25.01.2022 This is an excellent article as is much of the Harvard Business Review material. In particular the article uses Winnacotts notion of holding to apply to a broader systemic level. Its normally a concept used in a psychological space but his stuff is certainly applicable at a broader level. Im a huge Wnnacott fan - he was a paediatrician and pysychotherapist from last century

24.01.2022 This doesnt just apply to social workers. Ive always had a thing about leaving well whether a social worker or any job for that matter. Leave on your own terms as best you can; if its a bad ending get whatever closure you can, close off ends as best you can and hold your head high. Try not to carry bad blood into your next job or chapter. Keep your professional boundaries in tact, manage the transition, get some air and go for the next chapter feeling crisp

24.01.2022 This may be helpful for those of us (like me) that have speaking gigs

16.01.2022 A good read - burnout (dont like the term) is generally more contextual or systemic rather than due to individual vulnerabilities

16.01.2022 Labels - sometimes helpful, sometimes not. Its important that we exercise careful clinical judgement about how we accept them and how we use them on a case by case basis; context is a critical factor in this process

15.01.2022 Have a look at the video on this site. I very much relate to this and you might too. Weve all had a bit more isolation of late but somehow the vibe of this clip massages my soul https://www.mindful.org/how-loneliness-helps-us-heal/

14.01.2022 A classic book and a seminal text from my social work student days. Good old fashioned radical material. I still have my copy

14.01.2022 Also for clients we might work with

14.01.2022 I like the idea of preferment. Never did like the idea of retirement. A good article for those of us as later career professionals. Even good for anyone on the life journey to think about transitions down the track

06.01.2022 An important article and Ive posted it before but for any of us working with clients its essential to be aware of how clients engage (or not). Its relevant for any helping profession.

05.01.2022 Mentoring relationships of various forms are important at all stages of career development in any profession - even at the latter end. Our mentoring needs change over the journey

03.01.2022 PTSD Awareness Day. So much more awareness and acknowledgement now compared with thirty years ago when I started counselling work with veterans

03.01.2022 Attention Social Work colleagues who are members of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW) - I am standing for election to the Board of Directors. I seek your support and please vote as soon as you get the voting package on line tomorrow. Please read my candidate statement but basically I have three strategies 1. I want to build up the branches to ensure we are truly a membership organisation. ... 2. I’d like to see market research into the wider community and stakeholders then get a sophisticated marketing strategy on the breadth and effectiveness of social work in all areas of our profession. 3. Undertake the review and revitalise the Australian College of Social Work. Together we can do this
