25.01.2022 Customised desk. IKEA Karlby Bench-top, Alex Drawers and three legs. The extra leg in the middle is to help support weight from computers and the like.

23.01.2022 Utensil rail installed in a kitchen. The hooks can slide to one side and it can also be used to hang wash cloths, tea towels and hand towels. Rail kit is from IKEA, who do not always supply mounting screws and wall plugs, but I always like to upgrade the hardware with quality stainless steel screws in wet areas.

20.01.2022 Wet weather means workshop time. Many of my tools are vintage or antique. Most of those were in quite poor condition and required restoration work in some form. In particular is this Falcon-Pope No.4-1/2 Heavy Smoothing Plane, which was very rusty and had problems with the frog mechanism. I swapped in a spare mechanism from a written-off Stanley No.7 and it actually works extremely well. Just had to strip down what was left of some very shabby paint and varnish and redo the f...inish. Of course, rebuilding and restoring your own tools means that you know exactly how everything goes together and how it all works. The No.4-1/2 Plane is about 70 years old and will now give good service for the rest of my lifetime and will probably still be a perfectly serviceable tool for my great-grandchildren.

20.01.2022 Big day tomorrow! - Complete a plasterboard repair. - Install a new door. - Remove old carpet for disposal.... - Install Skirting Boards. All in different homes in different suburbs!

19.01.2022 "Tilly" had a bath this evening. I think she enjoyed more than I did.

18.01.2022 Dismantled an old clothesline for a client. Will return with a reciprocating saw to cut it up and take it to scrap metal recyclers.

15.01.2022 Before and After shots of a tool restoration/refurbishment. Should be good for at least a hundred years.

14.01.2022 "Backyard is getting a bit overgrown." The customer said. He wasn't kidding either! It was more than waist-high in parts!

14.01.2022 More shelves going up. Takes a lot of careful measuring and marking and just a little bit of luck to get an installation like this right. Main issue here is that you can get "blow out" where a hole for the mounting plugs and screws just chips out. There may be a hard stone in the concrete block or just some irregularity which makes it impossible to put a hole where you want it to go.

13.01.2022 Yesterday and today I was painting an apartment for a client in Granville. These two bedrooms and the hallway had to be done ASAP in preparation for new carpets going in soon. The rest of the apartment is getting similarly treated. The hallway was tricky due to a number of doors and corners which always make a painting job take much longer for cutting in around various borders. The cutting in alone took about 60-70% of the time to get the place painted.

10.01.2022 One new bathroom towel rail installed. Old towel rail hole given some filler. At the same time the opportunity was taken to fill other holes such as from the toilet roll holder and the old bathroom mirror. At some stage in the future the bathroom walls will he repainted, but that is a project for another time.

10.01.2022 Primer than two coats of concrete floor paint for a garage in Northmead.

09.01.2022 Before and After. A lot more of the cement render on the wall flaked off without much provocation. It has been patched with new render, and a fine top coat filler to make the damage about 90% invisible. This was not a one-day job! Several visits were required, but I was also doing lots of other repair work on the same property.

08.01.2022 Whilst I am normally an indoor handyman, I have recently done some lawn maintenance for my mother. It seems that lawn beetles are behind the patchiness of the back lawn, so after mowing it, I applied some lawn beetles and grub killer. Have to wait a week or two before putting on some lawn fertiliser, grass seed and the like to make the lawn full and green once again.

08.01.2022 Lawn repair round 2, after one week's progress. Probably another week of daily watering before I give is a gentle mowing.

06.01.2022 One towel rail installed on tiled bathroom wall. Installation on tiles requires the use of a specific diamond-tipped drill, with wall plugs and stainless steel screws to hold into place.

06.01.2022 Round 3 of lawn top dressing and seeding. 2 weeks of care and growth. A few patches to fill still but not bad considering it was basically all dead a year ago from the drought.

05.01.2022 Years before I started a Handyman business, I was doing this sort of thing for family. Repainting Mum's house several years ago. The maroon architraves and 90's-era faux country wallpaper strips are now just a distant memory. The house now feels a lot bigger and more airy with "Snowy Mountains Half" on the walls and "Vivid White" trims.

04.01.2022 Just tallied up some numbers and during the month of August, I drove 1,776km around Sydney, averaging 88.8km per work day to service various clients, pick up materials and hardware, etc. Driving "Tilly" for work purposes made up 86% of total kms travelled. That's life for a mobile business I suppose.

04.01.2022 Early signs of success in patching up Mum's back lawn. I am not a gardener, but I may be adding some basic lawn maintenance to my repertoire if this works out well.

04.01.2022 Mr. M. in Greystanes asked me to make some repairs. The rails all had rotten ends and were falling off. Today was removing the rotten timbers and my next visit will be to install replacements and do some painting.

03.01.2022 Exactly what you want to see when you install a floating shelf.

02.01.2022 Ms. M from Smithfield asked me if I could do anything to clean up her driveway and footpaths. I told her that a thorough pressure-wash should remove the 20-odd years worth of grime that had accumulated. Took all day, but the result was worth it. I currently have a Spring Special where this service is a flat $38.50/hr including GST. This rather extensive clean took 5 hours, but most typical homes could be done in about 3-4hrs. Spring Special of $38.50/hr (GST incl.) is for Sep...tember and October only and for pressure washing service only. Typical cost of driveway and paths pressure washing somewhere around $120 to $200 depending on area and level of dirt. (Usual rate is $150+GST minimum charge, includes call-out and up to 2hrs work, $60+GST per hour thereafter.) Usual Full-day rate $350+GST

02.01.2022 Yes, the workshop is overdue for another clean out. But whilst we are waiting for that to happen, some newly-restored hand planes. No.4 and 4-1/2 Smoothing Planes of the Stanley-Bailey type. No.5 Candian-made Stanley. This one has received the vintage rubber knob and tote and has been set up as a fore-plane for rough and heavy work. And a picture of the whole Stanley-Bailey family.

02.01.2022 Installed some skirting boards. This is one of those jobs that looks like it could be done quickly but it always takes a lot of time to measure, mark, test fit, trim, paint, install then put a little caulking in to take up some of the small gaps. That said, it makes it feel more like a room and less like a dressed up basement storage area!
