25.01.2022 Did you know that Lindy Lee’s early works were inspired by her first visit to Europe in 1976 at age 22? Making a work with multiple copies was a way of exploring the idea of what it means to make an original work of art. This led her to think about her own ‘authenticity’ as an Australian Chinese woman, growing up between cultures, and began her exploration of her identity through her art. Plan a day trip to the MCA this weekend, we are open from 10am5pm. #LindyLee #ilovesydn...ey Lindy Lee is supported by Strategic Sponsor Destination NSW and Major Partner Telstra. 23.01.2022 ‘Anywhere but here: MCA Primavera Acquisitions’ is now showing in our Level 1 South gallery. The exhibition draws from the MCA’s collection of works by artists who have participated in Primavera, and responds to the coronavirus outbreak. ‘Anywhere but here’ borrows its title from a work by Matthew Griffin. As a throwaway statement, it’s something any one of us might mutter under our breath in the present moment. Restlessness is one of many responses we could land on, as our e...motions fluctuate along with the news cycle. Experience it for yourself, we are open Tuesdays to Sundays, 10am5pm: https://bit.ly/2GKPuLW 'Anywhere but here: MCA Primavera Acquisitions' is proudly supported by @Qantas. 21.01.2022 Tucked around the corner of our gallery in Level 1 South is Matthew Griffin's work 'Anywhere but here', an artwork that reflects the experience of working from home in isolation. A plastic chair leans precariously on an op shop dolphin ornament and recalls a reclining bored white-collar worker counting down the hours. Above the sculpture, you'll notice Emma White's replicas of everyday objects that are made from modelling clay. These casual expressions, 'Time's a wasting' and 'Don't waste another minute' sustain our anxieties around time and productivity. 20.01.2022 Keg de Souza's 'Impossible Utopia' is inspired by architect Buckminster Fuller's (18951983) geodesic dome. The artist's inflatable dome is constructed from hundreds of discarded umbrella skins stitched together, with the original function of protection and shelter, like Fuller's previous design, which was a solution to the post-war housing crisis. The dome, which at present cannot be entered due to hygiene and social distancing measures, is lit from within. It points to the ...physical limitations brought about by COVID-19, which makes us acutely aware of how we are prevented from being together - something we are all missing living through a pandemic. Find out more about the work in our Stories and Ideas interview with the artist, via https://bit.ly/3515dzk. Anywhere but here: MCA Primavera Acquisitions is proudly supported by Qantas. 18.01.2022 Today, on Remembrance Day, we would like to take a moment to think about those who have given their lives in the line of duty. Cornelia Parker’s ‘War Room’ invites us to think about those who died during World War I. Some of you may remember this work is made up of the paper offcuts of poppies to mark this day. The individual holes are each an absence representing one human life. 17.01.2022 Bede Tungutalum’s art making is centred around the strong carving tradition that exists in early Tiwi contemporary art practice and continues today. He learned carving from his father, the well-known sculptor Gabriel Tungutalum. This tutini (pole) is the largest ever made by the artist and incorporates natural ochres and earth pigments sourced on Bathurst Island. Tutini are an important aspect of the traditional Pukumani (funeral) ceremony, one of two major ceremonies of grea...t significance to Tiwi culture. Pukumani is the final ritual that farewells the deceased through song and yoyi (dance) and safely sends their spirit to rest back on Country. The artist's work is now showing as part of our new Collection show, Connected: MCA Colelction. Open Tuesday to Sunday, 10am5pm. 11.01.2022 The MCA is pleased to announce that Kenan Namunjdja has won the Primavera Veolia Acquisitive Art Prize 2020. Since 2002 Veolia has annually selected one artist and work from the MCA’s 'Primavera: Young Australian Artists' showcase to add to their holdings. Namunjdja’s practice is intimately connected to his country, family and knowledge of Kuninjku cosmology and law. Namunjdja draws upon the Djang (totemic beings, sacred sites and ceremonial designs) of the Kardbam clan esta...te to create paintings and sculptures which interweave rarrk (cross-hatching) and figuration to create rhythmic compositions. From a young age, Namunjdja was trained by his father, artist Bulanj S. Namunjdja (19652018). Namunjdja continues his strong legacy while innovating with new design elements and subject matter from his mother’s lineage. 11.01.2022 [MCA Moments] ‘Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness’ was the largest exhibition of work by Edward and Nancy Reddin Keinholz in Australia and the UK since 1971. Edward Keinholz rose to prominence in the city of Los Angeles at the time of the Beat era, a rapidly developing scene later associated with the beginnings of Pop Art. The works in this exhibition contrasted the packaged soup cans and shiny new surfaces associated with the Pop Art of Warhol and Lichtenstein. The... installations and sculptures incorporate used personal items laced with memory, such as old photographs and pieces of torn cloth that confront the issues a society might choose to ignore, or shy away from. The artist’s extraordinary ability to implicate and compel the viewer to bear witness was their legacy to the new generation. Each week we are sharing some of the #MCAmoments that stick in our minds and we would love for you to share your memories too by commenting below. #YourMCA Image: Nancy Reddin Kienholz, Its Not My Fault, 2004, KIENHOLZ, MCA, 2005, image the artist; Edward and Nancy Reddin Kienholz, The Ozymandias Parade, 1985, tableau, Collection of the artists, installation view, KIENHOLZ, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, 2005, image the artists; Edward and Nancy Reddin Kienholz, The Hoerengracht, 1983-88, tableau, Collection of the artist, installation view, KIENHOLZ, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, 2005, image the artists; Edward and Nancy Reddin Kienholz, The Merry-Go-World Or Begat By Chance and the Wonder Horse Trigger, 1988-92, tableau, Collection of the artist, installation view, KIENHOLZ, Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, 2005, image the artists

