25.01.2022 Simply beautiful

24.01.2022 A 2min lunchtime read by ABC Open writer Ben Muster - More than just a red cape. As an aspiring actor in my high school years, I often find myself considering w...hat first peaked my interest in the performing arts, or what raised the curtain on my creativity, for those who are fond of metaphors. From what I can recall, some have traced it back to my younger attempts at Hollywood stardom through the use of a digital camera and some stuffed toys, while others argue that my (self-proclaimed) Mercury-esque dabbling in karaoke even earlier on is to blame. However, I myself have a different explanation. During the years of Primary School, many have found the unofficially official day of self-expression and general lacking of productivity to be dress-up day. ‘Book Week’, ‘Storybook Day’, call it what you like. No matter the name, there was always fun to be had. Each year, my entire schoolstaff and students bothwould gather in the gymnasium in all their chaotic glory, and host the annual Costume Parade. Whilst restless pre-teens gathered around the border of the building, one class at a time would be instructed to rise from their places and circuit the gymnasium as the makeshift MC provided a running commentary. The cast of characters could include any range of characters like the Mario Bros, Dorothy the Dinosaur, or even such classics as ‘pirate’ or ‘princess’. But unlike the vast majority of other students, I, the famous Ben Musterson of Meagan Blennerhassett: renowned photographer, graphic designer, and costume aficionadosaw a different light. You see, it was common knowledge that gun-wielding soldiers held the upper hand against plastic-plated knights, and that a magic fairy would hands-down destroy a damsel in distress any day of the week. But, it was obvious that none of these could come close to trumping a scary, scaly, and spiky Hungarian Horntail. Each year, my frock would become more and more elaborate, depending on what fantastical obsession my juvenile self possessed at the time. In my final rise to the headlines, I adorned myself in the garb of the great Eddard Stark. And while I had no idea of his character at time, nor the nature of his respective series, my mother took on the task of fashioning an outfit from scratch like a true champion, leaving my classmates to revel in an all-too-familiar feeling of mundanity. It didn’t occur to me just how advanced my costumes were, until I began to progress further and further through my schooling. And even then, I had little idea of the scope that mum’s skillset covered. She would constantly measure and model me with fragments of the costume, only to leave me stunned when the finished product arrived. From then on, and still to this day, she continues to produce high-grade outfits on an industrial scale. Meagan has been lucky enough to spearhead many past and future theatrical productions, most of which have been displayed to the public at the Mildura Arts Centre. And while she insists on approach of blatant modesty, her work is really something that more people should be lucky enough to witness. I am well and truly excited to see where the business leads her. https://open.abc.net.au/explore/205407 See more
