25.01.2022 This week has been flat out and it doesn't appear to be slowing up. Thanks again to everyone for their continued support. Bring on November and the silly season, we're ready to go!!
24.01.2022 Turbocharged, Supercharged, or Naturally Aspirated - all have their pros and cons and Mercedes-Benz has experimented with all of these engine setups over the years. Turbocharging is a very efficient form of forced induction as it takes exhaust gas that would otherwise be wasted and utilizes it to send more air (boost) back into the engine. The only major cons with turbochargers are excessive engine bay heat and turbo lag. Supercharging an engine provides you with instant lo...w down torque (and 'boost'), but due to the fact the supercharger is basically a giant air pump driven off the engine, it will suffer some parasitic loss at higher RPM. Naturally Aspirated means that air is not being forced into the engine, instead, it is sucked into the intakedepending on how much vacuum the engine is generating. NA engines have a very smooth and linear power delivery and can generally rev higher than a forced-induction engine. So with all that said, what is your engine preference? 23.01.2022 So, you guys guessed it - MB Star Motors project car is a 2006 Mercedes-Benz W164 ML63 AMG in Irridium Silver! It was recently purchased at a decent price due to it needing some general maintenance and having a blown-up transmission. Our plans are to rebuild the transmission and get everything else up to scratch, then do a few performance modifications on the exhaust, intake, and tune to see what kind of gains can be had.... This topic appears to be something a lot of you guys are interested in, so we look forward to sharing the process with you through photos, words and hopefully some video too. One thing we would like to do is run a 1/4 mile time in standard trim at the Motorplex, then for comparison, run another time once the car is tuned. I hope you are looking forward to it as much as we are! MBStar Motors 1/10 Macadam Place BALCATTA WA 6021 08 9240 6633 [email protected] www.mbstarmotors.com.au
23.01.2022 The Mercedes-Benz W126/C126 was the first S-class to be released with plastic bumpers and because of this decision it has aged gracefully and flawlessly. The pillarless doors, muscular body lines and aggressive front end ensure that the two door variant (C126) will go down as one of the all time greats. The 500SEC pictured below is equipped with 18" AMG Monoblock wheels from a much later model Mercedes - the W210 E55 AMG. The fact that they suit it so well is truly a testamen...t to the timeless design of the C126 SEC. 21.01.2022 Previously, we have discussed why engine removal is necessary for carrying out repairs and maintenance. Touching on that subject again, let'stalk about the most common techniquesemployed by mechanical workshops to extract an engine from a vehicle and some of their pros and cons. 1. By means of overhead crane or gantry crane. A gantry crane has two uprights on castor wheels with a connecting overhead beam and a chain/tackle winch. The main advantages of a gantry crane are mo...re lifting height and superior reach. With a gantry crane you are able to extract engines out and over the top of lifted 4x4 engine bays where a regular crane would not reach. The same goes for engines that are recessed deep into long-hooded engine bays - a gantry set up will reach. 2. Standard cantilever type engine crane. This is the type you see in the photos below and what you will see in most auto parts stores. The main advantages are the cheap cost of acquiring a standard crane and the ability to collapse and fold the crane away after use - which saves space in the workshop. Some disadvantages are lack of lifting height and reach, lower legs can be obtrusive, and the further out the telescopic pick-up area is set - the less weight you're able to lift. 3. Lowering the engine out of the engine bay from underneath the vehicle. This technique is usually achieved by use of a hydraulic lift and careful placement of stands or a dolly under the front sub frame. Once the required hoses, pipes, wiring and connections are carefully disconnected and the sub frame bolts are removed, the vehicle can be raised up on the hydraulic lift leaving behind the engine and subframe on the dolly. This technique is usually used on compact transverse cars when it is too tight and awkward to remove it through the hood opening. One downside to this procedure is the vehicle is stuck on the hoist and cannot be moved or pushed into a corner due to having no sub frame/wheels. Fun fact: If you have seen how a vehicle is assembled on the manufacturer production line, the last technique is actually the reverse of the procedure they use when installing the vehicles engine!
18.01.2022 And the renovations continue... The automotive repair trade is a forever evolving industry, and to be the number #1 independent Mercedes-Benz repairer in WA, MB Star Motors must grow with it. After renovating our office and parking facilities the past few years, our focus has now returned to the workshop. ... Midsummer heat is just around the corner, so after 6 years it was time to close off the open void to the office ceiling space and insulate the internal West facing wall. This will prevent heat from radiating through as the sun beats down from mid-day to sunset and will stop our fans from sucking hot air out of the void and blowing it into the workshop. As an added bonus, it looks very aesthetically pleasing! A huge shout out to Nathan Kareko and his team @atlas_carpentry_and_enclosures for doing a phenomenal job and working tirelessly over the weekend to not interrupt MB Stars trading hours. He comes highly recommended by us and I think the photos speak for themselves!
