18.01.2022 DETAILS Remote Contact Online until 31 May Josh Raymond is an artist, photographer, and cinematographer who has been at the nexus of digital cinema and contemporary art for over 20 years. Josh’s newest series is brought together in 'Remote Contact' to explore intimate and suggestive moments which touch, meet and connect. Referencing our new modes of interaction after periods of isolation, the series of photographic prints and transparencies within light boxes move... between plant and human life exploring forms in a contested and organised space. Drawing on photography’s rich history of portraiture and still life, Josh explores the exposure of the human form in connection to the eroticism of plant life. Images of the male form are met with flowers, flowing and dancing together, as Josh's works to create a sense of unease, interest and arousal. Presented here, 'Bleeding heart' displays a transparent print illuminated within a backlit lightbox. 'Plants are this great Trojan horse', Josh tells us, thinking of life borne from seed, a transformative and astounding form of life on this planet. Remote Contact by Josh Raymond, online now until 31 May. See the whole exhibition from the link in our bio. @joshraymond Images: Detail from Josh Raymond, 'Bleeding heart' 2021, transparency in lightbox. #mayspace #mayspacesyd #remotecontact #photography #joshraymond #onlinegallery See more

16.01.2022 EXHIBITION Josh Raymond Online now "I’m interested in the corporeal, the decline of the body, the utterly desirable body. I want you to be interested and aroused. The portraits or the photographs of men are also about navigation, a cartography of ideas and trying to make sense of things. I love that idea of travelling with your eyes, over a figure, around a body to the past, the future." - Josh Raymond ... Remote Contact now live until 31 May See the link in our bio for the full exhibition @joshraymond Image: Josh Raymond, Circumnavigation 2021, archival pigment print on Hahnemühle cotton paper, ed. of 6. #mayspace #mayspacesyd #joshraymond #photography See more

14.01.2022 ARTIST IN FOCUS It all starts with an image in my head Online til 31 May "I feel like I never switch off. I’m always in my studio somehow. Even when I’m out and about I’m constantly imagining the world. There’s this process of osmosis playing out. Ideas, images and books I’ve read, and conversations I’ve had, they all get fed in and get tumbled around and mashed together.... And then one day I’ll be out running or watering my garden and this image will just pop into my head. It all feels really random and a bit nuts. But I think there’s a really logical process operating outside my perception. I don’t act on those images immediately and I’ve also learnt not to interrogate them too much either. They need time to just sit and breathe. Sometimes they fade away but there are others that continue to haunt me. These are the ones that need to be made into paintings." With new videos and content coming weekly for the month of May, see here - https://www.mayspaceonline.com.au/2021-artist-in-focus-rebe now to view the full Artist in Focus. 12.01.2022 PROJECT I AM FROM THE BEGINNING Jon Frank and Marieka’s Jacob’s (FRANK JACOB) film ‘Scheveningen’ is presented as part of their series ‘I AM FROM THE BEGINNING’ for our Project space. The moving image work takes its name from the Dutch town north of The Hague. The artwork is accompanied by music composed by Sol Seppy. The piece shows thick and unabating sea foam. Forming more and more frequently as ocean temperatures rise and give way to algal blooms, the foam, while it can... be beautiful, is also a sign of ecological stress. See the full artwork on our website via the link in our bio. @jon_frank_ @mariekajacobsphotography Credit: FRANK JACOB, ‘Scheveningen’ 2020, digital video, 1920 x 1080 from 4K - 3:48min, edition of 3. 08.01.2022 PROJECT I AM FROM THE BEGINNING Online until 31 May "Around 18 months ago we relocated from Australia to the north west corner of Mallorca with our two young children. We were only initially coming for 6 months for the project, but due to the COVID situation, we've now been sequestered on the island for nearly 18 months, unable to repatriate home. ... ... Ideally with the work we wanted to create representations of the human form that were unencumbered by time or space. To tease out this concept we shot many of the images at depth in the Mediterranean sea so we could use the weightlessness and ethereal quality of the water as our canvas." - Marieka Jacobs Image: FRANK JACOB, 'Untitled; Biniaraix, Islas Baleares' 2020, chromogenic c-type print, edition of 7 in two sizes. We exclusively use 35mm & medium format film for its colour palette, dimensionality and granular structure. These photographs have been captured in-camera as exposed on the original film negative. They have not been digitally manipulated in any way. @jon_frank_ @mariekajacobsphotography #mayspace #mayspacesyd #mediumformatphotography #onlinegallery #mallorca See more

02.01.2022 LAST WEEK Waratah Lahy's solo exhibition 'The Shape of Things' closes this Saturday 19 December. The exhibition, combining works of watercolour, collage, and painting, suggest the way things will come to be in the future. Waratah has 'taken this phrase as the starting point for [her] current body of work: observing the way changes are taking place in [her] immediate surroundings and thinking about how they reflect national and global trends in the environment and society. A...lthough these ‘shapes’ indicate change, I’m also looking at the ‘shapes’ that endure: moments of beauty, wonder and comfort essential in a fast-paced world.'
