24.01.2022 The National Museum of Australia will soon be showcasing their Life in Australia exhibition and we have loaned George our giant preserved #Murray cod to be displayed. In preparation for the display George underwent a spruce up and was cleaned and vacuumed. He looks pretty good doesn’t he? The exhibition charts Australia’s environmental history and focusses on the landscape and inland environment.

23.01.2022 Introducing some of the members of the MDBA Mildura team! This year we have been establishing new offices in Mildura, Murray Bridge and Griffith (we have existing offices in Albury-Wodonga, Toowoomba, Goondiwindi, Adelaide and Canberra). Growing our regional presence is really important to us. These connections and new relationships are making a difference in building a shared understanding of local water management issues and solutions. Many of our new Mildura employees are ...locals (some returned locals) with generations of knowledge on how the health of the rivers impacts farming, the environment and tourism. We have also employed skilled professionals keen to relocate to the region and even in lockdown they agree it’s a great place to live and work. They have shared some of their own photos of their favourite places in the area. #localperspective #MDBasin #Mildura #Sunraysia #iheartrivers

22.01.2022 A fantastic restoration story, great to see river history alive. Congratulations to all involved and this milestone achievement. #Echuca #MurrayRiver #PSHero

20.01.2022 Hotter and drier conditions in #Murray catchments this week have slowed down inflows, resulting in Hume Dam dropping back slightly to 77% as releases continue to meet rising demand for water downstream. Don't forget to keep up to date with blue-green algae alerts for your local area. Our weekly report is your summary of water in the Murray: https://www.mdba.gov.au//regular-reports-mu/weekly-reports

18.01.2022 Have you seen that Larry Lamprey and Shorty (short-headed lamprey) movements are still being tracked up the #Murray River. Shorty has been busy passing through both Lock 3 and Lock 4 since the last update from River Murray SA To see more details of this initiative visit: http://ow.ly/3vPb50CrGcK

17.01.2022 Lake Victoria is nearly full sitting at 99% capacity. Measures have been put in place to support sensitive foreshore vegetation and precious cultural heritage while levels are high. Find out more in this week’s River Murray report ow.ly/LvGy50BudYP

17.01.2022 Recently members of our team were lucky enough to be invited onto Country with the Barkandji Traditional Custodians as part of the Menindee Lakes SDLAM project. Along with archaeologists, the traditional owners examined and documented the rich and diverse values of this significant place including ring trees and exposed mounds. Together, we discussed water management issues in the region. All artefact discoveries will be left at the site and recorded on the Aboriginal heritage information management system. http://ow.ly/tqya50Ct0uc

17.01.2022 More rain is forecast for Vic and NSW #Murray for the coming week, adding to healthy falls over the past few days. Dams are steadily filling! Details on how we’re running the system here: http://ow.ly/2xo150BAQOO

16.01.2022 Calling all citizen scientists and frog lovers This video by Mallee Catchment Management Authority shows how you can record frog sounds using the app Frog ID and discover what frog species live in your local area. With the school holidays not far away this looks like a perfect activity for young citizen scientists plus you’ll be contributing to scientific research.

16.01.2022 Travelling to Broken Hill one of our Regional Engagement Officers was met with a mighty downpour when half of last year’s rain fell within 20 minutes. Good rains also recorded in Bourke and Tibooburra (with 43mm). The widespread rainfall is expected to increase flows into Menindee Lakes. #darlingriver #menindee #springrain

16.01.2022 View our latest monthly Basin in Brief to read about the current likelihood of flooding downstream of Hume Dam and what communities below the dam can do now to prepare. Also in this month’s edition we provide the October rainfall wrap, where southern Basin storages are sitting and current water quality threats. You’ll also hear about the climate outlook between now and January (spoiler alert: it’s forecast to be wet!). https://www.mdba.gov.au/basin-brief Photo: Tony Crawford, 2010

15.01.2022 Our new chair Sir Angus Houston kicked off his visit to the Riverina today. It's his first of many trips out into the Basin and he's keen to listen and learn. Today he talked water reform with the Rice Growers Association and SunRice. With Leeton Shire the conversation was about planning for the future and the importance of a diverse and sustainable ag sector. Trip was broken up by a visit to the Fivebough Ramsar Wetlands, an iconic site for locals and visitors. This picture is taken walking alongside Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder Jody Swiripek this afternoon. Next stop. Griffith. #VisitingTheBasin #Listening #Hearing

15.01.2022 Today is #InternationalPodcastDay and so to get in the spirit we’re sharing this podcast where adventurer Sarah Davies talks about her experience paddling the length of The Murray River. Hear how she encountered brown snakes, dust storms and all sorts of challenges along the way, but would recommend it as an accessible adventure we could all tackle. http://ow.ly/GEpr50BEWtm

15.01.2022 Great to see environmental flows heading down the Baaka after long dry spells in recent years! A big boost to community wellbeing. We support better flows for... the length of the Baaka. When our Baaka is healthy, we are healthy. Flows don’t only help fish - they help people too. Our communities need positivity, especially with corona virus impacting. A boost to the river will boost our well-being, Barkindji elder Badger Bates said. https://www.environment.gov.au//lower-darling-baaka-flows-

14.01.2022 More stunning images here from MurrayDarling Journeys, this time from a 290km stretch of the Darling River, capturing wildlife, Indigenous culture and tourism. What a magnificent window into life along this part of the river.

13.01.2022 A fun fact for you on #WorldRiversDay... The Murray River Flag is the only flag in the world to be named in honour of a river. There are three variations of the flag: Upper, Lower and Combined.

11.01.2022 Hume Dam dropped to 78% this week as inflows eased with warmer and drier conditions throughout the southern Basin. Check out the #River #Murray report for more, including blue green algae updates ow.ly/6Lnw50CpHcQ

09.01.2022 If you thought canola looked amazing from the ground, take a look at how spectacular it appears from the air! No wonder they’re called fields of gold! These photos were taken late last week by a local Canberra helicopter company en route to Young in New South Wales. The fields could be seen for many kilometres towards the horizon and were said to be ‘glowing’ on this clear sunny day.

09.01.2022 Our new(ish) chair Sir Angus Houston is back out visiting the people and places of the #MDBasin and today he’s been at Waikerie and Renmark, in SA. At Banrock Wine and Wetland Centre he saw the wine business’ dedication to restoring and protecting their wetlands (pictured here Owen Williams). It is the first internationally important wetland site to be designated in SA that is entirely located on private land. He also met with the Renmark Irrigation Trust who shared how they... work with landholders, irrigators, the CEWH and local Landscape Board to deliver water for the environment. They’ve achieved Platinum Certification for Water Stewardship the first irrigation trust in the world to achieve this! Angus saw this collaboration in action at Johnston’s waterhole where the RIT’s infrastructure is used to deliver water for this stunning wetland (pictured). #visitingthebasin #localperspective #MDBasin

03.01.2022 Yesterday started with a beautiful sunrise on the Murray River in Renmark, but due to recent COVID-19 developments, we made the decision to cut this trip short. We apologise to everyone we had planned to meet in the coming days, we appreciate your patience and plan to visit again when it is safe to do so.
