24.01.2022 Our visiting school today helped to remove approximately 3kg of marine debris or litter from Henley Beach on our marine trail. On a stretch of beach only about 600 metres long before reaching the jetty, we picked up around 170 pieces of marine litter, including many plastic lids, straws, foam pieces and rope scraps. These items can have negative impacts for marine wildlife through ingestion or entanglement, so the students today not only helped to clean the beach, but also save the lives of some marine creatures. Be sure to safely remove any litter you see either on land or on the beach as we are all connected to the coast through our water catchments and drains. By making more sustainable choices today, we can help make the future brighter for our wonderful marine environment. #marinediscoverycentre #henleybeach #oceanwarrior
24.01.2022 We had to share this one. #pickupyourtrash Did you know it takes 450 years for a plastic bottle to decompose?

23.01.2022 We always make sure to pick up any litter we find on Henley Beach on our marine trails, and one way to give this rubbish new life is to use it for art. Year 4 students from Star of the Sea School created some upcycled artworks using litter from Henley Beach otherwise destined for recycling or landfill. We are not only reusing resources and not buying new art supplies; we are also creating awareness for the problems surrounding plastic pollution in our oceans. Creations include turtles, fish, jellyfish and even a sushi platter! You can try to create your own piece of recycled art on the Deep Blue Treasure Hunt, along with many other activities www.deepbluetreasurehunt.com

19.01.2022 Blue-Ringed Octopus on Henley Beach today! We haven't spotted one of these on Henley Beach before. Today a member of the community found and caught this blue-ringed octopus next to the Henley Beach jetty and called us to safely relocate it. This little guy is now back in his home in the ocean. The blue-ringed octopus is one of the deadliest marine life in the ocean, they have enough venom to kill 26 humans although they very rarely sting humans. They'll only strike if they fe...el threatened. They inhabit depths from intertidal flats down to 50 metres and tend to hide in crevices or under rocks during the day so we recommend beachgoers to keep an eye out.

18.01.2022 Today we are visiting a school with the @heapsgood show Down the Drain. A musical and educational performance teaching students that only rain should go down the drain. Everything we do on land, impacts our marine environment and its up to us all to protect it. Up to 8 million tonnes of plastic waste enters our oceans every year. It can float or sink and travel in ocean currents. It can collect in huge garbage patches covering areas up to three times the size of France. ... Plastic makes up 80% of all marine debris around 80% of this coming from land-based sources, and the remaining 20% from fishing and aquaculture.
18.01.2022 Join us this school holidays! We are back open for a public event with limited tickets available. We look forward to welcoming aspiring marine scientists to the Marine Discovery Centre.
18.01.2022 Head over to our news page and read a wonderful article written by one of our wonderful volunteers, Donna Lehmann. "To be clear, I use green bags, reusable metal straws, and buy less packaged options. I spend my free time at the Marine Discovery Centre challenging kids to connect the dots between our day to day activities and the impact it has on the environment. What better time to reflect on how I can reduce plastics in our household than Plastic Free July."

16.01.2022 2021 CuttleFest snorkels to be cancelled due to fishing pressure at Point Lowly. Two weeks ago, CuttleFest 2020 was in full swing. Experiencing Marine Sanctuari...es (EMS) was leading hundreds of adults and children in snorkel tours at Stony Point, Point Lowly to see the aggregation of the Giant cuttlefish, many for the first time. All were looking forward to seeing the amazing displays of colour, competition and success as the cuttlefish sought out mates and laid hundreds of thousands of eggs. On the 12th July, Experiencing Marine Sanctuaries volunteers and 80 participants were devastated when the last of the tours had to be cancelled due to fishing pressure on these unique creatures. That morning, the sea conditions were unsafe at the usual entry at Stony Point due to a strong southerly wind causing large swell and low visibility. The event was moved to a second location on the other side of the Point Lowly Peninsula the Point Lowly Marina -- where conditions were protected from wind, calm and clear. This location has been used for many years by divers and snorkelers as a safe and convenient entry point with plenty of aggregating cuttlefish to view. But on arrival that Sunday, a reconnaissance snorkel found that all cuttlefish from this area had been fished out and there were simply no cuttlefish left to be viewed. There were fisherman lining the marina break wall and along the coast fishing for cuttlefish and squid making it unsafe to snorkel. This years aggregation had been estimated at one and a half to two hundred thousand cuttlefish returning to the Upper Spencer Gulf. And yet none were left to be seen at one of the prime viewing locations mid-way through the June-August mating season. A large event like the CuttleFest snorkel tours costs tens of thousands of dollars to run and relies on volunteer guides and paying participants. In having to cancel the last day of snorkelling for 100 participants, EMS alone, a not-for-profit organisation, lost over $5000 as all tickets for that day were refunded in full to participants. Volunteers were also out of pocket for travel costs. The participants who purchased tickets and travelled from Adelaide for the event spent money on travel, accommodation and meals without in the end experiencing what they had come to see. Businesses relying on those tourists to remain and enjoy Whyalla also lost out. The Marshall government lifted the fishing restrictions on cephalopods (cuttlefish, squid and octopus) in the Upper Spencer Gulf earlier this year. This has led to recreational and commercial fishers taking cephalopods by the boat load and shore and jetty fishers by the esky full. Some are fishing only metres from where marine eco-tourism operators including dive shops, clubs and not-for-profit groups such as EMS run tours for hundreds of participants each day. There is little evidence at this point that there is robust monitoring of the amount of cuttlefish being taken during the aggregation. All 500 EMS participants over the week-long event signed a paper petition to put the Spencer Gulf Cephalopod fishing ban back in place. Several participants voiced their concern with event organisers and volunteers saying, this ban needs to be put back in place at least during the cuttlefish breeding season to ensure this genetically unique species survives. If you would like to see the cuttlefish left to aggregate, breed and lay their eggs then please sign the petition at your local dive shop, download paper petition here and sign (get your friends to sign) and email to Minister David Basham (Primary Industries) at [email protected] & [email protected] telling him you oppose lifting of the commercial fishing ban.

05.01.2022 This fabulous photo was captured by one of our volunteers, Janice, under the Rapid Bay jetty a few weeks ago. These fish are called Old Wives, scientific name = Enoplosus armatus. The derogatory name "Old Wife" reportedly refers to sound made by this species grinding its teeth when caught on hook and line. The Old Wife is easily recognised by its deep compressed body, very tall "spikey" dorsal and anal fins and prominent dark brown to black and white bands. They are endemic to the temperate coastal waters of Australia and is the only modern species in the family Enoplosidae.

26.11.2021 Beautiful summer weather is finally here As we spend more time on the beach, it gives us the chance to slow down and take a closer look at the creatures living here. Last week we found a huge group of moon snails making trails through the wet sand at low tide. We had a look at the little sea snails making their way, before covering them back up with wet sand to keep them safe. Don’t forget to look down next time you’re on the beach
