25.01.2022 Steve Fry, former A Grade player with McMahons Point who had been battling ill-health in recent years, having been diagnosed nine years ago with Motor Neuron Disease, died a little more than two months after Dasher and Theo. Steve was an outstanding player and an outstanding bloke. In recent years he has lived in Bateau Bay on the Central Coast with wife Sharon and son Jayden. Steve is best remembered at McMahons Point for the roles he played in a number of A Grade seasons ...in the 1980s and 90s. His nickname as a player for reasons that anyone who saw him play would be apparent was ‘Fearless.’ He was a member of the last McMahons Point A Grade side to win the A Grade premiership, playing a starring role in the 1988 A Grade Grand Final to win the pennant in the side captain-coached by Rod Sironen. His teammates that year, aside from Sirro, included Allan Burns, Steve Modric, Grant ‘Speedie’ Ragen, Scott Anderson, Peter Brazel, Connor Kersh, Sam Hill, Mickey Rowan, Wayne ‘Addo’ Adamson, Shane ‘Milby’ Miller, Mal Tinnock, John’Bear’ O’Hara, Barry Mulquinn, Robert ‘Huck’ Turner, Craig Ragen, Greg Dawes, David Coster, Gil Hona, Craig Doherty, and Gavin Armour. (Scroll down below to see the 1988 A Grade Premiers team photo). Steve later in the 1990s played with the Willougby Roos, coached junior sides and was on the committee. As the Roos said in a statement, and heartily endorsed by all at The Point: Steve was an all-round great bloke and a tragic North Sydney Bears supporter who will be dearly missed by all that knew him.

13.01.2022 Here's a photo of one of the great junior sides of the 1980s. Coached by Paul Ragen and managed by Len Holbrook the side were E Grade Premiers in 1985.

12.01.2022 Vale Johnny Miller. Tragically John passed away last weekend after a long battle with cancer. At last year's reunion the Club was to present John with a Lifetime Achievement Award however he was in hospital and was unable to make the reunion. The award was for John's extensive contribution to district football. As a McMahons Point junior he represented the club in North Sydney representative teams culminating in the Jersey Flegg in 1968. From there he was graded and worked hi...s way into first grade in his first year at the age of 17. He scored two tries in first grade that year. He went on to play nine seasons with North Sydney, and was their longest serving player when he stepped down after the 1976 season to relocate to the Central Coast. He played ten seasons in Wyong before finally hanging up the boots and taking to golf. On Thursday in a huge tribute to John, several hundred people attended his funeral at Hillsdale Chapel in Palmdale. His three sons Neil, Glen and Billy, together with his grandson were the pallbearers. Neil and long time friend John Martin delivered the eulogies. John never missed a reunion at McMahons Point, other than for last year. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Our thoughts are with his wife Wendy (pictured with John), sons Neil, Glen and Billy, grandchildren, and extended family. See more

09.01.2022 A great night Saturday August 31 2013 at the McMahons Point Reunion at the Mosman RSL. Players, coaches, officials, supporters, friends and families of Pointers down through the ages were there. From the 1940s through until the club ended its history in 1995, people turned out. Master of Ceremonies Graham Brown welcomed everyone and paid tribute to all who have played and been a part of McMahons Point Rugby League Club, particularly those from the late 1940s and early 1950s including Donny Lees wo played 5/8 in the 1950s and coached the Point in 1958 or 59, and Les and Snow Richards among others.

08.01.2022 McMahons Point junior Don McKinnon knocked up 183 games for the Bears and became the first McMahons Point junior to play for Australia. He was a member of The Invincibles, who toured Great Britain and France in 1982. Donny will be at the reunion on Saturday 31st August at the Mosman RSL.

