24.01.2022 Didn't realise 470s were foiling now!
23.01.2022 Bliss. Over 35 boats on the course for our first race of the year. A class, taipans, moths, skeetas, nikkis, contenders, windsurfers, sabres, lasers, aeros, tasars, paper tigers and a minnow. Thanks to the many volunteers that make this possible and thanks to all members for their COVID safe compliance. A little more wind wouldn't hurt.

21.01.2022 Fingers crossed that we may be sailing again soon. In the meantime we've been discovering great sailing videos and podcasts to help fill the void. Here are a few worth looking at/listening to: 1. Australia v Spain - London Olympics 2012 women's medal race. We're missing the Olympics so might as well watch past events. We love a good match race and this was an off-the-edge-of-your-seat race (literally). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlJlkuLUFQY&t=2s. Tom Slingsby's medal r...ace in the Laser at London was also a ripper match race within a fleet race! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOFWQbZYK7s 2. BBC Sailing Guide with Shirley Robertson. This is the best ever 7 minute introduction to racing for anyone new to the sport or simply curious to know how it all works. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WvduRAdD46g. I have to add that Shirley, a former gold medalist, also does a fantastic podcast - http://shirleyrobertson.com/podcast/. Her latest episodes are hour long interviews with extraordinary past Olympic champions from around the globe. A MUST listen for anyone who loves the pinnacle of dinghy racing. And her interview with Nick Maloney is - crikey - mind blowing. Yep. Must listen. 3. Two Boys and a Boat A 1958 film about two kids dream of sailing a VJ on Sydney Harbour. We've posted it before, but it really is delightful and is guaranteed to evoke nostalgic feelings for simpler times as kids messing about in boats. https://www.youtube.com/watch 4. Windsurfer LT clinic with Nick Bez. A serious recommendation for the McCrae windsurfers (I think at least 6 of you now). This is a great video that tells you EVERYTHING you need to know about sailing a Windsurfer LT. Fast. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCUu55v7qRU 5. Life in 28 feet: 2 years on a littleboat. Need an escape? This lovely film by Maya and her husband illustrates a life many of us dream of (particularly while in lockdown). Idyllic low cost cruising as a way of life when you're young. Lots of short videos on their channel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycbNQV9oRL4. For ultra low cost dinghy cruising, take a look at Roger Barnes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hij5HWAwsbY. It's pretty quirky and comes with a warning - Roger's sailing is the extreme opposite of extreme sailing, and his other videos would be classed as 'slow tv'! Good for relaxation when you're very tired. Bonus recommendation: Maiden is a documentary on Netflix about the first all-women boat in the Whitbread Round-the-World race, skippered by Tracy Edwards. A fascinating insight into the tenacity required to a) race a boat around the planet and b) tackle sexism in the 80's. It's a brilliant documentary and a great reminder that sailing should be a great sport for everyone. Over to you - what are your sailing video/podcast recommendations to get us through the next two weeks? (Post by Scott, General Committee member and sailing/windsurf instructor)
20.01.2022 Another great interview hosted by McCrae member Stephen Brayshaw and Ronstan. This time with the fastest sailor on earth, Paul Larsen! Paul talks about the path to smashing the world record with 65.45 knots (121.1 km/hr) in 2012, including what he learnt from his friends at McCrae with C class cats, the Yellow Pages Endeavour world record and the Macquarie Innovation. https://youtu.be/uJ_A9-ddNKU Enjoy!
20.01.2022 It appears kiteboarding will be permitted with changes to level 4 restrictions on Sunday (and we believe this is likely to include windsurfing too). We'll provide more information as it comes to hand! https://www.kiteboardingaus.com.au//important-covid-19-re/
20.01.2022 Congratulations to Casey Imeneo on recieving the VIS 2020 Coaches Award for sailing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZ9QxTFhgd0&t=1196s
19.01.2022 Thinking about racing a windsurfer? We know a few club members are interested. Here are some training tips from Nick Bez (Parkdale Yacht Club), current heavy weight world champion. https://www.sailing.org.au//windsurfing-fitness-tips-fro/
18.01.2022 Our COVIDsafe plan is in place and members within 25 km are back for informal racing in a pretty fresh southerly! Special thanks to Vice Commodore Scott Cunningham for ensuring on-site covid safe measures are in place for today (and texting me this photo 30 minutes ago). The club's COVIDSafe working group is meeting each Thursday night to refine the plan and relaunch more club functions in the coming weeks. If you want to visit the club or sail, please check our COVID page - https://mccraeyc.com.au/covid/ To keep up to date at all times, make sure you have the SailorApp on your phone.