09.01.2022 Have you seen the incredible process behind Lindy Lee creating her bronze works? The artist must be suited up in an armour of protective clothing, which allows her to ‘fling’ the red-hot molten bronze onto the concrete floor of the foundry, where she is casting her sculptures. This act of pouring to make the work has a random quality as she cannot control the shapes. The process of flinging the bronze and the transformation of metal into sculpture is another aspect of her exp...loration of time. Come along to see the final piece up close and wander into our Immersive Studio next door to see footage of the artist making her flung bronze works at the UAP Foundry. 09.01.2022 The story of true Ch’ien is a kan, a story that challenges thought and is used by Zen Buddhists during meditation. It is a fable about a young woman whose life takes two different paths at the same time. In one life, she resists her father’s wish to marry her to an older man and runs away with her true love Wang-Chau. Years later they return to the family only to find that her father thinks that Ch’ien took to her bed when Wang-Chau left and has lain there ever since, close ...to death. At this moment the two different versions of Ch’ien become one. For the artist, this story articulates her struggle with her ‘split’ identity: Australian and Chinese, about wanting to be one thing which requires you to leave something else behind. Slow down and experience this powerful work for yourself at the MCA. We are open all weekend, from 10am5pm. #LindyLee #ilovesydney Lindy Lee is supported by Strategic Sponsor Destination NSW and Major Partner Telstra. 07.01.2022 Did you know this work was made especially for our exhibition? In ‘Moonlight Deities’, Lindy Lee creates a shadow world where you can experience the flux and flow of time through the interplay of ephemeral shadows and solid shapes in space. 07.01.2022 Are you dancing like nobody's watching? Whether it's alone or for thousands to watch on TikTok, we've all busted a move or two during the pandemic. Hiromi Tango's, 'Dance' (2014) recalls many of the homemade dance videos that have emerged during lockdown on platforms like TikTok and Instagram. The work appeals to the therapeutic effects of movement and reflects the artist's broader interest in promoting mental and physical wellbeing. 05.01.2022 Cheeky, energetic and full of life. Dion Beasley's prints record the everyday interactions between the local 'cheeky dogs' around his home of Tennant Creek, and surrounding Mulga Camp, Lake Nash and Canteen Creek in the Northern Territory. The artist creates his drawings entirely from memory, recreating past confrontations with ease and humour, and taking great care to replicate the distinct markings of each dog. Beasley's local knowledge and strong ties to the animals and th...e community present an opportunity to rethink our own connection to place, given the current restrictions. The artist explores our connection to the cosmos, inspired by her Buddhist practice. The shape of ‘A Secret World of a Starlight Ember’ is egg-like: eggs are about beginnings the beginning of life itself. At night, the work emanates light shimmering like star dust, throwing shadows beneath it. It hovers in space, drawing people to...ward it, transforming the public space. #LindyLee #DNSW #Ilovesydney Lindy Lee is supported by Strategic Sponsor Destination NSW and Major Partner Telstra. 04.01.2022 [MCA Moments] Colour was significant in James Angus’ 2006 exhibition at the MCA, which presented an in-depth survey of his works from the mid 1990s to then. From the neutrality and timelessness of white to the use of bright colour or contrasting dark and light timbers. Each drew attention to the pure ‘objectness’ of the works of sculpture as sculpture, not an imitation of life. Does anyone remember his installation at the Sydney Opera House, alongside our exhibition? The ...inverted hot air balloon blew us away! Each week we are sharing some of the #MCAmoments that stick in our minds and we would love for you to share your memories too, tag @mca_australia or comment below. #YourMCA Image: James Angus, Rhinoceros, 1995, installation view, James Angus, MCA, 2006, Art Gallery of South Australia, gift of Helen Brown, 1996, image courtesy and the artist; James Angus, Shangri-La, 2002, installation view, Sydney Opera House Foyer, 2006, image courtesy and the artist, photograph: Greg Weight

04.01.2022 ‘It is absolutely critical that institutions create sustainable pathways for other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the arts to ensure authentic representation and interpretation of ourselves across all forms of our cultural material. This is mandatory to address the imposed identities and histories placed upon us by the dominant culture in this country.’ Clothilde Bullen, MCA Senior Curator of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Collections and Exhibitions. Together, we have reached new audiences through initiatives like our collaboration with the Tate which supported research into Australian art and the co-acquisition of work, established in 2015 via a gift from the Qantas Foundation. ‘Successful partnerships are driven by passion. Qantas has been a long-term and loyal supporter of the MCA’. Elizabeth Ann Macgregor. 01.01.2022 This powerful installation is part of ‘Lindy Lee: Moon in a Dew Drop’. It was made as a response to the death of Lindy Lee’s nephew Ben at the age of 22 and incorporates images of five generations of the artist’s family, alongside friends and beloved pets, at different moments of their lives. It is a memorial and reminder of the continuity of family, despite the tragedy of death at a young age. In this work the artist has given her nephew a place within the waves of generatio...ns.