17.01.2022 This gorgeous Mercedes-Benz R129 500SL was recently purchased by a lucky customer from the Eastern States. MB Star Motors performed a pre-purchase inspection for him while it was for sale here in Perth. He was so impressed with our comprehensive report that he decided to have us rectify all issues and get the vehicle roadworthy and ready for a DOT inspection before it was freighted across to it's new home.... The team did a fantastic job with the 500SL and we're pleased to hear it has arrived safely and our customer is over the moon with his new ride. 15.01.2022 How good does this OG M156 powered ML63 look with it's blacked out front grill!? Have you ever wondered what your Mercedes-Benz would look like with a black grill, but can't bring yourself to paint over a perfectly good condition chrome finish, that's probably worth thousands of dollars to replace if you change your mind? If the thought has crossed your mind, MB Star Motors has a few solutions for you.... As you might already know, AMG and other hi-end model grills are rarer, unique and very costly to buy. Check out your local wrecker or online classifieds and try to find a used grill from a lower-spec model that will fit your vehicle. Another option would be to find a cheap replica online, this way you can stash your genuine grill aside and go to town on the cheap one. If it doesn't work out, or you don't like the new look, your original grill is safe and sound! MBStar Motors 1/10 Macadam Place BALCATTA WA 6021 08 9240 6633 [email protected] www.mbstarmotors.com.au
13.01.2022 Take a look at these gorgeous diamond pleated nappa leather seats by Designo. I love the contrast between the modern luxury of a G-Wagen interior - which is basically a Mercedes-Benz E and C-Class "parts bin special", to the rugged, militaristic styling of its exterior - where its lineage can be traced as far back as 1979! One day we will have our MB Star Motors workshop car/G-Wagen. .. One day ... Enjoy your weekend folks! 09.01.2022 Cabriolet or Convertible? The word "cabriolet" originated in France in the early 1800s where a two seater horse drawn cart had a folding roof that could be drawn over the two occupants when the weather took a turn for the worse. The word "convertible" refers to an automobile that has a folding/retractable roof and is more commonly used in today's industry. ... All we can say for certain is there's only one thing better than an AMG exhaust note - an AMG exhaust note with the top down! 06.01.2022 MB Star Motors has a Youtube channel! It's still in its infancy stage (well, let's be honest here, we're great at fixing Mercedes-Benz, but have a looong way to go producing videos ). Please check us out anyway, have a laugh and feel free to leave some feedback. For now, there are only a few videos up that were recorded last year, but we're working towards making some more content for everyone to enjoy and get an inside look at what goes on here at the workshop. ... We also have an M156 AMG V8 powered workshop project car that will be announced shortly and what better way to document the build than by video upload to YouTube? We look forward to hearing your thoughts! MB Star Motors 1/10 Macadam Place BALCATTA WA 6021 08 9240 6633 [email protected] www.mbstarmotors.com.au https://youtu.be/n9sGJWQ8j6Q
06.01.2022 "The Beast" If you haven't seen the US TV commercial for the Mercedes-Benz W211 E55 AMG I suggest you check it out on YouTube - it's hilariously absurd but also very accurate! https://youtu.be/xMENRzUBB58... The team here at MB Star Motors all agree that the E55 Kompressor is one of the top 5 (if not top 3) greatest models to come out of the AMG line up. The car pictured below is a pristine 80,000km example that we are so proud and happy to be maintaining over the last few years. 05.01.2022 Let's just take a minute to geek out and appreciate the Mercedes-Benz C215 pillar-less doors and the incredible engineering behind them. There are so many movin...g parts working in unison it's very easy to miss it at a glance. Aside from gullwing and scissor doors I think these are one of the coolest door designs out there. 04.01.2022 Classic, Elegance and Avantgarde. What does it all mean? If you own a Mercedes Benz from the mid 1990s to mid 2000s, you may have noticed a small badge on the exterior of the vehicle that says either 'Classic', 'Elegance' or 'Avantgarde'; these are the different levels of trim designated to each vehicle. Classic is a basic and robust trim level with less woodgrain or aluminum in the interior, and more exposed plastic on the exterior such as B pillar trims and door handles.... Elegance features more woodgrain trims in the interior along with exterior chrome strips that follow the lines of the bumpers and around the car. It is also distinguishable by its colour coded exterior door handles and higher quality plastic trims on the B pillars. Avantgarde is the highest spec of trim normally reserved for AMG and other high end models. It has all of the same features as Elegance, but usually with a dark birds eye maple woodgrain or sometimes machined aluminum interior trim, and beautiful blue tinted windows (Classic and Elegance have a light shade of green). 03.01.2022 Blacking out your badges can drastically change the appearance of your vehicle for very little cost. Most black badges can be purchased online and swapped out with your existing badges. If you have the patience, another option is to paint your current ones, or use a rubberised "Plasti dip" coating. Painting will not be reversable but Plasti dip is known for its ability to peel away easily if you change your mind. ... A great tip when removing your badging is to measure the placement of the badge before you remove it, or better yet, tape off the area around the badge with masking tape - this will make refitting and aligning the new badge much easier. If you're enjoying the new blacked out look here are a few budget friendly ideas to help you take it one step further - dark tinted windows, black vinyl roof wrap, black out exhaust tips, black out grill, black out chrome trim, tinted tail lamps and if you really want the ultimate blacked-out look - black wheels! 03.01.2022 Wow! First of all, you guys are awesome! Regarding our 10th Anniversary from the previous post, the team at MB Star Motors was captivated by your positivity, kind words, and reactions, so again, we thank you all! 02.01.2022 Now, THIS is our idea of a "grocery getter"! The term grocery getter is often definedas "a vehicle that lacks style and performance, but as a trade-off has superior practicality and use-ablity- usually an SUV or Station Wagon". Well, clearly AMG disagreed with that definition as the C43 has it all and makes carting the shopping around a whole lot more exciting!... The Mercedes-Benz S205 C43 AMG V6 bi-turbo estate offers a9-speedtransmission, Mercedes 4-Matic all-wheel-drive, 4.9 seconds 0-100km/h acceleration, and absolutely tremendous styling. 01.01.2022 ThicC43 AMG! As of 2016 Mercedes-Benz now offer a 4-seater cabriolet (aka. convertible) in their C-class range. We really dig the fat body-kit and styling of the AMG version. Check it out!