18.01.2022 Thanks to the big crowd that rocked up for today's working bee. The weather was sublime, the company was good, the mood was relaxed AND (although you may not believe it looking at the photos) we got stuff done! We particularly thank the critical figures in today's operation - the canteen crew led by Margaret & Gordon Crossland and our energetic yard master Greg Newman.
17.01.2022 RIP Ann Lorimer and condolences to all the family. Thank you Ann for your long and dedicated service to our club. In loving memory from all of us at McCrae Yacht Club.
17.01.2022 Sail GP are looking for offers from ladies. Any takers?
17.01.2022 Sailing School begins next Saturday December 5th. We have two more spots for the Try Sailing group for 7 to 10 year olds. If you live locally and think sailing could be the sport for your children and family then this is your opportunity to try! Our Training and Development Program takes young children from beginner and teaches competence in racing into their teenage years. https://www.trybooking.com/BFPOX
17.01.2022 Casey Imeneo is training with the Australian Laser team somewhere on the east coast: The East Coast tour Little did I know that once I got off the water after sailing downwind from SSCBC to McCrae Yacht Club I would be packing everything up in 2hrs to hit the Hume Hwy. With the government announcing border closures between NSW and Victoria as of midnight the 6th of July. I had originally planned to fly up a week later, but if I wanted to be at the training camp I would have... to scrap that and drive up instead asap. After a stressful few days and a rocky start I have since been training with the National Team for the past 6 weeks. Our first camp started off at Coffs Harbour, the venue provided some decent barrels making the launching situation eventful and whales cruising along side us up the coast. The weeks consisted of long day’s road cycling in the morning and sailing from midday onwards with Tristan Brown coaching. From Coffs Harbour we made our way up to Brisbane, after another successful border crossing and declaration later we started a week of sailing off RQYS while managing to fit in a local QLA mid winter regatta on the weekend which saw 26 radials on the start line. I’m now currently further north in Mooloolaba where a majority of the Australian Sailing Team have been training over the pass month including the laser men, 49ers, FX & Nacras. We’ve had the opportunity to have Tom Burton coaching us here along with Ash Brunning and Nokka Anthony Nossiter. With the unfortunate announcement of the Australian Laser Nationals being postponed, I encourage you all to keep setting mirco goals in the interim to help progress your sailing ambitions. This is the perfect time to improve on those skills you wouldn’t normally focus on so much. Some examples: Rules and weather knowledge Tactics and when to apply them best Fitness / hiking strength, how long can you hike for? Watch some sailing footage or even tracking from previous World Cup events / Medal races
16.01.2022 We reckon this sums up McCrae Yacht Club pretty well. What do you think?... https://www.sail-world.com///The-great-grass-roots-revival
15.01.2022 Big jump! Sailing never stops evolving. This is called 'wingfoiling'. It combines a small surfboard riding on a foil with a hand held inflatable wing sail.
15.01.2022 Here's a fabulous interview hosted by our own Stephen Brayshaw with sailing legends, Tom Slingsby and Tom Burton. There's lots to learn here so listen carefully! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkyewliWIRI
14.01.2022 Presentation night is coming up soon and promises to be a great evening! Please follow the link to book as soon as possible! https://www.mysailingclub.com.au/event/GHJOO
12.01.2022 Hello Aussie sailors! Have you secured your place to compete in the Ronstan Australia Day Weekend Regatta - Join the fun! https://mccraeyc.com.au/regattas/20#australiadayweekend #Sailingisfun #RonstanSailing #SailOn #AustraliaDayWeekend
12.01.2022 The online AGM with a skeleton, socially distanced committee members about to begin. It's been a strange year with bushfires, often unfavourable weather and then COVID. Thanks to all members attending today by zoom, and thanks to the MANY volunteers who made 19/20 as successful as it could be.
