Posted @withrepost @world Millions of people in Ethiopia took part in a nationwide initiative to fight deforestation and climate change by planting more than 350 million trees in a single day on Monday. Many schools and government offices were closed for the day as people were urged to take part in the program, which is part of prime minister Abiy Ahmed’s Green Legacy initiative to grow 4 billion trees in the country thi...s summer by encouraging every citizen to plant at least 40 seedlings. In the early 20th century, about one-third of Ethiopia was covered in forests, but that number had dropped to just 4% by 2000, according to the United Nations. The country lost 2.6 million hectares of forest, or more than 10,000 square miles, from 1990 to 2015, according to UN figures. Officials say Monday was the largest one-day tree-planting effort in history.
