20.01.2022 The City's new Intercultural Centre in Bentley ticks all of the boxes. This investment in our future demonstrates Council's genuine commitment to providing venues and services to benefit our evolving community. It was a proud moment, as Mayor, to escort Hannah Beazley - Member for Victoria Park and Senator Kristina Keneally on a tour of the facility. I would also like to single out the Hon Kate Doust MLC for her unwavering support of this project since its inception.
15.01.2022 COVID. WE NEED TO HOLD THE LINE. I realise people may be becoming frustrated, I understand that at times the messaging from government may seem a little inconsistent, I get it that some of us are wary about being vaccinated - and I know that none of us want to wear a mask, but it's a small sacrifice for the fortunate position in which we find ourselves. Hold the line everyone!! We need to remain positive and show resilience... even when those are two attributes you may be str...uggling with. Let's do our bit, happily and in good faith because we owe it to those countries who are waking each day to a frightening reality that few of us could fathom. After reading about the unfolding human crisis across the globe - and the mounting death toll, I find it hard to understand how people here are losing their minds because they can't attend a game of footy. it seems a very small price to pay.
14.01.2022 NOT ALL DISABILITIES ARE VISIBLE Today is the International Day of Persons with Disabilities and the 2020 theme ‘Not all Disabilities are Visible’ is important. The City hosted a terrific event today at the Cannington Leisureplex with a fun day of activities to foster inclusion in our Leisureplexes and in our community in general, and I took the time to pop in and meet many of the attendees. ... I had a really good chat with Katrina and her assistance dog Lacey (pictured). Outwardly Katrina's doesn't fit the generally accepted notion of disability, and Lacey (a Border Collie crossed with a Wire Haired Terrier) sure doesn't look like an assistance dog and that's why the "Not all Disabilities are Visible" theme is so important. Katrina has a brain tumour and is recovering (thankfully xx). Unfortunately she 'fits' regularly and Lacey has been especially trained to alert Katrina to a oncoming fit. It allows her to take steps to protect herself before the fit occurs. Aside from that the tumour itself has had a devastating effect on her eyesight. She has been severely impacted and the changes to her life are permanent. If you passed Katrina in the street you wouldn't readily identify her as living with disability - but she does. She and Lacey have been together for almost 9 years and its a wonderful partnership borne from trust and devotion. Its a great story and it really has opened my eyes to the barriers facing many of our residents. Other disabilities that are not immediately apparent, include mental illness, chronic pain or fatigue, sight or hearing impairments, diabetes, brain injuries, neurological disorders, learning differences and cognitive dysfunctions, among others. Whilst the International Day of Persons with Disabilities occurred today - and is for 1 day a year, people with disability (and their carers) have a lived experience which endures for every day of the year. There is a lot of activity in the disability space, but more could certainly be done. AtWork Australia is running a terrific event on December 9 at Cannington Leisureplex to assist persons with disability identify employment options. Its a free event and details can be found right here https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/celebrating-diversity-and-i
11.01.2022 WILLETTON 'CRIME WAVE' UPDATE!! There is no crime wave. While others may seek to spread misinformation for their own purposes, I prefer to stick to facts. As a former 20 year veteran of the WA Police, crime - and crime prevention strategy, are subjects that I know well. ... The role of Council is to allay community fears - not fuel them, and so this week I asked WA Police District Superintendent Ricky Chadwick for up to date crime statistics comparing the year (to date) to the exact same date last year. [See table below]. These were the figures as of Monday 23 November 2020 compared to the figures at 23 November 2019. These were his comments; ________________________________ "Good morning Pat The below chart gives you this financial year and last FY comparison for Willetton. As you can see there has been significant drop in all crime types in Willetton, with a small exception to Non Family assaults (a low number in any event). There is almost a 50% reduction in Burglaries - which is huge." ________________________________ Yes there is crime in Willetton. Undoubtedly. But there is crime in every suburb, city, state, and territory. Comparatively Willetton is a safe suburb with a lifestyle many would (and should) envy. I ask residents to please don't get drawn into fear mongering. Meanwhile, we can all play our part in reducing crime by reporting suspicious activity (to police) keeping doors locked, installing security grills on windows and deadlocks on doors, installing CCTV, getting to know your neighbours (and keeping an eye out for each other) and by not leaving valuables in your car.
