25.01.2022 Moreland City Band Phoenix Project Pianist Joe O'Connor who has kindly left his piano at Cross Street for bands rehearsing and performing at Cross Street to use, is performing tonight at Jazzlab for the Melbourne Jazz Co-op.Sun 14th July @ 8:30 pm - 11:00 pm The Jazzlab, 27 Leslie Street (off Brunswick Street) Brunswick, Victoria 3056 Australia $15 $20 Laurence PIke... This special double bill features a coming together of innovative artists from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. Time and again, Brisbane has been a breeding ground for inventive improvisers who choose the path less travelled. Svoboda/OConnor/Green brings together three such musicians who turned to jazz esoterica in their formative years: drummer Tim Green (Brisbane), double bassist Hellen Svoboda (Maestricht, Netherlands) and pianist Joe OConnor (Melbourne). The trios lyrical approach is inspired by the innovations of Paul Bley, Garry Peacock, Paul Motion, See more

25.01.2022 Saturday MARCH 23: HELP KEEP CROSS STREET A COMMUNITY VENUE: Saturday 23rd of March sees an epic musical team up as the legendary Ray Pereira, Dan Nilsson and The Offtopics combine to raise money for one of the last true community spaces in Melbourne. With a history going back to the late 19th Century The Moreland City Band Hall is the home of countless musicians across genres that range from Big Band Jazz to Balls-to-the-Wall Blues Rock. The hall is a rehearsal and performa...nce space with recording facilities. It's the site where Moreland's annual Christmas Carols program is cooked up before being presented at Coburg Lake. Not only jazz greats like Scott Tinkler, Ben Gillespie and the late, great Jim Cuomo lay a claim to this space - in fact - if you've ever wanted to play an instrument and you don't even know which part of the sax you're supposed to strum, the Moreland City Band will hook you up with an instrument and a band. They do all of this, largely for FREE! So with all of that in mind Ray, Polash and Dan decided to cook up a fundraiser for the hall. This will be a great night of music with Ray and Drumnation opening the show with a magnificent demonstration of Afro-Lankan beats. They'll be followed by Dan Nilsson and the Prodigal Sons' own brand of bluesy goodness. Capping the night off will be The Offtopics. You'll want to make sure you're wearing your dancing thongs for their set as they combine funk, soul, ska and rocksteady with a love of all things local. 6pm: Doors open 7pm: Ray Pereira and Drumnation 8pm: Dan Nilsson and the Prodigal Sons 9pm: The Offtopics Entry is a cheap as chips $10 and the bar prices are traditionally very low. All proceeds to our beloved band hall! See Less Music Recent Posts The Offtopics Added a photo February 23, 2019 at 4:11 AM Read More Ray Pereira Hello everyone . A group of my advanced drumming students will be performing at this event to raise funds for our band hall. This is a valuable community asset and your help to keep it going will be appreciated. 01.01.2022 This Friday at The Moldy Fig Due to a family bereavement The Offtopics will not be performing this Friday. To fill in for us will be the Not From Here trio playing a fine mixture of blues, jazz and pop music from 9pm. Not From Here include Dan Nilson on guitar and vocals, Howard Norsetter on trumpet and Ben Harmsen on bass. Friends of The Offtopics will recognize Howard of course, as our very own trumpah tootler and you may also remember Dan from The Prodigal Sons when they... played with us at The Moreland City Band Hall fundraiser earlier this year. The earlier part of the evening will continue as planned with Polash playing a mix of originals and New Orleans classics by Dr John, Allen Toussaint and maybe even Lee Dorsey! Special guest Ella Blackburn aka EIJSMA will sing like a golden-throated nightingale at 8pm. She's the one you don't want to miss!