07.01.2022 The baton has been passed at McMahons Point with the next generation coming to the crease. Just before Steve Fry died, and after we lost Dasher Howarth and Theo Burgess, Kevin Marron, a former B Grade Captain and A Grade premiership winning player of the early 1980s died. Coincidently, another stalwart, Jan Bran, died in the same month. Ironically Kevin was the Captain of the McMahons Point B Grade side in 1982, and Jan was the Manager. Kevin played a major part at the Point... not only on the field, but off it. He became Secretary of the Club in 1981 and maintained a senior role in the running of the club for a good part of the 1980s as president. Jan was instrumental in the club’s running in the 1970s. He formed a strong partnership with Peter Brennan Snr. and Bobby Evans. Kevin and Jan were instrumental in the formation of the B Grade in 1981 and 1982, which Kevin captained and Jan managed. The B Grade in 1982 and 1983 contributed players including Kevin to the A Grade which won premierships in 1982 and 1983. Kevin’s younger brother Greg played at similar times to Kevin, and both played in the 1982 A Grade premiership-winning side - alongside Geoff Marr, Bob Morgan, Bernie Hardaker, Barrie Kennedy, Rodger Fogarty, Steve Holland, Kenny Zeigler, Reg Fearnley, John 'Darkie' Aloe, Gerald Marr, Craig Carragher, Greg Stenning, Mick Moore, Phil Heeb, Chris Parslow, Tim Turner, John Munsie, Gary 'Yak' Hulbert (Vice Captain), Ray O'Brien (Captain), Ron Harre, David Hill and Joe David. Coach was Alan Gill, Manager was Russell Borton, Ian Ashby was Conditioner, Doug Howarth Trainer, and Keith 'Nugget' Ground was Assistant Secretary. Kevin was a really good, incredibly consistent player, a strong administrator and outstanding clubman, winning that award more than once, and at a young age being inducted as a Life Member. Jan Bran was also a very capable administrator and too was among the club’s best clubmen, and too was inducted as a life member. Kevin, who was also an accomplished cricketer was the father of two, a boy and a girl, both still going through school and college. He died on 31 March 2020. Jan also died in March, aged 90. Both will be sorely missed. Kevin and Jan are seen in the photo below. Kevin is in the centre of the front row, and Jan at the end of the front row on the right, the team being the 1982 McMahons Point B Grade side which Kevin captained and Jan managed. Also pictured in the back row from the left are Simon Ippolito, Mark Buckland, Mark Rodgers, John Webb, James Pilditch, Marc Hewitt, and John ‘Blue’ Welch. In the front row from the left is John McEvoy (Coach), Rod Brady, Dave McCarthy, Kevin Marron (Captain), Reg Fearnley (Vice Captain), Len Holbrook and Jan Bran (Manager). Absent: Greg Marron, Mark Burgess.

06.01.2022 These are old club letterheads from 1947 (the year the club started) and 1950. Phil Heeb (mum) managed to obtain them yesterday from the North Sydney library.

05.01.2022 2020 has been a sad year for the McMahons Point Rugby League Club. Legendary A Grade Coach Theo Burgess died 5th March, just two days after Dasher Howarth. Theo was extremely upset over Dasher’s death and had visited him at Royal North Shore in Dasher’s final days. Theo played at the Point and coached A Grade first in 1975 when the side made it to the finals. He played an instrumental part in the club as it grew through the 1970s under some great coaches Dennis Gilmour, Joh...n Kilduff and John Aloe, before he took the reins again in 1979. Theo coached the A Grade in 1979, 1980 and 1983, all three sides taking out the A Grade premiership. He took two years off in 1981 and 1982, coaching Asquith in 1982, when the Point again won the A Grade premiership under Coach Alan Gill assisted by Bernie Hardaker. Theo continued to support the Point through to the club’s end after which he intensified a recruitment role he had unofficially engaged in, in assisting country clubs over many years, moving first to the Super League and then to the NRL. As is well known he played a major part as the inaugural recruitment officer for the Melbourne Storm in their first ever premiership win in 1999 under Coach Chris Anderson. Theo remained in recruiting, looking out for the Warrington Wolves, until the day of his death on 5th March. Theo has attended all reunions, social events and has organised a number of events for players in the years since those 1980s premiership wins, and has been an integral part of McMahons Point for the best part of his life. Like others that have gone before him, and since, he will be sadly missed.

05.01.2022 The 1963 A Grade Premiership side was brought to the podium at the recent reunion to commemorate the 50th anniversary of their big win. Players were presented with 50th Anniversary medalians. Five-eighth Ricky Brunell looked as though he could make today’s side (if we had one). Ray Delaney, who played First Grade with North Sydney was there. Bobby Bust who is no longer with us was represented on stage by his wife Maureen. Ken Maloney, the Vice Captain of the side has also pa...ssed on, but his wife Sandra was presented with his medalian. Ken Millar was also welcomed to the front of the room, as was Dennis Gilmour, who played First Grade for Penrith in its earliest years, and was described as a Club stalwart having served as Club President and A Grade Coach in 1976. After a photo-shoot the side was presented to the whole congregation and congratulated in style on their 50th anniversary. We’ve since heard from the 1963 premiership winning captain-coach Ted Kembrey’s sons Mark and Shane, whose other brother was ballboy for the side. See more

01.01.2022 Earlier this year, just a little over two months ago the Point lost another stalwart. Doug Howarth, better known as Dasher, played with McMahons Point through until the 1970s, graduating through the junior ranks to A Grade, and to Grade for the North Sydney Bears where he played Reserve Grade. Dasher played lock, was a fierce tackler and strong in attack, as tough as they come. Beyond his playing years Dasher stuck with the Point as a supporter, selector and A Grade sponsor, ...attending all the reunions, annual Anzac Day gatherings, and social events. Dasher died on 3rd., March. In his last couple of weeks at Royal North Shore Hospital where he was being treated for a melanoma, he was visited by family, former coaches including Theo Burgess, John Kilduff (Dasher's brother-in-law) and John Aloe, teammates and mates and friends from around Sydney, the Central Coast and North Coast. Dasher is seen in the photo below with his son Robbie, wife Judy and daughter Tammy. Vale ~ Dasher, a champion player and a champion bloke.
