11.01.2022 Last week I posted about the trip over the Foster Hills to Woodside. Once you passed Yarram it seemed to take an eternity to reach the Woodside ground and the m...ajor concerns you would have would be the condition of the ground if there was hot water in the showers and if the pies were any good. Tick one off first as the pies were from the Yarram bakery and rated highly on the pie chart. The ground was quite short probably a kick and a half from the centre and if it had been raining you could guarantee it would be a hard slog through the mud and sheep shit left by their natural mowing system. Then came the showers and if I remember correctly you originally had to step down into a concrete pit water up to your ankles full of bandages tape etc (never look at the soap). The drainage system usually was a hole in the wall with the water running out the back of the changerooms. No thermostats back then and you quickly learned to turn the cold tap on first before the hot or risk steaming your dim sims that is if the juniors hadn't wasted all the hot water. When you would load up your bag to take home it was usually quite a lot heavier with all the extra mud and I believe sheep shit took a while to remove from white shorts. See more
08.01.2022 On Saturday, we will be playing MDU for the first time since the six Alberton Clubs have joined the Mid Gippsland Football Netball League (MGFNL). In honour o...f Owen ‘Spud’ Harris, we will be competing for the Owen ‘Spud’ Harris Memorial Cup. Owen, or Spud, as he was fondly known, played and coached for both Mirboo North and MDU in the 80’s and 90’s, winning an MGFL Reserves Best & Fairest, winning multiple Best & Fairest awards for the Mirboo North Reserves and Premierships in both MDU Reserves and Seniors in 1987 and 88 respectively. Spud finished his career at MDU where he was awarded his Life Membership. We are all very much looking forward to starting a new rivalry in Spud’s name with our close neighbours. We also look forward to paying our respects to Spuds family members in both of our clubs - Marg and the Harris family (which includes current MDU Senior Football Coach Pete, players Matt and Katie) alongside Mirboo North’s 15 & Under netball Coach Robyn and daughter Meg. Good luck to all football and netball teams in a competitive day of sport!
03.01.2022 Watching from afar I have noticed that one of the greatest concerns has been over the extra travel the new league has created. I can remember that before any f...reeways were built in Melbourne it would take over three hours to get home on a Friday after you negotiated the Springvale lights and the Dandenong bottleneck. As a junior I can recall Mum packing up the station wagon for a trip over the Foster hills and leaving early so we could get to Woodside by game time. The Koonwarra S bends followed by the Grassy Spur bends brought you to the base of the climb up the Foster hills and if you were unlucky enough to get caught behind a milk tanker you were screwed. There were only a couple of places going up the hill and down where you could pass and once the truckie gave you the wave around you had to go. Now mum was a bit of a nervous driver and it took her a while to flatten the foot to gain enough speed to get past the truck resulting in quite a few close calls . To say the roads were terrible is a bit of an understatement but it was what you had to negotiate to play the game. I am sure there are many stories out there regarding travelling over the hills.
