02.01.2022 NGVTRIENNIAL Until April 18 2021 https://www.ngv.vic.gov.au/exhibition/triennial-2020/... Combining her skills as a designer, researcher and SCUBA diving instructor, Dr Pirjo Haikola has focused her practice on developing a commercial use for sea urchins to reduce the threat to marine life. In Urchin Corals 2020, she has developed a landscape of 3D-printed corals from a new material manufactured from the shells and spikes of the Purple sea urchin (Heliocidaris erythrogramma) and the Black sea urchin (Centrostephanus rodgersii) blend with biopolymers. The sea urchin material presented in the Triennial installation is part of ongoing investigation into the beneficial properties of sea urchin shells and has led to a collaboration on material development and testing for coral reef restoration purposes. Pirjo is an Industry Fellow within MDIT. Her work investigates how design can contribute to regenerating marine ecosystems and creating awareness of marine problems.

01.01.2022 SITE + SOUND MDIT SUMMER PROTOTYPING AND FABRICATION WORKSHOP The exhibition explores sound as a spatial medium. It is designed as an 'audio grove' in which recorded landscapes are recreated within the gallery environment. ... The complex speaker system is housed in a 'forest' of three-dimensional structures that employ the archetypal geometries found in the nature and echoes them with the geometries of sound based cymatic patterns. The project continues research undertaken by the Spatial Sound and Digital Fabrication research streams within MDIT and employs the use of Parametric Design software and CNC machinery to produce complex forms that respond to both functional and aesthetic needs. The exhibition begins at McClelland Gallery on January 27.
