25.01.2022 Karen's been busy in the kitchen and has produced a wonderful creamy chicken & vegetable soup, and a minestrone soup, as well as carbonara pasta, for what looks likely to be a cold, wet and dreary weekend. Pictures are savoury toast and berry & white chocolate muffins. Also available will be caramel & choc chip cookies. So give your taste-buds a workout and top everything off with a superb coffee.
22.01.2022 A South Burnie member lost her new skirt after training last Thursday night, possibly inadvertently dropping it in the car park. She had only just purchased it. If anyone picked it up could you please deliver it to the office or kiosk, and we will pass it on. Thanks.
22.01.2022 Congratulations to City Marians women and Burnie Baptist men for taking out the GNWHL and GNL grand finals today in two fiercely contested matches. To South Burnie Div. 2 men and City Div. 3 women for their grand final victories also. Was a great crowd at Burnie to witness a couple of tight games.
20.01.2022 Hey all. A reminder to all match managers in charge of night games. It is your responsibility to ensure ground lights are extinguished no more than 10 minutes after a game. Could you please ensure this is done. Thanks.
20.01.2022 The day all hockey players have been waiting for is now upon us, so we hope you have your gear smelling sweet (including shin pads) and are eager to go. When you enter the complex, we ask that you register your name and mobile number at the station provided at the start of the covered walkway. All other requirements because of Covid will be in place, and we ask that you show patience and respect for those around you.... For the resumption of hockey, it has been an enormous responsibility on a select few to have pulled all this together, and we want to recognise their efforts, and those of our colleagues at Smithton and Meercroft Park. We ask that all protocols are adhered to, and welcome any feedback. Let's play it hard and fair. Good luck to all.
20.01.2022 McKenna Park is seeking expressions of interest from those interested in managing the complex kiosk for the 2020 season. A letter or email stating your interest can be submitted to the secretary, Viv Hancock, by October 31
19.01.2022 The tremendous amount of work done at McKenna Park in the past 12 months continues, with the concrete paths to the canteen carpeted and now painted. The canteen has also had some alterations carried out, as well as a a paint job. As always, your commitment and assistance, Jim, in a total voluntary role, is so greatly appreciated.
17.01.2022 We are wondering if anyone has any mates at McKenna Park who might have opened their wallet for the first time in a long time last night. These were discovered just outside the kiosk ... Kyle Webb????
15.01.2022 The McKenna Park Regional Hockey Centre is tremendously saddened by the passing of hockey stalwart Wayne Chunky Edmunds. A life-member of the South Burnie Hawks, and a well-respected member of the wider Tasmanian hockey fraternity, Wayne was a valuable team member and a thoughtful and respected administrator of both the club and McKenna Park. He always sought balance, was business-like with a great sense of fairness and equity, and had a wonderful, dry sense of humour. McKenna Park offers it sincere condolences to Carol, Kurt, Emma and Norah, Sam and Ben, and Wayne’s extended family.
14.01.2022 Just a reminder to players about access to keys in relation to the operation of lights, water, scoreboard etc.
14.01.2022 A couple of the soccer lads after their game this morning spent ages kicking the ball, then were happy to involve the youngest future star in a few pointers.
12.01.2022 It is time for a check-in to make sure those users of McKenna Park _ mostly members of the hockey fraternity _ are dealing with all the stresses and strains of this most unique time. Having spoken to many players via telephone, of course, they have all said that not only are they missing game action, but the social interactions that take place after competition. As for when there might be play, we are in the hands of State and Federal governments, and Hockey Tasmania. At thi...s stage, we are due for an update but as yet there is nothing in the wind. I imagine HT may possibly be guided by what other sports do. What the organisation has guaranteed is that it is in a good financial position and there are good economic signs for the future. So what do hockey players on this page think would be the best thing to do for the 2020 season, if there is the possibility of play, and does anyone have any ideas moving forward how the sport may be able to do things bigger and better here on the NW Coast? Leave your comments below. As a final note, if there are any in the sport who are working on the front line _ in the medical profession especially _ we doff our collective hats in gratitude for the remarkable jobs you are doing under the most difficult and unpredictable circumstances. And, if there are any who are struggling in isolation and feeling challenged in their daily lives, reach out to your teammates. We are a big, welcoming family and happy to spread our collective arms. Be good, take care, and be respectful of each other. Cheers one and all. See more
11.01.2022 The weather gods looked down on the complex’s grass grounds today with great consideration ...... which allowed junior soccer’s new home a welcome and successful re-launch for several hundred soccer players and their parents. It was great to see, and the kids’ enthusiasm was infectious. See you all again next Saturday.
