23.01.2022 This month we raise awareness for Shocktober and the important role Defibrilators play in saving the lives of those suffering cardiac arrest. If defibrillated within the first minute of collapse, a victim's chances for survival are close to 90 percent. For every minute that defibrillation is delayed, survival decreases by 7 to 10 percent. If it is delayed by more than 10 minutes, the chance of survival in adults is less than 5 percent. Although the survival rate continues to improve, with 89/100 Australian women diagnosed with invasive breast cancer surviving 5 or more years beyond diagnosis, it still remains the most common form of Cancer in Australian Women. Take the time this month to be breast aware and know the signs:... - new lumps or lumpiness, especially if it's only in one breast - a change in the size or shape of your breast - change to the nipple, such as crusting, ulcer, redness or inversion - a nipple discharge that occurs without squeezing - a change in the skin of your breast such as redness or dimpling - an unusual pain that doesn't go away. Most of these changes aren’t due to breast cancer, but it’s important to see your doctor without delay if you notice any of the above. The sun produces ultraviolet rays (UV), which cause sunburn and are the main cause of skin cancer in Australia. UV rays can also cause premature ageing and eye damage due to overexposure without protection. During the summer make sure to check the UV Ratings each day to know when to apply sunsceen, and what level of SPF protection to use.
