24.01.2022 This weeks activity is another STEM activity and involves bath time. There are many fun opportunities to play and talk about important early concepts during bath time. You could; * Put different objects in the bath and see if they float or sink. * Fill up and empty different containers with water and talk about full and empty. * Use different containers to pour and squeeze water out. Talk about what happens when you put the container under the water and squeeze.
24.01.2022 Hi everyone, We hope you and your family are safe and well. Playgroup is still not able to be held here at St John's School. We will let you know as soon as the situation changes and we can welcome you back again. In the meantime, keeping talking and playing with your mayu. If you have not already checked out the Australian Parenting Website, you may like to have a look. It has lots of resources for different ages including ideas for play. https://raisingchildren.net.au/
22.01.2022 Our Playgroup is open to Aboriginal families with children aged 0-4. We have 2 sessions each week, Wednesday afternoons from 1pm-3pm and Friday mornings from 9am-11am. Come and play and have fun with your children. Fruit is provided for morning tea on Fridays. We hope to see you soon!
19.01.2022 STEM Activity Using Jelly Get your child to describe the jelly crystals before and after water has been added (from a solid to a liquid). Have your child look in the fridge every half an hour as the jelly sets and talk about how it changes. Ask what would happen if some jelly is left out of the fridge after setting. Try it! You might like to add a frog on the top of the set jelly. You could sing a song about a frog jumping out of the pond before the jelly is eaten.
17.01.2022 Here are some useful tips from Sean Choolburra to stay connected to family if you are still unable to visit them and to keep our minds and bodies healthy. Let us know if you have any other great ideas. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7r1opmuSd9M
16.01.2022 Hi everyone, Today I thought I would share some movement activities you could enjoy with your mayu. Make your own obstacle course in the backyard. You could encourage your children to help design the course using their toys or household items. Use different language to describe where they should go. For example, over, under, around and through different obstacles. You could also encourage them to move in different ways. For example, roll, jump, run, ride.... Dance There are lots of great dancing and movement activities on Youtube. Find one that you all enjoy and do them together. Rising Star (Episode 1 link posted on Monday) has some singing and dancing ideas too. Feel free to comment some of the other activities you are using to keep your child active at home. If you have any suggestions of how these posts can further support you, please feel free to send a message. Have fun moving!

13.01.2022 Teddy Bears This week you may like to watch the Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear, Turn Around Song and have fun doing the actions as you sing along. You may like to make a teddy bear open sandwich together like the one in the picture. Use a piece of bread, spread it with chocolate or nutella spread, and add banana ears and nose with sultana eyes. There are also lots of easy teddy crafts that you could do. Google search teddy crafts for toddlers to find ideas. Have fun!... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76wc4xdgzGk
11.01.2022 Here are some sensory ideas you can use at home with your mayu. Sensory play supports your mayu's growth and development. Talking about the different textures and what they are doing also builds up your mayu's word knowledge. Have fun joining in the play! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SNjJaSj82g

08.01.2022 Today we will explore some STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) activities you can do at home with your child/ren using just the toys in the toy box. All of these activities should be fun and only continued if your child shows interest. You could; * Sort the toys according to size, colour, shape, weight or material and talk about how they are sorted. * Take 2 toys and guess which one is heavier. You could hold them in your hands to measure or use some scales. * See how quickly cars, marbles or balls roll down different surfaces such as books, baking trays or planks of wood.
07.01.2022 Hi Mayu's and parents, If you are looking for something to do to keep your children entertained during social isolation, here are a few things you could do with playdoh. Make your own playdoh using this recipe on Youtube. I'm sure your children would love to help you! How to Make Play Dough - Easy No Cook Recipe! | Sea Lemon... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oAIAm6BF0fs Roll snakes with the playdoh and then cut them into pieces using scissors or a blunt knife (if you allow your child to use them) Roll balls and count them, squash them, or add items you find in your garden to make funny creatures. Have lots of conversations about the size, colour or number of things you make together. Have fun!

04.01.2022 Play is a fun and important part of children's learning and development. Make some time throughout your day to spend time playing with your child/ children. Playing with you helps them to learn through copying your actions, it helps develop their language and interaction skills, it develops their imagination and it builds their resilience to cope with different situations. Who would have thought play was so important?