11.01.2022 Hard to find the appropriate words to describe the return of hockey at the Park on Friday and Saturday. Though it had been a long time since everyone was together, it seemed that nothing had changed. We thank players and supporters for respecting our protocols in place for the protection of everyone, and just remind you that, at this stage, it will be the norm. Congratulations to South Burnie for winning the Jason Trevarthen match 6-2 against City in a game played in good ...spirits and competition. The support base for both clubs was special and much appreciated. The bar set-up is changed because of COVID restrictions and it was tremendous to see everyone sitting (most of the time) and the younger players and supporters doing the same and interacting so well. Many comments about the changed atmosphere, and positive suggestions for the future which, of course, the committee will discuss. See more
11.01.2022 Many thanks go to the Burnie Baptist and South Burnie senior men for their co-operation and support on Wednesday night. The Park hosted its first GNHL men's night game and, in conjunction with the kiosk, small, tasty meals were pre-ordered, cooked and made available to all players. About 25 meals were sold, including those to some spectators, and it made the night worthwhile for all concerned. The bar patronage was also great. The kiosk is happy to provide this service at any time if given notice.

09.01.2022 Just a reminder to all players that the McKenna Park annual meeting will be held at the complex on Monday, February 17, at 6pm. This is a great opportunity for all clubs and players to hear how the last season played out and what plans are in store for 2020.
09.01.2022 Not only is hockey set to go, but so is the canteen, with a great new coffee machine, a varied cooked-on-site selection of hot food, and the usual staples. Tasty soup, apple and cinnamon and savoury muffins, homemade sausage rolls ..... and on it goes! Mouthwatering, to say the least. There is also new staff, with Karen pictured above showing Chloe the ropes, and they will be joined by Kate. There will be a menu for more substantial meals, so talk to Karen if you’re interested. And, we now have Eftpos facilities available.
09.01.2022 There may have been a delay due to a faulty measuring stick but the new City Marians shed was erected today. It took some additional cutting and shutting to get it to fit and once that was accomplished it was up in a flash. It’s a good size and will facilitate the storing of gear and other club possessions and also allow BDHA to store a range of equipment.
07.01.2022 All McKenna Park hockey users are reminded of their responsibility to report damage to our facility's equipment. Before last weekend's game, these broken wheels were discovered on the southern goals. Fortunately the damage was discovered before the goals were moved, otherwise the mat could have been ripped. We don't think we will find out how they were broken, but do expect this sort of thing to be reported. The fact that part of one of the wheels was found in a bin in a dugout says that someone was aware what had happened.
05.01.2022 At a time when many of us may question the future of the sport and the impact this upside-down year could have on it, last night proved that everything is looking rosy. South Burnie played West Devonport in the under 17s at the Park and it was a great occasion for South's Cairns children Layla, Brady and Chloe who, like so many others, find McKenna their second home during the hockey season. It was the first and only opportunity for the three Cairns siblings to play together... in the same team. The following is a post their mother Jan shared on social media this morning in conveying her thanks to the opposition club. Hello, I just wanted to say a big Thank you to your under 17s team. Last night they played South Burnie, my 9yo daughter was in the team as we wanted all 3 of our kids to be able to play 1 game together. Your team was so good about it, especially the full back who was twice her size, she said he helped and encouraged her. Please tell him that we really appreciate his kindness as Layla was extremely nervous. What a great bunch of kids you have! It is worth finding the post on FB and reading the comments. Our juniors are the future of the sport and, while we may be competitive on the field, it is great to see such camaraderie afterwards. And so good to see that an opposition player from another generation of the long-standing West Devonport Saunders family was so obliging in offering support to the youngest South player. That, we feel, is what our sport should foster and encourage at every turn. Well done to all concerned.