11.01.2022 Can anyone answer this question? We're trying to locate relatives of Canning's first woman Councillor, Mrs Erica Turner who was elected to Council in 1969.
10.01.2022 KEEPING A FINGER ON THE PULSE Crime prevention is the cornerstone of community safety, and Canning's relationship with WA Police is an essential component. I had the pleasure this morning to attend the WA Police District OIC Conference in Bentley to talk about my views on on crime strategy, my (former) 24 year career as a police officer, and my transition into local government. There was a lot of brass in the room, and many familiar faces. The audience was full of former c...olleagues - many of whom have now risen through the ranks to senior positions including my old mates Commander Mike Bell, Regional Superintendent Greg Knott, District Superintendent Ricky Chadwick, Detective Senior Sergeant Doug Stjepic (OIC Cannington Detectives) and Senior Sergeant Ray Anderson (OIC Cannington Police Station). There is much to be gained from partnering with WA Police and strengthening the relationship between our two organisations. Only through collaboration, cooperation and trust can we make Canning as safe as it can possibly be.
10.01.2022 WHARF STREET & HAMILTON STREET LEVEL CROSSINGS 'REMOVED' ELEVATED RAIL FULLY FUNDED 'NEW' QUEENS PARK STATION... 'NEW' CANNINGTON STATION Late yesterday afternoon Rita Saffioti MLA called me with news of today's big announcement and to congratulate the City of Canning on its advocacy for this project. *media statement below In 2020 CEO Arthur Kyron and I learnt that Stage 1 of Metronet's Armadale Railway Line upgrade would not include Canning, and would end at Victoria Park. Stage 2 - which was to occur years after Stage 1, would include elevated rail through Queens Park and Cannington but only included a moderate upgrade to Cannington Station. From that moment we set about advocating for 2 things: that Stage 1 and 2 occur together (minimising commuter disruption) - and bringing forward the Canning works by years a NEW station at Cannington Since our initial (very positive) meeting with Minister Saffioti, the CEO and I have continued to focus on these 2 key points, and even as recently as the past 2 weeks have met with both Ben Morton MP and Steve Irons MP to promote our views. Today's announcement of a $300M+ investment in the Armadale Line is great news for Canning residents, and it illustrates the government's willingness (both state and federal) to work collaboratively with local government. I'm immensely proud of the City and its staff for their work to progress this project, thankful to CEO Kyron for his advice and guidance, and equally thankful to all of our local members for their support and advocacy - including those mentioned above and our very own Bill Johnston MLA. I couldn't be more impressed or more grateful. Job done!! https://www.mediastatements.wa.gov.au//Joint-media-stateme

06.01.2022 THE WORLD IS A SMALL PLACE... This piece - 'Canning Landmarks', was created some years back by local artist Hazel Moore and recently gifted by her to Seth Yeoman (the Yeoman family was well known in Shelley/Rossmoyne). Seth, who knows my sister Margaret, then decided to donate the piece to the City of Canning - and he brought it in earlier this weeks (thanks Seth). ... Today, after a bit of detective work, I tracked down Hazel Moore who is now happily living in Cooktown in far north Queensland. We had a wonderful chat on the phone about her life, her travels, and the history of Cooktown. Her new home overlooks the Endeavour River and the mountains beyond. It sounds like the perfect artists retreat. Hazel is formerly a member of the Canning Arts Group and I am certain that she still has many friends here in Canning. She was really pleased to know that her art has come full circle and now has its rightful place right here in the City of Canning administration building. Case closed.
