17.01.2022 Today is Australian National Flag Day 119 years ago our national flag was raised for the first time. In 1915 a young Australia, federated for only fourtee...n years, found itself in a global crisis in the form of World War One. During that time of great uncertainty Banjo Paterson wrote the poem "We're all Australians Now." His words resonated for all Australians, not as children of individual states, but as united citizens facing the challenges of that time. Throughout its history, our flag has meant different things to all Australians, but in 2020 Paterson's words still echo.

12.01.2022 FLIRTING WITH DEATH! On Easter Sunday in 1923, well-known 22 foot yacht, the Arlene, was cruising half a mile off Rottnest. Suddenly, a strong puff of wind fill...ed its main sail and heeled the boat over. "Casting its human freight, consisting of twenty-two, men, women and children, into the water". The drama was captured by Fremantle photographer, Abraham (Izzy) Orloff. The yacht owned by Mr Moss Myslis, capsized in a spot that was "particularly treacherous". In the vicinity of a number of reefs and in waters "infested with sharks". The Zephyr ferry was going passed full speed at the time, but when she saw the drama, immediately stopped and quickly lowered the vessel’s dinghy into the water. Other boats too came to help. They included the 'Caledonia', who rescued four young ladies who by all accounts "took their dunking in good spirit". And the 'Salopia'. Rescue work was difficult owing to the strong south-west breeze. Women and children were picked up first, while men clung on to the capsized boat. Eventually a line was connected to the Arlene and the yacht towed into shore. Had it not been for the prompt rescue, several lives would probably have been lost. Fortunately "the final result was nothing worse than a fright and a thorough wetting a damp adventure for those concerned". In the days to follow however, the Call newspaper warned that there was going to be "a heart-rendering tally of dead one of these summers", if the foolish practices of a "few" yachtsmen were not "voluntarily or forcibly stopped". While the Call reporter had no doubt that Mr Myslis "sailed his boat well". That he was "reasonably intelligent" and had "the best intentions in the world" when he set out to Rottnest that day, in this case "his judgment was rotten". The Arlene was accustomed to carrying fifteen crew in a race, but twenty-two people, not all could swim, was a vastly different risk. It’s a yachtsman’s duty to remember that he and not the passenger, knows the danger of the sea, and it is for him to judge what is a fair thing and what isn’t. wrote the reporter. There are two kinds of yachtsmen who are a menace on the river", the article went on to say. "One which overloads the boat with a crowd of girls and even kiddies, and the other which fills up every available place with beer and makes itself a menace on the seas and a nuisance on the shore. However good hearted Mr Myslis was and however willing to accommodate friends aboard a boat, the reporter trusted that he would never attempt this "perilous prank" again. Have you ever had to be rescued on sea or land? Or have you ever had to go to the rescue? Share your rescue stories here... Note - This commentary has been sourced from articles appearing in WA newspapers at the time using the magic of Trove. It provides an insight into the event at the time but is not intended to be a definitive history.