05.01.2022 We have had a couple of requests to post our protocols,so here they are ..... McKenna Park resumption of play We welcome back all hockey players and supporters to McKenna Park and wish you all the best in the resumption of our great game....Continue reading
04.01.2022 Confirmation of some exciting news for McKenna Park ..... New facilities on the way for McKenna Park Published on 03 March 2020... Soccer Plans Burnie City Council has welcomed the announcement of $64,320 from the State Government towards a new Junior Soccer facility at McKenna Park. Burnie City Council Mayor Steve Kons said this project would enable the development of change facilities for the 150 registered children involved in the Western Schools Soccer Association junior soccer program every Saturday morning. The Western Schools Soccer Association provides Junior Football for the greater Burnie, Somerset and Wynyard regions, for players between 6 and 12yrs old. Junior soccer is a very popular program, but until now there have been no dedicated facilities at McKenna Park. Member for Montgomery Leonie Hiscutt MLC said "children being involved in sport establishes lifelong healthy habits; improves physical and mental health; and fosters teamwork and social skills. The Tasmanian Government is committed to making sure more Tasmanians can participate in sport and I’m pleased we are able to work with the Burnie City Council in building these facilities to support our children to be active and have fun. This Project will include change areas, toilet facilities and an undercover area for spectators. The total project is expected to cost $350,000. Council will be providing funding of $285,680 towards the project. Work is expected to commence around October this year with the new facility ready for the start of the 2021 junior soccer season.
04.01.2022 A reminder to all clubs and delegates that with a date put forward for the resumption of hockey, July 18, there’s a crucial meeting of the committee this Monday night at 6pm.
03.01.2022 There is nothing better than seeing a community come together to aid a cause such as cancer, a disease which affects so many close to us. South Burnie Hockey Club has had a number of members and supporters who, in the last any number of years, have been impacted by the disease that has had a long-lasting effect on not just the club, but the wider hockey community. It is a cause the club has adopted as its annual fundraiser and many thousands of dollars have been raised and do...nated. On Saturday at McKenna Park five club members shaved off their precious locks, raffles were sold and the hockey fraternity socialised and raised a phenomenal amount of money. McKenna Park would like to sincerely thank and offer their appreciation to the following businesses and people who supported the fundraising. Fish on the Edge Delish Fine Foods Mick’s Fruit and Vegies West Park IGA Burnie Newsagency Top of the Town Hotel Sargent’s Rural Supplies Ikon Hotel Kaylene Jago Kate’s Cuppies Karen and Michael Cherry The generosity of the above businesses and people allowed the club to increase its annual tally considerably. Thanks also to other clubs and supporters for their on-going support. See more
02.01.2022 Welcome to season 2021. After last year we can only hope this one is successful and moves us all forward in a positive vein. Tonight, Burnie Baptist men host Smithton in the GNL Coastal launch, before tomorrow’s blockbuster City Marians v South Burnie day with GNL men and women, Div. 2 men and women’s Div. 2 and 3. Tomorrow morning is junior soccer’s registration/sign-up day from 9am. Reminder to everyone that the kiosk will be open to serve excellent coffee and tasty food, ...as well as the bar from about 1 pm. Snow looks forward to welcoming back his regulars and is keen to continue to use the Shrosbree Room as the main drinking area. The bar will be used for overflow purposes when the lounge is booked for a function. Karen happy to listen to any food suggestions for the kiosk. Here’s hoping for a great weekend of exciting competition. A reminder to use the Q Code when entering the premises, and to continue with hand cleanliness aand hygiene. See more
01.01.2022 With the best part of the year just around the corner, does anyone out there have the desire to run a summer hockey competition? A lot fun and a great way of keeping your fitness in check!