12.01.2022 Due to on-going restrictions, McCrae YC is postponing the 2020 Victorian Catamaran Championships for 12 months. While this is not what we want to do, we do not believe it is viable to run an event of this nature with the restrictions which are likely to be in place. The regatta will be back in its usual last week of November slot for 2021, and we plan to make up for this year’s absence.... If you still want to get your regatta fix, why not come along to the Ronstan Australia Day Regatta hosted by McCrae. 12 races over 4 days for only $70! Details and entry are at the following link: https://mccraeyc.com.au/regattas/2020-ronstan-regatta/
11.01.2022 Just because there is no racing it doesn't mean you can't do some training in the meantime. Here's some footage of Glenn Ashby, Peter Burling and Blair Tuke training at McCrae a few years ago. Includes a typically sublime McCrae sunset at the end. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v80uH1I3oMU
10.01.2022 When it's been a long time, even national champions lose the ability to judge the minimum wind needed to sail.
09.01.2022 Yesterday was the end of McCrae's 20/21 season. Well done to all sailors who raced in the beautiful squally rain yesterday and big thanks to Club Captain Al Watson & team for our last race (and the season). Great to see pre-season training well underway today for 21/22.
08.01.2022 10-15Knot southerly 2pm Saturday. Club sailing for those within 25Km. Wish I could be there Commodore Knorr
08.01.2022 Dear members, Please find the latest advice from Australian Sailing on when and how you can get back on the water... REGIONAL VICTORIA (under step 3) Overnight sailing and accommodation on your yacht is allowed both recreationally and competitively, only if the crew are from the same household or from their nominated household bubble. If you live in regional Victoria then sailing is only permissible within Regional Victoria, you cannot sail into Metro Melbourne waters.... METRO MELBOURNE (under step 2) Australian Sailing is happy to announce that single handed sailing or with someone (maximum 5 household members) from your household bubble is now permissible as part of their 2 hours of exercise within an unpowered vessel. You must adhere to the following: - This is allowed in an OTB dinghy. - This is allowed in a yacht that does NOT have a motor. If your yacht has a motor you cannot use it for sailing exercise. This applies even if you do not turn your motor on. - The 2 hours includes travel to and from the activity - The 2 hours includes rigging and de-rigging - You must stay within your 5km radius - You must wear face masks while on land - You must keep 1.5 meters distance from others Boat yards We are currently getting clarification on exactly what activities will be permissible under the safety inspections and maintenance criteria. As soon as we have this detail we will update the Victorian sailing community. Please not as information comes to hand we will update the Victorian page of the AS COVID hub. https://www.sailingresources.org.au/covid-19/vic/
07.01.2022 Dear Members, Since 1961, we’ve had some disastrous Opening Days. From storms and gales to no wind at all, rain, heatwaves and all in between, we’ve had some doozies. But we weren’t prepared for 2020 Welcome to Opening Day! ... I’m claiming 2020’s Opening Day to be the worst one yet. Who would have thought our world would be struck with a global pandemic? And worst of all, we can’t go for a sail or even enjoy a beer together. At least you won’t have to put up with long boring speeches and have to mumble the national anthem awkwardly on the front lawn. I hope we will be able to get together shortly and enjoy some sailing. We definitely deserve it. Can’t wait to see you at the club ASAP so we can all check out the new entrance and facility upgrades. Cheers, Jon "Commodore" Knorr
05.01.2022 Don't forget to book for our presentation night on Saturday May 22nd! This will be a really fun event to get together and celebrate the past two seasons! Book here now https://www.mysailingclub.com.au/event/GHJOO
05.01.2022 As of 1800 hours on 2/8/2020 , all sailing and club activities are cancelled until further notice due to the the State of Disaster declared by the Victorian Government. Hopefully we will all be sailing in 6 weeks as per the Club Program soon to be published.
03.01.2022 Here's a great article from our very own John Jagger on not dragging the rudder.
03.01.2022 Unfortunately Sail Country 2020 has been cancelled. They are planning to run the event again in 2021. There is a link to an explanatory email in the main text below.
03.01.2022 Having a nice time in Switzerland sailing their 'Skeetas'. Who is envious???
03.01.2022 Many of us still can't get to the club, but this footage might whet your appetite for next weekend! You're looking at Training Centre Principal Murray O'Brien with his brand new Sabre skipping over crystal clear water at McCrae last weekend. https://youtu.be/CTIk_s_bT3M We also need to say thanks to Jenny and Peter Merritt for again providing a safe racing course this week. We've heard on the grapevine that you're enjoying dolphins jumping off your bow this afternoon!
02.01.2022 Happy Mothers Day to all the McCYC mums! Very happy to hear some are celebrating the day at the club on their windsurfers.
