03.01.2022 Did you know that this month is Plastic Free July, and that this movement with over 250k participants and a vision of a plastic free world started in Western Australia? Were taking the challenge, and in an effort to share the knowledge here are 9 surprising everyday items containing hidden plastics to avoid: 1. Sheet masks: these individually-wrapped face-shaped sheet fabrics are usually made of nylon/polyester, with packaging containing aluminium/plastic you can swi...tch to masks made from biodegradable materials, such as bamboo sheets. 2. Wet wipes: often made from polyester either switch to biodegradable wipes, or use flannels/reusable cotton pads as face wipes instead. 3. Sequins: while they used to be made out of metal, they are mostly made out of non-biodegradable PVC. 4. Sanitary pads: these are made from up to 90% plastic, but there are many eco-friendly alternatives available. 5. Teabags: a single teabag made out of plastic mesh can release 11.6 billion microplastics and 3.1 billion nanoplastics - ditch drinking microplastics and opt for plastic-free teabags, or buy loose tea instead. 6. Chewing gum: this can contain forms of plastic called polyethylene and polyvinyl acetate which are non-bio-degradable and can end up in the stomachs of animals. Pick a plant-based gum instead. 7. Crisp packets: these arent recyclable as theyre made of layers of metallised film in order to preserve the contents. There arent alternatives available yet, but Terracycle have created a dedicated recycling scheme. 8. Drinks cartons: even if theyre made from cardboard, drinks cartons are coated with up to 20% plastic to reduce leakage opt for glass bottles instead. 9. Disposable face masks: while face masks have become an essential item for many during the pandemic, the disposable ones usually contain a plastic called polypropylene. If youre not in a medical setting, you can use a reusable cloth mask rather than a surgical mask. You can also sign up for daily emails and tips via the official Plastic Free July website!: https://www.plasticfreejuly.org/take-the-challenge/ #mcnaughtmedia #plasticfreejuly See more
