 meals locally, making sure the most vulnerable in our community benefit. If you want to find out more, donate or volunteer, check out the link: https://www.ozharvest.org/cairns/

20.01.2022 Last week saw the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Cairns - Minami Sister City relationship. We were thrilled to welcome the Mayor and other leaders from Minami who were able to enjoy the Cairns Festival while here. I've been told one of the members of the delegation could be my long lost brother!

19.01.2022 It’s hard not to have a laugh when Elliott Lovejoy’s around.

17.01.2022 These are strange and trying times unlike anything we’ve witnessed before. But there is another side of this, and we will come out of it. It’s largely up to us to determine how this goes down in the history books. If we prudently follow the public health guidelines and look out for our neighbours, we’ll all be much better off. Please act considerately, and with care as we move through these challenging months ahead. Where it’s safe to do so, please also support our local busi...nesses. Many of them have creatively come up with online offerings, and every purchase makes a difference. I hope there are some silver linings, such as more time to connect with family, to quieten the pace, perhaps the chance to pick up a new hobby. Cairns people are tough people, but more importantly I know they are kind people too. If we are all mindful of one another, we will get through this with grace. We must ensure that nobody gets left behind and that will be my singular focus. Council will continue to maintain services consistent with protocols established by the State and Federal Governments. Let us all work together with determination to beat this thing, which we can, and we will. If we do not pull our weight then we put someone else at risk, and I can assure that is not the Australian way. 14.01.2022 We had none other than Lisa Curry here to kick off #QSBW2019 at a Cairns Chamber of Commerce event this morning. It's safe to say everyone left feeling inspired, the perfect way to kick off a new week. This week is about celebrating and supporting small business - there's plenty of events happening in region over coming days. Details here: https://www.cairns.qld.gov.au/whats-on/whats-on

13.01.2022 Cairns Regional Council today adopted the 2019-2020 Budget. This is the sixth consecutive budget with a rate rise at or below CPI, and another surplus (for the 2018-2019 year). Of our total $380m expenditure this financial year, approx. 90% will be invested locally. With a $164.7m Capital Works program, you might call this the "something for everyone" budget. 12.01.2022 The Choral Fanfare 2019 State Finals were held yesterday. 10,000 Queensland kids took part, and it was two of our schools that took out the comp. A big congrats to Edge Hill Primary School and Cairns State High School for their winning performances, much deserved. https://www.cairnspost.com.au//f37e17d4cc127063b3c0b730319

08.01.2022 Today is Remembrance Day, marking the signing of the Armistice. It is a day for all of us to think about the sacrifices that have been made so that we may enjoy the Australia that we know and love today. We reflect too on those currently in our defence force who are prepared to fight for our values. Lest we forget.

08.01.2022 We are now on the home stretch to the 2019 Federal Election. For the Cairns region's enormous potential to be realised, investment in the right policy and infrastructure is critical. To view the Cairns Regional Council 2019 Priorities, see www.tiny.cc/cairnsfederalelection

08.01.2022 Well, that was a great way to start the weekend! The Reef Eye (presented by Cairns Chamber of Commerce) down on the ‘nade - a thumbs up from me.

05.01.2022 I got to spend the morning with a bunch of champs this morning. The AUS CROCS - Under 19 Australian Men's White Water Rafting Team cleaned up at the World Rafting Championships earlier this year, making them Cairns' own homegrown World Champions. These lads are a great example of what can be achieved with commitment and persistence.

04.01.2022 Great to have Mayor Bob Manning in Canberra where we met with Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack MP to discuss the Cairns City Deal Watch this space!

04.01.2022 Today, on Anzac Day, we come together at dawn to commemorate and honour, with our respect and appreciation, the sacrifice made by others that has kept us free. Lest we forget.

04.01.2022 I really enjoyed my visit to Bentley Park College where I gave a talk to students about tourism, as part of this semester's curriculum. I was impressed by their insightful questions. As I pointed out to the kids, one of them could be Mayor in as little as a decade or so!

01.01.2022 No matter the field, whether it's the Arts, Sport, Academia or even reality TV - it always gives me great pleasure to see Cairns take out the competition. My warm congratulations to The Block's Tess Cattana and Luke Struber on winning the biggest Block ever and doing Cairns proud!
