22.01.2022 For any academics hurriedly putting together online classes, I have hurriedly put together some tips for teaching online, based on my many years of experience. I hope you find something useful. https://mdwritingediting.com.au/tips-teaching-online/

17.01.2022 Almost every week on social media I see a meme that says something along the lines of ‘a crappy first draft is better than no draft’. Is that true? Of course, it’s better to get started rather than not do any writing at all. But I want to dispel the notion that simply writing thousands of words is always the best thing to aim for.

16.01.2022 Want to become a confident academic writer? I've been helping academics to get their writing done and their papers published for more than 10 years as an editor, mentor and coach. And in that time what I've learned is that giving people a writing process to follow, while helpful, is not enough. What many EMCRs and graduate students need is to find and make time to write regularly, to better use their limited time effectively and to feel more confident in their writing skills.... most importantly, they need to feel supported, but many are struggling to find the support they need. So I'm pleased to announce that today the doors open to my Academic Writing Community, a membership site to support EMCRs, graduate students and healthcare professionals with their writing. I have created this community in a way that I hope will address two of the most common problems I hear about in relation to academic writing. The first is that many people are unable to make time to write. In the Academic Writing Community, we will help you set goals and be accountable in achieving them. It’s not always easy, but it’s possible to change your behaviour, such as learning to say no to extra requests on your time and maintaining your boundaries to protect your writing time each day. I will also host a one-hour writing sprint each week via Zoom, so if nothing else, if you can make it to that then you will make progress on your paper. The other issue is a lack of confidence in writing skills. This can be overcome by doing some writing and doing it often. In addition, being part of a supportive community will help you realise just how many other people are also struggling and will show you that you’re not alone. And we can help you look objectively at any feedback you have received on your writing, so that you don’t feel so disheartened that you stop writing altogether. As a coach, I will also be offering some mini-coaching sessions, and these will be shared in the community so that others can learn. When I’m coaching, I help people see their problems in a different way and also help them find a solution that is achievable. I can guarantee that any problem had by one member will be had by many other members, so just watching the coaching sessions will probably give you some insights into your own struggles. So if you are tired of not making progress with your writing or are fed up with feeling stressed, I encourage you to consider joining us. To lock in the launch price of A$20/month, sign up now: https://mdwritingediting.com.au/academic-writing-community/ The doors to the academy will close on Friday, so don’t delay.

15.01.2022 A lot of my academic writing clients struggle to find time to write. They have this idea that they need to find hours at a time to make it worthwhile, but this is near impossible when they have heavy teaching loads as well as caring duties at home. I encourage my clients to find 30 minutes per day to work on their thesis or paper. One benefit of this approach is that if they miss a day here or there it's no big deal in the scheme of things. If you'd like to know more about ho...w to make the most of limited writing time, come along to my next free training. You can find out more and register at https://mdwritingediting.com.au/august-webinar/ Even if you can't make it live, register to get access to the replay.

02.01.2022 I think I should get some kind of medal for the skills I have in the art of procrastination. Seriously, no matter what I’m avoiding (housework, paid work, life admin) I can put it off for AGES. And then of course, one day it becomes urgent and I have no choice but to do the thing and I discover that it actually didn’t take too long and/or wasn’t too hard. So why did I avoid it for so long? This month’s article is all about procrastination and some tips that might help you if you find yourself putting off your academic writing projects, even though you know you should be working on them. Tired of procrastinating? Read the article here: https://mdwritingediting.com.au/avoiding-your-academic-wri/
