25.01.2022 Internal brick wall This week we completed laying recycled red bricks on two walls inside our Mallala extension. The main reason is not actually for aesthetics (although we think they look ), but is to make use of the thermal properties of bricks to help keep the home cooler in summer and warmer in winter. This building method known as ‘reverse brick veneer’ is based on the principle that heavier materials have more mass and therefore hold their temperature for longer. By having this mass inside the home, means that when the bricks heat up during winter from sunlight or heating, they will maintain that heat for longer and radiate it back into the house over time. Conversely, in summer the bricks act to help keep the interior cooler.

25.01.2022 Our Mallala project is very close to completion. We look forward to a final photo reveal soon, but in the meantime, here are some snippets of ‘almost finished’...

11.01.2022 New year project update We’re back on board after a nice break to share our first update for the year. At our Mallala extension, we’ve been working inside the old house with fresh white paint throughout and a sand & polish of the floorboards to bring out the character of the original timber. We've included some before shots to highlight the contrast.

07.01.2022 Project update The busy pre-Christmas rush is upon us and it feels even more crazy this year which is probably a reflection on 2020 in general! This update at our Mallala extension gives a preview of some bits and pieces coming together lately including tiling, internal doors, cabinetry and more. It includes some varying coloured doors we found at a salvage yard for new doorways in the old cottage - reflecting our challenge on this job of balancing the old and new. Painting is also underway

03.01.2022 Hardwood Timber Cladding This past week, we've been installing this cladding on our Mallala extension project and we absolutely love it! It's a sustainable radial sawn Australian hardwood timber, meaning the production process produces more wood from fewer trees. Not only is it natural, but it also looks . With individual boards, the install process is meticulous, but as they say, 'good things take time'. Stay tuned for the other material we'll be using on adjacent walls for contrast....
